Fundamental Skills
As part of the General Education program, all students are required to be competent in three fundamental skills at entrance: reading, writing, and quantitative analysis. The reading, writing, and quantitative analysis requirements must be met before a student graduates with a bachelor's degree or a first professional degree.
Entrance Requirements
Students may demonstrate competence in these skills in one of three ways:
- Satisfactory performance on examinations given at Pacific during student orientation,
- Completion of approved college-level courses at an accredited college or university; or
- Satisfactory performance on an approved, nationally administered examination.
Any student who does not demonstrate competence in one or more fundamental skills must take course work to remedy the skill deficiency.
| If you score to low... | You must take... |
| Reading examination | READ 31 (Reading for College) |
| Writing examination | WRIT 21 (Writing for College) or an equivalent course from another accredited college or university during the first full year of study. |
| Quantitative analysis (math) examination | MATH 5 (Intermediate Algebra), statistics, or an equivalent course from another accredited college or university during the first full year of study. |
Minimum Grades Required
Successful completion of course work in reading, writing, and quantitative analysis requires a grade of C- or better. Course work taken in writing and quantitative analysis at another college or university must be approved in advance.
Progress Required During the First Year
Failure to make progress toward remediating a basic skill deficiency during the first year of study will be grounds for being placed on academic probation.
Progress Required After Four Semesters
Failure to satisfy the basic skill requirements by the end of four semesters of full-time study at the University will be grounds for academic disqualification.
