July 1

The San Francisco Chronicle had a brief telling readers how to purchase tickets for The 10th Summer Golf Classic, a fund-raiser for the Hutto Patterson Pediatric Clinic at University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.

The Record had a review of the annual Parkstock event in Stockton. Parkstock is an event with art, music and food that's aimed at reaching out to children. The story mentioned that Pacific is a sponsor of the annual event.

Criminology professor John Phillips was quoted in a Record story about the increase in home invasion robberies in Stockton. Phillips said that while he's not surprised that there is no obvious pattern to the recent crime wave, he's baffled as to why there is a home invasion increase since almost all of the recent cases didn't net much loot for the criminals.

The Portland State Vikings put a story on their Web site that said former Pacific basketball coach Sherri Murrell will be their new head women's coach in the coming season.

The Salinas Californian had an obit for Dugoni alumni Dennis Quaglia.

The Newberry Graphic, a weekly paper in Oregon, ran the story on former Pacific coach Sherri Murrell being hired as the new coach of the Portland State University team.

The Modesto Bee had a story about endowed chairs at area universities. It mentioned that Pacific has nine such positions that are funded through $11 million in donations.

July 6

The People's Republic of Seabrook, a popular political blog, ran the Associated Press story about the Federal Department of Justice's recent shift from race-based discrimination cases to religious-based cases. That story quoted McGeorge professor Brian K. Landsberg.

The Merced Sun Star reprinted the Modesto Bee's story about endowed chairs. That story said Pacific has nine endowed chairs funded through $11 million in donations.

The Modesto Bee ran an Associated Press story about what the Supreme Court Justices will do for the summer. The story said that Chief Justice Anthony Kennedy will teach for McGeorge Law School's summer program in Austria. The Sacramento Bee, The Santa Barbara Tribune, The Washington Post, The Charlotte (N.C.)Herald, the Austin American Statesman, the Albany Post-Star, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Baytown (Texas) Sun, The Jersey Journal, The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, The San Francisco Chronicle, the San Jose Mercury News, The Mobile Register, The Lancaster Journal, The Las Vegas Sun, Newsday, The Los Angeles Times, The Baltimore Sun, television stations in Dallas and Washington D.C., and the online news site Townhall.org also ran the same story.

The Website Articlemanual.com had a story about how Global Warming will change the San Joaquin Valley. In it, it urged people to recycle and save fuel and pointed out that University of the Pacific often has recycling programs as well as "Green Awareness Days" to let the public know how they can help save the environment.

The Deseret News (Utah - and yes, it's called Deseret, not Desert) quoted Pacific women's soccer player Audrey Booth on her views on The Spiders, a professional women's soccer team.

The Curry Coastal Pilot (Oregon) had a story that said McGeorge Alumna Cynthia Lynnae Beaman was appointed as a judge to the Curry County Superior Court.

The Auburn Journal had a story that said McGeorge Alumnus Mark S. Curry was appointed as a Placer County Superior Court Judge by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Sacramento Bee, which has a running series looking at historical figures in the area, had a story about McGeorge Alumnus Earl Desmond, former state senator who pushed legislation to created Sacramento State College, now CSU Sacramento.

The Thousand Oaks Acorn had a story that said former McGeorge adjunct professor Steven Hintz has announced his plans to retire from his superior court bench. He was appointed by Gov. Edmund G. Brown 25 years ago.

The Record ran a story about all the people who plan on getting married today because the date reads 7/7/07. Many are betting that by getting married on a "lucky" day, their marriages will last longer. Jan Wammack, manager of Morris Chapel, was quoted about how dates of weddings are often picked because they are significant to either the bride or groom.

The Colorado Star Gazette had a story about Horsehead high school students Christian Li and Chad Lefkowitz-Brown. Both were picked to participate in the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony next month. They were among 17 high school students selected for the prestigious jazz summer camp.

The Eureka Reporter had a story that said McGeorge alumna Amanda Saxton was appointed by The California Fair Political Practices Commission to be the new chief of the commission’s enforcement division.

AsiaWeek.com had an obit for Dugoni Alumnus Antonio Monzon Jimenez. He died of a stroke. According to the article, he was considered to be an expert in the field of endodontics. Jimenez was president of the Jimenez Dental Corporation in San Francisco and owned a thriving dental office and laboratory in the Excelsior District until he retired. He was the first Filipino to be awarded a master’s title by the American Endodontic Society for his exceptional work in root canal therapy.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on Pacific alumnus and well-known Realtor Steve Coldani.

Law.com ran the Associated Press story about what the Supreme Court Justices plan to do for their summer break. That story mentioned that Chief Justice Anthony Kennedy will teach a class for McGeorge this summer.

Sociology Professor Roy Childs was interviewed by phone by Channel 10 in Sacramento on the changing demographics of California. A recent report said that in the next 40 years, California will gain nearly 25 million more people and the state's ethnicity will be predominantly Hispanic. Dr. Childs said that this will have a tremendous impact on both our public education system.

July 10

Calibre Macro World and The Miami Herald both ran the McClatchy news service version of the story about what Supreme Court Justices do during the summer. The story said that Chief Justice Anthony Kennedy teaches a class for McGeorge during the summer.

The Greentree Gazette, a national magazine for teachers, quoted Benerd professor Susan Eskridge about a software called Atomic Learning which organizes videos and makes them easier to use in a classroom. It's used by more than 4,000 school districts in the country. Eskridge praised the software.

July 11

The Centre Daily Times in Pennsylvania ran the McClatchy news service story about what the Supreme Court Justices do during the summer. The story mentioned that Chief Justice Anthony Kennedy teaches a summer course for McGeorge Law School. Yahoo! Canada also ran the same story today.

Michael Fitzgerald's column in today's Record said that this year's fireworks show in Stockton could easily be seen from Pacific's Stockton campus.

The Sacramento Observer had a story about the new NeighborWorks Homeownership Center in Sacramento. That center, which helps low and middle-income people buy homes, had been located on the McGeorge campus for the past seven years, the story says.

July 12

The Record had a section-front story with a large photo of Dr. Gene Bigler today. The story dealt with Pacific's outreach to the Hispanic community and its efforts to recruit more Hispanics to the campus.

The Westport News (Connecticut) had a feature story on local high school swimming champ Danny Platow. He graduated from high school in 2005 and has since been named an "All American." He is transferring to Pacific next year as a junior and plans to swim on the team here, the story says.

Election Updates, a popular blog that deals with election reform and research, had a blurb that mentioned that the upcoming August McGeorge Law Review will feature an articles titled "Facilitating Voting as People Age: Implications of Cognitive Impairment."

July 13

The Record had a photo and caption from the BBC Jazz Awards held yesterday. Dave Brubeck won a lifetime achievement award. The caption mentioned Brubeck's connection to Pacific.

The Record had a brief about a $375,000 grant that Pacific's Global Entrepreneurship Center recently received from the Peery Foundation. The grant will help cover the costs of the center for the next five years.

The Record had a story about six people who will be honored by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at a dinner tonight. One of the honorees is Gillian Murphy, director of the San Joaquin Delta College Small Business Development Center. The story says that she previously worked for Pacific.

The Arizona Business Gazette had a brief that said Pacific alumna Jodi R. Hill was named an associate in the Phoenix-based law firm of Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll.

The Central Valley Business Times had a brief on the Peery Grant the Global Center for Social Entrepreneurship Received.

The Amador Ledger Dispatch had a feature story on the upcoming 34th annual Lions Club International All Star High School Football Game that will be played at Pacific Saturday.

Hispanic Business Magazine ran The Record's article on Pacific's efforts to attract more Hispanics to the University.

The Record and Calibre Macro World had a story about a new program in the Benerd School of Education that will try and get more children of migrant workers to work toward going to college. The program will focus on seventh and eighth grade students.

McGeorge professor John Myers was quoted in a Modesto Bee story about speculation that authorities had found the body of missing Ripon woman Mary Morino-Starkey. A hearing in the murder trial of a man accused of killing Starkey has been called for this week.

Bob Benedetti, the director of the Jacoby Center for Public Service and Civic Leadership, was quoted in a Record story about the problems with alleys. They often are neglected because they are "out of sight, out of mind." The story was about a move in Manteca to pave some of its dirt alleys.

The Oroville Mercury Register and the Chico Enterprise Record both had a story that said all-star basketball player Amber Simmons, who played for Chico last year, will be attending Pacific this coming fall and will play here.

July 15

Both The Record and Calibre Macro World had a story about the attempt by Lodi leaders to offer more higher education courses in their community. The story mentioned that officials in Lodi have been in "talks" with Pacific officials to offer some of its classes in Lodi.

Sociology professor John C. Phillips was quoted in a story in Calibre MacroWorld about how some people in the military target schools with big athletic programs for recruitment because it sees sports and military discipline as being the same. They often run commercials during college sport broadcasts. Phillips, who served in the Army in the '60s, said that he believed that military people are deluding themselves because just because sports and soldiers often use the same language, they are quite different.

The Spectrum, a magazine in Utah, had a story that said Bob Hogue has been named Commissioner of the Pacific West Conference. The story mentioned that Hogue used to be a broadcaster for the former football program at Pacific.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story that said longtime General Mills plant manager Bob Wheeler is retiring. The story mentioned that he served on an advisory committee at Pacific.

The Merced Sun Star had a feature story on new county DA Larry Morse II. It mentioned that he's a McGeorge alumnus.

July 16

Inside Higher Ed had a column about the importance of teaching college students about different cultures and practices instead of just about U.S. customs. The article used Pacific's "International Film Fest" as a shining example of what other universities should do. The International Film Fest is a program run through International Programs and Services. International Students are encouraged to share and explain movies from their home country to students on campus.

The North Bay Business Journal had a brief that said McGeorge alumnus Tom Henry is president of Real Care Insurance Marketing in Sonoma.

July 17

Benerd psychology professor Jon Sandovol was quoted in an ABC News report about a study that said girls who excessively discuss issues to their girlfriends tend to have higher anxiety and depression than girls who don't talk about their problems constantly. Sandoval said previous studies had shown that adolescent girls are more prone to anxiety and depression than adolescent boys. The story was aired on Channel 11 in the Raleigh, North Carolina, area and in New York City.

The Modesto Bee had a brief that said the law firm of Curtis & Arata hired two McGeorge alumni - Jineen T. Espinosa and Lori A. Reihl.

The Record had a story that said Pacific women's volleyball coach Charlie Wade has hinted that five new players could be added to his team by the end of next month. "Help is on the way," he was quoted as saying.

All About Jazz magazine had a story about the upcoming Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony. It focused on the guest artists who will work with the students this year.

July 18

The Newton Tab (MA) had a story about where all the college-bound students from its local high school are going in the fall. University of the Pacific was mentioned in the article as a popular out-of-state school for the graduates this year.

The North County Times in the San Diego Area had a roundup of where all its college-bound high school grads are going. In it, it said local student Alex Grieb, would attend Pacific on an athletic scholarship.

The Monterey County Herald had a story that said Pacific alumnus Andy Bedell was named principal of the local high school.

July 19

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a much longer feature story on General Mills Plant manager Bob Wheeler's announcement that he is retiring. Wheeler has served on an advisory committee at Pacific, the story says. The News-Sentinel had a brief about this announcement last week.

Law.com and Cal Law magazine both had an article today that said CNET's new general counsel in San Francisco is McGeorge alumnus Andy Sherman.

The Record had a story that said the Stockton Opera company is teaming up with Pacific's Opera program to but on Madame Butterfly in January. It's the first time the Stockton Opera company is putting on a production without help from folks in Modesto, the story says. Pacific director of opera Jim Haffner was quoted in the story saying that there's lots of talent to draw from in San Joaquin County.

Greater Milwaukee Today, a weekly paper, had a feature story on "Tax Lady" Roni Lynn Deutch, a tax attorney, and her infomercials. McGeorge professor John Sims was quoted in the story about the professional and ethical responsibilities of attorneys. This story has previously run in other papers.

The Jazz Times, a weekly magazine about jazz, had a story about Marvin Stamm's participation in this summer's Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony. Stamm will teach the students and then perform a concert next month at Pacific.

July 20

Channel 10 was on campus this afternoon and interviewed some of the students participating in the College Summit program. It aired on the 5 p.m. news.

Channel 19 Univision was on campus this afternoon and interviewed some of the students participating in the College Summit program. Their story aired on the 6 p.m. news.

The Record had a brief about a new support group for people with Asperger's Syndrome. The brief mentioned that the group would meet at Pacific once a month.

The Record quoted an Eberhardt Business Forecast study that said California is headed toward a "soft recession" but that there would be no economic crash.

The Record had a feature story on Tracy High School football coach Wayne Schneider and his efforts to get ready for the all-star game. The game was held at Pacific on Saturday.

The Orange County Register had a story that said Chapman University has renamed its School of Music to the "Conservatory of Music." The story mentioned said that there are only three other Conservatories in the state, including one at Pacific.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story on the College Summit program. The story included a photo of Tom Rajala giving a presentation to the students.

The Central Valley Business Times had a story on the Economic Forecast issued by the Eberhardt School of Business.

The San Joaquin Office of Education had a story on its Web site about a new program being offered by the Jacoby Center to help government and non-profit employees move into management positions.

The Fresno Bee ran a story quoting the economic forecast from the Eberhardt School of Business. The Modesto Bee ran the same story.

The Record had a story about the behavior problems that often dominate pre-schoolers. The story focused on a pre-school program operated by Stockton Unified School District and said that many Pacific psychology students work with the school district to address these issues.

The Record had a brief about The second Cathedral Conversations lecture series at the Cathedral of the Annunciation. It said one of the lectures will be presented by Margee Ensign, dean of University of the Pacific's School of International Studies. Ensign will discuss "The Stories You Rarely Hear" from Africa.

July 22

The Record had a feature story on Congressman Jerry McNerney's first six months in office. Among the accomplishments McNerney named were his efforts to work more closely with representatives of Pacific.

The Record had a story that said University of the Pacific cross country head coach Greg Rhines won a local contest for having the "smelliest sneakers."

The Record had a front-section story on the College Summit program held during the week at Pacific.

Robert Benedetti, executive director of the Jacoby Center for Public Service and Civic Leadership, was quoted in a story in The Record about the growing number of constituents who send e-mail to their Congressmen. Benedetti said it's especially important for first term Congressmen to pay attention to the e-mail they receive if they want to get re-elected.

The Website ReedConstructionData.com ran the Fresno Bee story about the Eberhardt School of Business' recent forecast. Dean Chuck Williams was quoted in that story.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story about last weekend's high school all-star football game, which was played at Pacific.

CSTV.com, a sports Web site run by CBS, had a story about the upcoming NCAA field hockey championships. It said that top-rated Boston City College Eagles will play against Pacific's team on Aug. 26.

The Vallejo Times Herald had a story about the Eberhardt School of Business' recent forecast.

July 25

The Daily Barometer, a weekly paper put out by Oregon State University, had an article about the upcoming schedule for their college volleyball team. The story mentioned that the team will play at Pacific against the Tigers on in November.

The Salinas Californian had a brief that said Pacific Education Doctoral Candidate Timothy Swartz was appointed assistant principal of North Salinas High School. He previously served as assistant principal at Hamilton Middle School in Stockton.

KCRA Channel 3 had a story on last night's news about the Master Opera Class being held this week at Pacific. The story lead with "Some kids go to baseball camp, others go to rock and roll camp. But there is a camp in the Valley that you probably didn't even know existed - Opera Camp."

Ron Hoverstad, associate dean at the University of the Pacific's Eberhardt School of Business, was quoted in the Fresno Bee in a story about the last Krispy Kreme store going out of business there. He said the chain was hurt by its rapid expansion which diluted its "mystique" as a food only available in the south.

Renee Nash, an attorney who teaches employment law at University of the Pacific's McGeorge School of Law, was quoted in the Lodi News-Sentinel about a story where a gas station clerk who helped police capture a robber of the station was then fired the next morning. Nash said that, unfortunately, under California law employers really don't need to give a reason for firing an employee.

Jacoby Center director Bob Benedetti was quoted in a story about the death of former Stockton mayor Joan Darrah. He said she brought "decorum" back to the city council and was the first local politician who understood the potential in revitalizing the waterfront.

The Modesto Bee had a story about how Modesto ranked in the top-third of a look at the fastest growing economic areas in the nation. The story quoted Sean Snaith, consultant to the Business Forecasting Center at the Eberhardt School of Business.

The Gillette News Record in Wyoming had a feature story on artist Joan Sowada, an alumna of Pacific's Conservatory of Music.

The Record had a story that lightly suggested one of the reasons the San Francisco 49ers are not doing well as a football team is because they no longer train at Pacific. Assistant athletic director Cindy Spiro was quoted in the story.

July 30

The Record had a story about the Opera that was performed at The Haggin Museum Sunday by students in this summer's Master Opera Class at Pacific. Opera Institute director David Ebbers was quoted in the story.

The Record had a feature story on local cartoonist Joseph Young. The story mentioned that Young studied at Pacific.

July 31

The Record had a story on the start of the Grass Roots Global Symposium that is going on at Pacific all this week. Representatives of Stockton's sister city in Mexico are on campus to get ideas on how to improve relations between to the two communities, the story says. Professor David W. Frederickson was quoted in the story.

The Monterey Californian had a brief that said Eberhardt doctoral candidate Timothy Swartz will serve as assistant principal of North Salinas High School.

Former Pacific professor and golf coach Glen Albaugh and current vice president for university advancement, Ted Leland, were both quoted in a story today in The Record about retired 49ers coach Bill Walsh's death yesterday.
