A sign on my door says, "Those who dare to teach must never cease to learn" (attributed to Socrates).
This encapsulates my feelings about the daring attitude needed for teaching. . . it is not for the faint of heart.
Yet, it shows how humble a teacher must be, forthere is always more to learn. . . more about music, more about students, more about life.
In my classes, I try to help students find their own balance of boldness and subtlety, drawing from their own experience, while whetting their intellectual appetites.
Those of us who get to teach are extremely fortunate.
