Sue Eskridge

Associate Professor of Education

My personal vision of teaching and learning has been a reality for me ever since I taught 6th graders,  because It works.

The vision begins with understanding that innovations in information and communications  technologies, combined with student-centered educational practices, can bring about significant changes  in both learning experiences and learners themselves.

The following four core principles of the "Guiding Partner Approach" are based on my own experiences  implementing educational practices, the experiences of many ThinkQuest students during the past  six years, and what we have learned from research on cognition:

  • Respect for the ideas of learners and for their ability to engage deeply in serious learning creates a circle of respect among peer learners and teachers
  • When students' work is created for peers, the standards for success are high, work is assessed authentically, and students engage in responsible citizenship and professionalism.
  • Proliferation of information technology requires all learners—students, teachers, and teacher educators—to be knowledgeable, ethical, and socially literate citizens.

I strongly believe in constructivist pedagogy in which students and faculty are colleagues in the learning  process.

I envision learning environments in which inquiry and exploration, rather than transmission and  memorization, are the modes of learning.

And I envision schools of education as centers for cutting-edge technology research and new pedagogical  uses of this technology.
