Global Center for Social Entrepreneurship

The Global Center for Social Entrepreneurship was established in the School of International Studies at the University of the Pacific in 2006.

It positions Pacific and SIS at the forefront of the newly emerging field of social entrepreneurship in both the academic and applied learning environments.

Social Entrepreneurship is a hybrid innovation that applies business and management skills to tackle chronic societal problems with sustainable solutions.

It is creating a whole new generation of solution-minded pragmatists that are pioneering practical, inventive, and sustainable approaches to address the world’s most pressing social issues:  poverty, disease, malnutrition, environmental degradation, injustice and illiteracy.

Here are some of our Center’s existing and evolving programs and projects:

  • Certificate and Master's program: We are completing an on-line sequence of three courses that will constitute a certificate in social entrepreneurship and are developing an MA in this area that will be begin in 2008-09.  The purpose of these academic and applied programs and to provide practically-based academic training on-site and online in the field of Social Entrepreneurship
  • Internships: To date eleven international internships for all Pacific students have been developed which afford students direct access to the internal operations of frontline Social Entrepreneurship organizations through domestic and international internships
  • Applied research: The Center will conduct high quality impact analysis, monitoring and evaluation, and documentation of Social Entrepreneurship organizations
  • Community linkage: Through community workshops, public forums, and social enterprise joint venture partnerships the Center is linking the University to the community
