Performance: Jatayu
On May 24 Jaroslaw Kapuscinski, visiting lecturer in the Theory Department had a performance of his piece "Jatayu" for piano and tape at the International Festival "Musica Electronica Nova" in Wroclaw, Poland.
The week long festival presented two daily concerts of electronic music. It involved artists such as Kaija Saariaho, Arditti Quartet, Anssi Kartunnen, Camilla Hoitenga, Garth Knox, Alter Ego, Andrzej Bauer, Aukso Orchestra as well as laptop performers Scanner, Pan Sonic and Kazuhisa Uchihashi and a live video group D-Fuse. There were several events that celebrated the 50th anniversary of Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio in Warsaw. Among them a concert in which the work of Dr. Kapuscinski was performed by Maciej Grzybowski, a renowned Polish pianist.
The celebrated Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio in Warsaw was established in 1957 as one of the first electronic music research institutions in the world (5th in Europe, 7th in the world). For many years it was the only such institution behind the Iron Curtain. Dr. Kapuscinski produced several of his works at the studio: Impromptu for tape (1986), Jatayu for piano and tape (1987), Chagalliana I for violin, synthesizer and tape (1990) and the soundtrack for Mondrian Variations a video (1992).
