M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction
About the Degree
The Master of Arts (M.A.) degree from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction is suited for prospective students who already have a teaching credential or equivalent professional preparation.
The M.A. degree helps students develop expertise in planning, organizing, managing, evaluating, and improving school programs through curriculum development, staff development, and research.

The program helps students develop and extend their knowledge gained from advanced study in curriculum and instruction.
There are three options for the M.A. program in Curriculum & Instruction:
Plan A: Program with a Thesis
- 30 units of graduate work, with16 units in Curriculum and Instruction.4units are required for the thesis (CURR 299)
- 16 units of the thirty units numbered at 201 and above
- Additional courses to complete thirty (30) units may be selected from the School of Education with guidance from an advisor.
- Completion of an oral examination and defense of the thesis
Plan B: Program with Seminars
- 32 units of graduate work
- 18 units in courses numbered 201 or above
- A minimum of eighteen (18)units in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction
- 6 units selected from disciplines outside of the School of Education
- One seminar from the Department
- 12 units of M.A. core courses
- An oral examination
Plan D: Special Program
- 32 units of graduate work
- 18 units in courses numbered 201 and above
- 18 units in the Curriculum and Instruction department
- 12 units in M.A. core courses
- An oral examination
- One seminar in the department
Admission Information
Prospective studentsmust submit application materials to the
Research and Graduate Studies Office at the University of the Pacific.
Admission to this program is a holistic decision, and is based on the following:
- A 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on the last 60 units of undergraduate study (out of a possible 4.0)
- The Graduate School application form
- An essay about your goals and reasons for applying for the program
- Three (3) letters of recommendation
- Official Transcripts
- Scores from the
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Examination
(GRE scores are needed for applications for master’s degree and doctoral degree programs in the School of Education.)
