College of the Pacific

Welcome to the Department of Biological Sciences

Biology building
The new Biology Building completed in 2008 includes state-of-the-art lecture halls and research labs.

Members of the Biology Department share an enthusiasm for discovery, a passion for learning, and a commitment to training and educating students.

Biology is the most popular major at Pacific. Unlike larger institutions that rely on graduate students to gather scientific data, the Biology Department at Pacific offers unparalleled research opportunities for undergraduate students, and close faculty-student interactions.

Programs of study are flexible to prepare students to pursue careers in advanced degrees in the areas of molecular and cellular biology, genetics, biochemistry, botany, microbiology, physiology or zoology.

Our programs also prepare students for health-based professional fields that include dentistry, pharmacy, medicine, biotechnology, nursing or physical therapy. Faculty advisers closely interact with the University of the Pacific Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry admissions committees to facilitate student transition from pre-professional to professional programs.

Biology Department Wins Pacific Fund Grant

Biology Professor and Co-Chair Dr. Craig Vierra was awarded a Pacific Fund grant in fall 2009 to acquire a protein concentrator, which will enable the department to advance its research and development of synthetic spider silk. Learn More
