Welcome to the Department of Sport Sciences

Sport Sciences Student

Sport Sciences is engaged in understanding and promoting physical activity. Our goal is to examine how physical activity and sport contribute to the quality of life. We do this from a wide range of perspectives, including biology, physiology, psychology, sociology and philosophy, so our graduates are able to conceptualize and analyze human movement in a holistic manner.

The Sport Sciences Department offers a progressive, dynamic, cross-disciplinary curriculum in the liberal arts tradition. Our purpose is to educate and prepare students for a wide variety of careers in the field broadly defined as sport.

Two Degrees and Three Concentrations to Choose From

The Department of Sport Sciences offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees. A set of required core courses gives undergraduate majors a common base of knowledge and understanding about the philosophical, sociological, psychological and scientific concepts within the discipline. In addition to the core, undergraduates majoring in Sport Sciences must select one of the following three concentrations: Sport Management, Sports Medicine, or Sport Pedagogy; or choose to fulfill the Athletic Training Major.

Flexible Graduate Program

The graduate program in Sport Sciences provides for scholarly study in the areas of Clinical Exercise Science, Sport Management and Sport Pedagogy. A major strength of the program lies in its flexibility. Academic programs are individually designed to meet the objectives and needs of students within a variety of special emphasis areas. A typical program might include a mix of regular and special topics academic courses, independent study/research, and an internship or practicum experience.
