College of the Pacific

Why choose a Modern Language & Literature degree at Pacific?

“Since Pacific isn't a huge school, I know all of my professors. In my French class this semester, there are only ten of us, so everyone gets a chance to participate and know the professor. My experience at Pacific has been great!”

Andrew Summers

The Modern Languages and Literature Department at Pacific offers majors and minors in Spanish, French, Asian Languages, Russian Area Studies, and language courses in German and Portuguese. About 60 to 70 percent of our students are double majors.

  • Our classes are small and you have the opportunity to get to know your classmates and professor, always using the target language.
  • Many of our students study abroad for a semester or a year.
  • Our professors are highly experienced in their fields and have traveled widely.

The web site of the Ornelas Language Learning Center further provides support and content for learning and teaching, as well as cultural links in target languages.

Students Abroad

Are you thinking of studying abroad? You've come to the right place!

We strongly encourage a semester or summer study abroad. Every year our students go to the major cities of Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. We have our own departmental summer Study Abroad program in Guatemala (Antigua).

The benefits of cultural and linguistic immersion last a lifetime and go far beyond the obvious advantage of rapidly developing second language conversational skills, learning about culture and customs, and exploring history and heritage. This is an investment you make in yourself and your future. Unforgettable adventures and new exciting experiences await you!
