The curriculum in French includes beginning video-based language classes, intermediate courses focusing on culture and language, advanced language and composition courses, surveys of literature and civilization, theme-based advanced courses covering French and Francophone literatures and cinema, and other more specialized courses, such as the French of Business and Economics. All courses in French unless otherwise specified.
The B.A. in French has two tracks, 1) the Language and Literature track which requires completion of six French courses above the intermediate level, providing background in French civilization, French and Francophone literatures and/or film; and 2) the French Studies track which requires five French courses beyond the intermediate level plus three approved related courses in complementary fields.

French Studies Track
Requirements for the French Studies track are five courses in French beyond FREN 25-lntermediate French, fourth semester, plus the two-unit capstone. Students may take French 51 or French 120 in English when offered to count for one of the five. Assignments may be completed in French as an option, or at the discretion of the instructor. Two to three of the advanced courses may be completed in a study abroad program. Three related courses in other departments are an additional requirement. Among the options for related courses are: ARTH 112-19th Century European Art; ARTH 114-20th Century European Art and Film; GEOG 116-Western Europe; GEOG 118 Canada: Land, Resources, and People; HIST 104-Medieval History, HIST IIO-The European Age; HIST 114-Europe in Turmoil; HIST 115-Europe since 1945; HIST 138-French and Russian Revolutions; HIST 178-Historyof Modern Ideas Since 1750; HIST 180-European Socialist Tradition; POLS 141-Comparative Politics of Western Europe; POLS 168-Comparative Foreign Policy; ECON 121-International Trade (prerequisites: ECON 53, 55). Other courses may be negotiable with the French Studies faculty adviser and be pre-approved for credit in the major. At least one semester of study abroad in a French-speaking country and in a program in the target language is strongly urged. A student may not major in both French and French Studies.
French Minor
Five courses (20 units), in French beginning first semester, first-year. At least two of the five required courses must be at the advanced level. A minimum of 12 of the 20 units and at least one advanced course must be completed in the Modern Language and Literature Department.
Spanish Major

The curriculum in Spanish includes beginning and intermediate and advanced level classes for both native and non-native speakers of Spanish. Spanish linguistics, Hispanic literature and civilization courses and complemented by Experiential Learning Opportunities. All courses are given entirely in Spanish.
The B.A. in Spanish has three concentrations: 1) The Hispanic Language and Literature Concentration; 2) The Spanish Pedagogy Concentration. (Students seeking a teaching credential must complete the Spanish Pedagogy Concentration in addition to courses required by the School of Education.); and 3) Cultura y Civilización.

Catalog Description
This major allows students to develop their language skills in Chinese or Japanese while simultaneously gaining significant knowledge about the Asian context. Students share a strong interdisciplinary curriculum and choose to concentrate their language study in Chinese or Japanese. The non-language curriculum will be taught in English and includes film, literature, history, politics, and religion. The major requires one semester of study abroad in China/Taiwan or Japan. The minimum number of units for the major is 34.

Major (self-designed) in Russian Area Studies
The Russian Area Studies major will provide an in-depth understanding of the Russian culture by completion of a number of required courses selected by the major's committee.
The major's curriculum requires a series of language courses to be taken at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as the department capstone course.
In addition to the language courses, a certain number of courses taken outside of the Modern Language Department will be required. These additional courses will complement the intensive language courses and will allow for an extensive understanding of the Russian culture. Each student who pursues this major will be required to complete a minimum of 32 units from the courses in the following areas: language, literature, history, and special topics (the latter can be taken under Independent Studies aegis). The student will also be required to study abroad in Russia for a semester. Pending on which study abroad program is selected, the total number of units will be 44-46.
Self-designed Russian Area Studies major will provide the student with the opportunity of perfecting his/her language skills as well as acquiring background knowledge about Russian history, economics, politics, literature and culture.
Major (self-designed) and minor programs In Russian Area Studies are interdisciplinary, combining courses in the departments of Modern Language, History, Political Science, Economics, and (sometimes) English. Language courses are taught in Russian; other courses are taught in English.
