College of the Pacific

Our Students

Our students are active in a variety of activities that enable them to hone their communication skills, be exposed to various media and gain practical experience.

Independent Study and Independent Research

We believe that independent studies and independent research can be of particular value to advanced students. Requirements for independent study and independent research are as follows:

  1. The student must have a Communication Department G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher and the permission of the instructor.
  2. The student must have completed all emphasis area requirements for the major.

Internships and Practica

Practica and internships are an important adjunct to learning. These experiences are available both on and off campus in the areas of radio, television, public relations, journalism, organizational communication and forensics (speech and debate).

KPAC

KPAC is the student-operated, carrier-current radio station on campus. Supported by the sales of radio advertising, the station offers students experience in managing, programming, announcing, and sales of advertising time in a commercial radio environment.

Pacific Speech and Debate Society

For over seven decades, Pacific has competed with distinction in intercollegiate speech and debate. The Pacific teams are regulars in national championship competition and have compiled enviable records at both the regional and national levels.

The Communication Department offers forensics scholarships to students who have demonstrated a high level of performance proficiency and require financial assistance.

The Pacifican

The Pacifican is a student-managed, independent weekly newspaper. This publication serves as a laboratory for those interested in pursuing careers in journalism.

PRSSA

The University of the Pacific boasts a chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.

Serious public relations students meet monthly to hear professionals invited from San Francisco and other major market areas discuss contemporary public relations topics.

They also form teams to compete in national case-study competition. Pacific PRSSA teams have distinguished themselves over the years by placing in national competition.

Tiger TV

Tiger TV is a closed-circuit television station on campus that allows students to be involved in cable-casting campus news, campus sports and discussion of issues.
