Internships and Cooperative Education
University of the Pacific encourages students to combine academic and career interests with practical work experience through internships and cooperative education opportunities. cooperative education refers to semester-long, full-time positions without any responsibilities outside of work. These programs match students with companies and organizations in Stockton and around the world; participating organizations include DreamWorks Studios, NASA/Goddard Flight Center, the White House, Lawrence Livermore Laboratories, and the Sacramento Kings.
Internships are short-term, local assignments that carry academic duties in addition to the workload. You earn credit for what is learned through performance of duties, usually in a field related to your major or a career interest. An internship integrates a student’s academic and career interests with a work experience, linking theory to practice in a professional work setting.
Cooperative Education is a semester-long, full-time position without any responsibilities outside of work. You learn though paid, productive work experiences related to your academic or career goals. Cooperative Education is offered at the associate, baccalaureate, and graduate levels, and is available in a wide range of fields of study. Both alternating and parallel forms of Cooperative Education have been used successfully.
Field work is an off-campus learning experience. Students are required to attend seminars and classes and/or be under direct faculty supervision at the same time as doing the field work. It is for credit and usually has a course prerequisite.
Supervised teaching is for credential candidates in the School of Education. It is not paid, always required and counts towards a major. It always has many prerequisites.
