General Education

The General Education (G.E.) program at Pacific is perfect for so many reasons. Not only does it work for people who know what they want to major in, it’s also great for people who come in undecided. Basically, there are nine G.E. categories—if you are in College of the Pacific, you have to take one class from each category before you graduate (It’s different for other schools). In some cases, a specific G.E. class will be required for a major, so in that case you’re getting a two-for-one. I’m a communication major so I have to take Introduction to Interpersonal Communication, but it’s also offered as a G.E.—that means I can take another class just for fun.

General Education here is different from a lot of schools because you don’t have to take classes in any particular order, and nothing is off-limits to freshmen. Not having to take classes in any order means you can take classes in your major in your first year. The selection of classes in each category is so big and varied, I know you’re going to find something you like.

The general education program includes coursework outside of your major required for graduation. This includes the signature Pacific Seminar series, the breadth program requirements for the different units and fundamental skill requirements.

For students taking general education courses, Thomas J. Long Foundation Core Scholarship Program can provide an incentive to perform well.  For more information please visit the Pacific's General Education Program website.
