Concept Map for e-Portfolios
In 2006, Pacific launched its new e-Portfolio system as an extension of the Blackboard Learning Management System. In addition to improving student learning, e-Portfolios can be used effectively to document student participation in co-curricular activities, help our institution prepare for accreditation, and allow stakeholders to stay informed of our progress in meeting broader institutional objectives. Contact Blackboard Support for more information on getting started with e-Portfolios for your course or department.
Course Evaluations
Efforts are being made across the institution to develop a core set of university-wide course evaluation questions. The system in place will allow customization of these evaluations at the college, department, and eventually the instructor level. More information on the product, Course Response, can be found at www.digitalmeasures.com.
CV Manager
Pacific has also deployed a new CV Manager tool that helps faculty manage information on teaching, research, and service, to automate business processes for P&T, annual evaluations, and activities reporting. Faculty can access the CV Manager tool from within insidePacific (Academic Tab).
Web Conferencing
In the spring of 2008, Pacific added Web-conferencing capabilities to Blackboard. A group of faculty engaged in an eight-month product selection process. Their choice was Wimba. More information at www.wimba.com
The Center for Digital and Media Arts
The Center for Digital Media and Arts (CDMA) will serve as a focal point for the exploration of the intersection of Computer Science, Visual Arts, Music, Communication and English. This program will allow students and faculty to engage in collaborative projects exploring the potential of new media forms. An associated studio/laboratory will provide a shared workspace where artists, musicians, programmers and writers can collaborate and learn to share ideas across disciplines. For more info, contact Professor Mike Doherty (Computer Science Department).
Second Life
In the fall of 2007, the University of the Pacific, working with the New Media Consortium, purchased and developed space in Second Life (SL), a virtual community owned by Linden Labs, to be used for outreach and educational purposes. The name of the space is “U Pacific." To access U Pacific, you will need to create a free avatar at www.secondlife.com, then simply search "Places" for University of the Pacific.
TEC
The Technology in Education Committee is composed of faculty from all academic units, including the library. This faculty committee has primary responsibility of providing recommendations to the Academic Council, the Information Strategy and Policy Committee (ISPC), the Office of Information Technology (OIT), and to other committees within the participating academic units. These recommendations pertain to the use of instructional technology and central services to support teaching, to promote student learning, and to advance scholarship and support research.
Blogs
In addition to the blogging solution available via Blackboard (internal to Blackboard courses), the university is in the process of implementing an external blogging solution that would allow faculty, students, and administrators the ability to have a blog with the pacific.edu URL. More info at https://blogs.pacific.edu
eBook Readers
Pacific is in the early stages of exploring the Amazon Kindle and other eBook readers. The disintermediation of textbook publishers combined with the increasing cultural preference for micro-transactions possible through eBook devices may result in considerable cost savings for students in the future. Ultimately, the adoption of eBook devices may be driven by the market as student/consumers seek to reduce the cost of education.
