Projection for Two Pianos (2004)

by Joji Yuasa

This piano duo piece was composed for two of the best Japanese pianists who performed during a recital in Tokyo in 2004, all my piano music.

Here I intended to bring out the stereophonic sound movement from the two pianos arranged face to face, rather than simply doubling the number of keys; pitches; or doubling the pianos’ size with closely combining them as the customary arrangement.

Stereophonic music, piano A and B are responding to each other. I planned and imagined such music as representing spatial and kinetic energy and movement.

The piece consists of five characteristic sections. The muted pitch by a fingertip represents not only change of tone but also it does express the distance of sound; far and near presence of sound greatly. The work can be hardly realized without two pianists.
