Brian Chahley
Brian Chahley is a jazz trumpeter from Toronto currently working as the Assistant to the Director of the Brubeck Institute while continuing to perform with the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet.
Influenced by Freddie Hubbard and Clifford Brown, Brian took up the trumpet at age 12, and since then has studied trumpet with veterans such as Freddie Hubbard, Chase Sanborn, Nicholas Payton, Warren Gale, Terell Stafford, and Brian Lynch. He also has studied classical trumpet under Stanley Rosenzweig, Louis Fasman, and Lenny Ott. Brian's father Chris and his mother Lisa were both on the Toronto jazz scene in the 1980's, and got Brian interested in jazz. Brian's accomplishments include being the first Canadian ever selected to play in the Gibson/Baldwin GRAMMY High School Jazz Ensembles in Los Angeles and being the only person in the history of the band to sit in the “jazz chair” twice in a row, playing in various Canadian Jazz Festivals, playing in the North Sea Jazz Festival in Amsterdam, performing at the US Consulate in Barcelona, Spain, playing with Jim Galloway's Wee Big Band, soloing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and attending the Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony in Stockton, California. Most recently, Brian joined the Dave Brubeck Quartet onstage as a special guest in the first ever jazz performance at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, Canada.
Brian has played and worked with such jazz notables as Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, Robert Hurst, Freddie Hubbard, Lewis Nash, Greg Tardy, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Miguel Zenon, Benny Maupin, Vince Herring, Brian Lynch, Donald Brown, Benny Golson, Nicholas Payton, Jerry Bergonzi, Clark Terry, Kurt Elling, Gerald Wilson, and Roy Hargrove. Brian plays a Conn Connstellation 38B trumpet with a Monette B2 mouthpiece, and a Couesnon Star Flugelhorn with a Monette FL2 mouthpiece.
