Powell Scholars Program At-A-Glance
Powell Scholars will explore and discover leadership connections at Pacific and beyond through their studies and experiential learning opportunities. Scholars will participate in unique activities on campus that promote leadership and foster a sense of a community, and each will be assigned a faculty member to serve as their mentor throughout their time at Pacific.
The Powell Scholars program includes:
- A scholarship of $15,000 per year, renewable for undergraduate study
- Reimbursement of up to $5,000 for faculty-supported academic research
- Up to $2,500 for participation in an organized study abroad program
- Participation in the University Honors program
- Leadership coursework with other Powell Scholars and guidance from a faculty mentor
- Opportunities for experiential learning through internships and community service projects
- Special cultural, social, and recreational activities
Qualification of Candidates
University of the Pacific is seeking Powell Scholars candidates who have:
- A cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or higher (on an unweighted 4.00 scale)
- Undertaken a rigorous academic curriculum - Honors, AP, and/or IB courses
- Demonstrated superior leadership skills in two or more areas, including student government, community service or religious and cultural groups
- Been recommended by a high school counselor or principal
- Either an ACT composite score of at least 28 or a combined SAT Critical Reading and Math score of 1250.
Students who meet these minimum criteria are encouraged to apply. A select number of semi-finalists will be invited to campus to interview with the Powell Scholars selection committee.
Checklist for Students
Please complete the following items by the deadline.
- Apply for admission to the university at http://www.pacific.edu/apply.
- Complete the Powell Scholars Application, which includes a 500-word essay about leadership, at http://go.pacific.edu/powell. (You can cut and paste your essay into the online application.)
- Ask your high school counselor or principal to submit the Powell Scholar Recommendation form at http://go.pacific.edu/powell no later than the deadline.

Please allow up to two weeks for processing your Powell Scholars application and recommendation.
There is no need to submit supplemental documents or letters of recommendation because this will delay processing of your application.
