Benerd School of Education

Gladys L. Benerd taught Physical Education for the Stockton Unified School District and San Joaquin Delta College . The school district used the Benerd building as a high school from the 1930s to the 1940s, when the building became part of the Community College (now San Joaquin Delta Community College). Around 1948 or 1950 the University of the Pacific School of Education moved into the building; previously it had been housed in Bannister.

A frequent visitor to campus, and because of her love of education, in 1992 Gladys gave a major gift to Pacific. She gave $5 million to Pacific, which soon grew to $8 million, then $13 million. The School of Education received $5 million, which in gratitude dedecated the building to her and named the school after  Gladys. The gift specified that the school could be called the "Benerd School of Education" instead of using her full name. Another $1 million of went to the library, and other significant gifts were made to scholarships, dependents of Stockton firefighters, sherriffs, highway patrol, and police, and to San Joaquin Delta Community College. All from a P.E. teacher.

Bricks were added to the facade in 1995 to help unify the appearance with the rest of the university campus. An elevator has since been added, along with new carpeting, painting, windows, and remodeled bathrooms.
