The focus of Dr. Luthy’s research is the biology and ecology of fishes, in particular, the early life stages.
Eggs, larvae, and juveniles are the life stages most susceptible to perturbations, be they pollution, climate change, or excess predation and/or competition due to invasive species.
Small changes in survival and growth rates of larvae and juveniles can have massive repercussions on recruitment and size of the adult stock.
Dr. Luthy has studied growth and habitat usage of young fishes in habitats ranging from the Gulf Stream to salt marshes to freshwater sounds.
