Institute of the Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
IEEE stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. It is the world's oldest and largest professional organization. Wordwide, IEEE consists of 10 regions. Regions 1 through 6 cover the United States. Region 6, the largest of the ten in terms of membership, covers the western United states. Region 6 consists of five areas. The Central Area of Region 6 represents all professional (practicing engineer) and student IEEE members in northern California, northern Nevada, and Hawaii.
Historically, the Pacific IEEE student branch has been very active within the Central Area. The other most active engineering schools in the Central Area include UC Davis, Sac State, Chico State, San Francisco State, University of Reno, and University of Hawaii. Occasionally active are UC Berkeley, Fresno State, and San Jose State.
The Central Area has two meetings each year: the Fall Meeting (normally in mid-October) and the Spring Meeting (normally the first Saturday of May). For students, the most important thing that happens at the Fall Meeting is the planning for the Spring Meeting.
Mission
IEEE promotes the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing, and applying knowledge about electro and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession.
