What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical Engineering is the study of the principles of force, energy, and motion. Mechanical engineers play a dominant role in enhancing general safety, economic vitality, and overall quality of living. Every aspect of life is touched by Mechanical Engineering. If something moves or uses energy, a Mechanical Engineer was probably involved in its design or production.

Mechanical Engineers design, analyze, and manufacture the machines and systems used by modern society.

Here is a short list of some products, devices, and systems that Mechanical Engineers have helped to develop:

Automobiles Aircraft
Robots Power Plants
Heating and Cooling systemsSolar Energy Devices
Computer Hardware & SoftwareSpace Vehicles
Home appliancesMicromachines
Specialized Industrial MachineryArtificial Limbs

What topics do Mechanical Engineers study?

  • Statics and Dynamics – the design and analysis of structures, machines, and systems.
  • Mechanics – the analysis of stresses imposed on machines and systems.
  • Energy Conversion – topics in thermodynamics, fluids, and heat transfer that teach students about energy conversion and how to use these principles to design efficient machines and systems.
  • Materials & Manufacturing – properties of materials and how they are used to make products and devices.
  • Business Issues – economics and product development. Many M.E.’s continue their education to earn Masters in Business Administration (MBA’s), and some earn dual degrees in business through the Engineering Management program.
