Board of Regents Nominating Procedures

  1. The Committee on Regents will report to the Board of Regents from time to time regarding a profile of the nature and number of Board members they consider appropriate to enhance and sustain the strength and diversity of the Board of Regents.
  2. Suggested candidates for consideration by the Committee are submitted by a member of the Board of Regents.  Alumni, faculty, and interested individuals are encouraged to bring names of candidates to the attention of a Regent.  A Regent who submits a candidate shall prepare a written statement in support of consideration by the Committee.
  3. The Committee will review the candidate's preliminary qualifications relative to Board member selection criteria and current member composite.
  4. If the candidate's qualifications are consistent with the criteria and composite, the Committee will cause to be determined, in a confidential manner, the interest of the candidate to be considered for nomination to the Board of Regents.
  5. If the candidate is interested, the Committee will complete an in-depth review of the individual's curriculum vitae.  If the Committee deems it appropriate to proceed with consideration, the Regent submitting the candidate will be so informed.
  6. The Committee will arrange for a personal visit with the candidate.  Among those to be included in the visit will be the Chair of the Board of Regents, President of the University, at least one member of the Committee, and such other persons as the Committee deems appropriate.
  7. After the visit with the candidate, the Chair of the Board and President will inform the Committee of their recommendations to proceed with consideration of the candidate.
  8. The Committee shall determine whether to nominate this candidate to membership on the Board of Regents.
  9. Upon nomination by the Committee, the Board of Regents shall vote to approve or decline the candidate as a member.
  10. Following that vote, the Chairman of the Board will extend to the nominee an invitation to join or convey the Board's regrets.

When a candidate for the Board of Regents is declined, it does not reflect on the individual's qualifications. An individual simply may not meet the present needs for Board membership. Candidates who are not approved may be considered for future membership.
