The Brubeck Institute was created in 2000 when University of the Pacific alumni Dave and Iola Brubeck agreed to place their extraordinary collection of correspondence, documents, recordings, manuscripts, photographs, programs, memorabilia, and other archival material in the Holt-Atherton Special Collections at the University of the Pacific Library. At that time, the agreement between the University and the Brubecks was that the collection would be developed and made accessible to scholars, and that the University would produce an annual event featuring performances, lectures, and symposia that would celebrate the music, ideas, and accomplishments of Dave Brubeck, as well as his influence on the world of music and ideas.
The Institute was the vision of the President of the University of the Pacific, Donald DeRosa, and former Dean of the Conservatory of Music and the first Director of the Brubeck Institute, Carl Nosse. The Executive Director from 2001 to 2005 was J.B. Dyas who was responsible for creating the educational components of the Institute, including the Brubeck Fellowship Program and the Summer Jazz Colony.
The first artistic director of the Brubeck Institute was Christian McBride. In that role he set both the educational and artistic standards for the Institute, and especially for the Fellowship Program.
