The Brubeck Festival 2003

The Brubeck Festival 2003 was significantly larger in scope than the first Festival in every respect. It took place from April 10 through 14, and was held in several venues including Faye Spanos Concert Hall and the Recital Hall on the University of the Pacific campus, in Atherton Auditorium on the campus of San Joaquin Delta College , in the Haggin Museum and Victory Park , and at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland , California . There were also more performing organizations involved including the Stockton Symphony Orchestra, Stockton Chorale, Turtle Island String Quartet, Christian McBride Trio, and the Capital Jazz Project. Many of the musicians in the Conservatory of Music also took part including the University Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Pacific Singers, Pacific Jazz Ensemble, and several faculty and student soloists. This also marked the appearance of the first Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet on a Brubeck Festival.

Among the highlights of the Festival were the performances of the Stockton Symphony Orchestra, which on Thursday night featured Howard Brubeck's Theme for June with Dave at the piano, Chris Brubeck's Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra with Chris Brubeck on bass trombone, and Blue Rondo a la Turk with Dave at the piano, Chris on bass trombone, and Fellowship students Joe Sanders on bass and Justin Brown on drums. On the Saturday night concert the Symphony featured Interplay for Three Violins and Orchestra by Chris Brubeck with violinists Christina Mok, Jeremy Cohen, and Evan Price, Elementals by Dave Brubeck, with Dave on piano, Bill Smith on clarinet, Chris Brubeck on electric bass, and Dan Brubeck on drums, and Take Five by Paul Desmond.

The focal point of the Brubeck Festival 2003 was the concert in Faye Spanos Concert Hall on April 11 simply titled “Celebrating the Music of Dave Brubeck”. This program included the following works.
