Jan. 1

The Record had a story about Stockton council members Susan Eggman and Steve Bestolarides and how both tend to vote against what the rest of the council is voting for. Pacific professor Bob Benedetti was quoted saying that Eggman and Bestolarides are trying hard to appear "independent."

Sacramento Magazine had a roundup of the significant Sacramento residents who died in 2007. Among those listed as former McGeorge administrator Jane Kelso.

Jan. 2

The Modesto Bee had a story about the deadline to apply for federal college aid is approaching fast. It mentioned University of the Pacific as one of the many local universities that is affected by the FAFSA deadlines.

The Record had an editorial about "What's not working" in San Joaquin County. It mentioned Pacific and said that despite Pacific's presence in the county, the community has not done enough to take advantage of the university and use it to attract better paying jobs and educate more people.

Vida en el Valle quoted both biology professor Greg C. Anderson and Pacific paleontologist Des Maxwell on a local man's discovery of a mastodon tooth.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story about what college students are doing during winter break. It mentioned that Pacific students are on break until the middle of January.

Jan. 3

Forbes Magazine quoted a study by Eberhardt professor John Knight that concluded that an incorrectly priced home will more likely sell for less than its real value than a home that's put on the market at the correct price.

RTE Radio One in Ireland aired the profile on Dave Brubeck and the Brubeck Institute. The interviews were conducted last April during the Brubeck Festival and the fund-raiser at Clint Eastwood's Carmel Ranch.

The Bakersfield Californian had a short story about California State University Bakersfield's basketball team scheduled to play against Pacific this week.

The Record had an editorial that praised University of the Pacific for becoming more involved in the local community. It credited Pacific officials for forming many local partnerships to work on education issues and for being a place where great performances and famous speakers can be seen year round.

Our Sports Central, an online news service, had a story that said Pacific alumnus Kevin Anderson was named an athletic trainer for the Chase Chevrolet All-Star Game, to be played on Jan. 23.

The Napa Valley Register had a news obit on Pacific alumnus George Blaufuss, Jr. He was 92.

The Wickenburg Sun had a news obit on Pacific alumnus Nathan Loveness. He was 36.

The Record had a story that said the Pacific Men's Basketball Team win over UC Riverside put Pacific into first place in the Big West division.

Jan. 4

The Willits News had a story about an upcoming piano concert. One of the feature performers is Pacific alumna Elizabeth MacDougall.

The Record had an editorial about the problems facing San Joaquin County in 2008. The editorial quoted the Eberhardt School of Business economic forecast that said personal income will rise about 5 percent in the next year.

Jan. 5

The Record had a feature story on men's basketball player Terrell Smith.

Jan. 6

The Bakersfield Californian had a story about CSU Bakersfield's men's basketball team loss to Pacific on Saturday. The Record had a similar story.

Jan. 7

Education professor Sue Eskridge was quoted in a Record article about how kids on vacation need to keep their minds active through books, board games and other learning opportunities.

Mark Plovnick, director of economic development at Pacific, was quoted in a story in The Record about how the rate of families moving out of California has slowed in the past year, though there are still more families moving out than moving into the state.

 The Sacramento Bee had a brief that said University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, has selected Charlene Mattison as assistant dean of advancement and Thom Main as associate dean for faculty scholarship.

Jan. 8

The Lahontan News (Nevada) had a story summarized all the judge races in the upcoming election. Two of the candidates - Jim Wilson and Noel Waters - are McGeorge alumni, the story said.

Norcalweddings, a blog that reviews popular wedding spots, had a review of Morris Chapel this week. All of the photos used in the blog came from Pacific's online Flickr group.

Jan. 9

The Philadelphia Trumpet, a magazine, ran the Chronicle of Higher Education story about how the mortgage crisis might affect incoming students and their ability to pay for college. Lynn Fox, the director of financial aid, was quoted in that story.

The Record had a feature story on how to select a good basketball. It quoted Pacific Men's Basketball Team guard C.J. Morgan about the importance of the ball's grip. Pacific Women's Basketball Coach Lynne Roberts also was quoted in the story on the same topic. Men's team member Chad Troyer was quoted saying that a ball has to be "broken in" to be useful during a game.

Jan. 10

The Record had a brief about a blood drive that Pacific is sponsoring for the Delta Blood Bank.

The Record had a feature story on the upcoming production of Madama Butterfly by Pacific’s Opera Department.

The Sacramento Bee had a feature story on the Schiele family, which has five members who are in law enforcement. Ashley Schiele, 21, will become the sixth member when she joins the Sacramento Police Department later this year. The story said her sister Stephanie, 22, is a student at McGeorge.

The Record had a walk-up story to the two women’s basketball games being played this weekend.

Jan. 11

The UCLA Daily Bruin had a walk-up story to this weekend’s Volleyball match against Pacific’s Men’s team.

Record columnist Ian Hill focused on professor Keith Hatschek’s new book “How to Get a Job in the Recording Industry” for his piece on the changing music industry. He also interviewed Hatschek for the column.

Jan. 12

The San Francisco Chronicle had a feature story on Jean Pfaelzer, a professor at the University of Delaware who is promoting her new book "Driven Out: The Forgotten War Against Chinese Americans." The story said she would speak at Pacific’s campus Thursday night.

The Record had a feature story about the upcoming production of Madama Butterfly as put on by Pacific’s Opera department along with the Stockton Opera Company.

The Maui News had a story that said Pacific Alumnus Roderick Fong was named the new football coach at Maui High. Fong is an engineering graduate from Pacific.

The Record had a walk-up story to the Pacific-Northridge basketball match up this weekend. The story pointed out that Northridge is celebrating 50 years of basketball this year.

Jan. 13

The Sacramento Bee had McGeorge alumnus Jonathan Stein answer questions submitted by readers who recently had their homes damaged in a series of winter storms in Northern California. Stein specializes in insurance claims.

The Record had a story that said Pacific’s women’s basketball team claimed its first victory ever in a game against another Big West member. Pacific beat Northridge 79-73. The record had a separate story about the men’s team loss to Northridge, 78-61.

Jan. 14

The Record had a feature story on the parenting classes offered by the Psychology department. The story featured a color photo of a Benerd student working with a toddler in one of the classes.

The Record had a brief about a speech that will be delivered by Garrett Ashley, California’s Undersecretary for International Trade, on the Stockton campus Tuesday.

The Record’s movers and shakers column mentioned that the Stockton law firm of Neumiller Beardslee hired McGeorge alumna Suzanne Kennedy.

The Sacramento Bee had a story about a community panel discussion that will be moderated by Clark Kelso, professor at McGeorge School of Law. The discussion will look at accusations that some youth offenders are being treated more harshly by the court system simply because of the color of their skin.

Jan. 15

The Record had a brief on the bilingual financial aid workshop being held at Pacific this weekend.

ABC News National out of New York quoted John Knight’s housing study that was quoted in Forbes Magazine earlier this month. The story specifically pointed out that Knight was a professor at the Eberhardt School of Business. The story can be found online

The Record had a story about Jean Pfaelzer, author of "Driven Out: The Forgotten War Against Chinese Americans." Pfaelzer is speaking at Pacific on Thursday.

Jan. 16

The Record had a story about a podcast the University produced featuring Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Science professor Rajul Patel. The podcast dealt with the Medicare Part D prescription plan and its recent changes.

The Record had a brief that said Pacific alumnus Mike Merriweather was hired to run the Teen Impact Center in downtown Stockton. Merriweather was a linebacker for the Pittsburgh Stealers.

Jan. 17

Jan. 18

The Record had a news-obit on firefighter Andrew Prouty. Prouty worked on an educational program for the firedepartment that was organized with help by Pacific’s faculty, the story said. Prouty also was a Pacific alumnus, according to his regular obituary.

The Modesto Bee had a story about the City of Turlock’s plan to collect 12.5 percent of all the revenue from a Poker club there. McGeorge professor Phil Wile was quoted in the story explaining the philosophy that “sin taxes” are affordable because they are taxes on services that aren’t considered to be “necessities” in life and therefore are not affecting the health and welfare of citizens.

The Record had a story on the Pacific Men’s basketball team’s win over Fullerton – 89 – 82.

The Record had a story about the Pacific Women’s basketball team’s win over Irvine – 69 – 59. It’s the team’s second win over another Big West Team, the story said.

Newslink, an alternative monthly magazine in Sacramento, had a story about the upcoming LGBQTIA Conference that will be held at Pacific in February.

The Central Valley Business Times had a brief about the new director of the Business Forecasting Center at the Eberhardt School of Business.

Eberhardt Dean Chuck Williams was on the 11 p.m. news on Channel 10 with advice on how to weather the rapid downturn in the economy.

The Record had an interview with the incoming director of the Business Forecasting Center – Jeffrey Michael.

The Idaho Press Tribune had a story that said Pacific Alumna Lenore Johnston was honored by the city of Caldwell for her volunteer service and for her 23-year career as a school teacher in that community.

The Epoch Times, a newspaper in Taiwan, had a review of the book “The DayBreak Eve,” written by McGeorge alumnus Tong Wenxun. His affiliation with McGeorge was mentioned in the story.

Jan. 19

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story about the salaries that teachers make in the area. The story mentioned that Pacific has a teacher credentialing program.

The Record had a story about how the Stockton rental market is strong but rents are not going up because of the housing crisis. Jeffrey Michael, the incoming director of the business forecasting center, was quoted in the story.

The Record had a story about how San Joaquin County’s unemployment rate jumped to a new four-year high. Business Forecasting Center consultant Sean Snaith was quoted in the story.

The San Bernardino Sun quoted Eberhardt Dean Chuck Williams in a story about the jump in the state’s unemployment rate.

Economics professor Sharmila King was quoted in a Fresno Bee story about the jump in the state’s unemployment rate.

Eberhardt Dean Chuck Williams was quoted in The Modesto Bee in a story about how high gas prices might affect the California economy in the next 12 months.

The Contra Costa Times ran an editorial written by Professor Gene Bigler about the need to improve relations with Guatamala.

Jan. 20

The Sacramento Bee had a story about a California-based federal prosecutor who may be nominated to head up the Federal DEA. McGeorge professor Gerald Caplan was quoted as saying that the roles as a federal prosecutor and head of the DEA are completely different and require different skills. The Modesto Bee and the Fresno Bee ran the same story.

Stockpoint.com ran The Record’s interview with Jeffrey Michael, the incoming director of the Business Forecasting Center.

The Record had a story about the Women’s Basketball Team loss to Fullerton.

The Record had a story about the Men’s Basketball Team win over Irvine.

Jan. 21

The Record had a feature story on the Natomas Pacific Pathways Charter High School in Sacramento that was started by McGeorge last year to better prepare students for college.

The Record had a brief that said Pacific alumnus Ryan Bray, sales consultant at Raymus Homes, has earned the designation as a certified new-home sales professional of the National Association of Home Builders.

The Merced Sun Star ran the Sacramento Bee’s story about the California-based federal prosecutor who may be nominted to head the DEA. McGeorge professor Gerald Caplan was quoted in that story.

The Merced Sun Star ran the Fresno Bee’s story about the jump in the state’s unemployment rate. Eberhard professor Sharmila King was quoted in that story.

Jan. 22

The Record had a story about the bilingual financial aid workshop that was sponsored by Pacific this weekend.

The Orlando Sentinel ran the Sacramento Bee story on the history of braces. Dr. Robert Boyd, professor and chairman of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of the Pacific's Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, was quoted in the story.

The Record had a brief about a Job Skills Workshop that will be presented in downtown Stockton by John Carvana, director of University of the Pacific's Career Resource Center.

Eberhardt Dean Chuck Williams was interviewed on the 6 p.m. news on Channel 13 about the morning stock market crash.

The Modesto Bee had a feature story on Pacific alumnus Scott Thomason, the basketball coach at Sierra High School in Manteca

The Record had a brief that said men’s basketball team member Anthony Brown was named the player of the week for the Big West Conference. This is the second time he’s received the award this season.

Jan. 23

Political Science professor and Jacoby Center Director Bob Benedetti was quoted in The Record about a debate in Manteca. The Manteca City Council is considering cutting subsidies to the Manteca Chamber of Commerce.

The Record had a walk-up to a “financial call in night” that they are co-sponsoring this week. McGeorge alumnus Scott Beattie is one of the people who will answer questions about financial issues.

The San Francisco Chronicle and its sister online publication SF Gate.com had a column about how a University of the Pacific professor was evicted from the Oakland zoo by security earlier this month. The zoo has since apologized, claiming that they thought he was an animal rights activist and did not know he was photographing animal enclosures for use in one of his lectures on zoology.

American Family Physician, a medical journal, ran an article that was co-written by Pacific alumnus Dr. Phillip Gregory.

Pacific student Taryn La Vallee was a contestant on “Wheel of Fortune.” During the show’s opening, she talked about how she attended University of the Pacific and really enjoyed being a student here.

Jan. 24

The Modesto Bee had a column that said both the High School Wrestling and Baseball championships will be moving to Pacific’s Stockton campus in the coming year.

The San Jose Business Journal and the East Bay Business Journal both ran a short story about how McGeorge professor Clark Kelso was named the receiver of the California prison health system.

The Record had a feature story on the free dental screenings offered by Pacific’s Dugoni School of Dentistry clinic in Stockton to Lincoln Elementary School students.

The Fresno and Sacramento Bees ran a story on McGeorge Professor Clark Kelso’s appointment to oversee the health system in California’s prisons. They also ran separate biographies on Kelso.

The New York Times ran a story on the appointment of McGeorge Professor Clark Kelso to oversee the health system in California’s prisons.

The Associated Press ran its own story of the appointment of McGeorge Professor Clark Kelso to oversee the California prison health system. The San Diego Tribune, The Record and the Modesto Bee ran the AP story.

The Los Angeles Time ran its own story of the Clark Kelso appointment.

The Record had a feature story on women’s basketball team member Beckett Brennan.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy published their annual “Top Donors” list today, focusing on 2007. The Powell donation to University of the Pacific led the College portion of the story. The Chronicle of Philanthropy's "A Year for Big Giving" feature had a sidebar with brief biographies of each of last year's top donors. The Powell biography used a nearly year-old quote mentioning art and law programs as potential beneficiaries. Since the initial announcement of the gift, scholarships and campus beautification have been identified as the planned uses of the fund.

The San Jose Mercury News and the San Francisco Chronicle ran their own stories about the appointment of McGeorge Professor Clark Kelso to oversee the health system in California prisons. The Fog City Journal ran a brief about the appointment.

CSTV.Com, CBS’s online sports guide, had a feature story on Pacific Baseball player Joe Oliveira. In it, Oliveira said that Pacific has really helped him become a better person and a better player. The story can be found here: http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/stories/012408aan.html

The Auburn Journal had a feature story on Pacific women’s team swimmer Kellyn Loehr. Loehr, a native of the Auburn area and a high school swimming champion there, is graduating this year.

Jan. 25

The headline “Tigers Maul UCSB” pretty much summed up the story in the UC Santa Barbara student newspaper this morning. Pacific’s men’s basketball team won 71-58 Thursday night. Several sports magazines, online sports guides, The San Diego Tribune, The San Jose Mercury News and The Record had similar stories.

Eberhardt Dean Chuck Williams was quoted in a Sacramento Bee story about the “Tax Relief Plan” approved by Congressional leaders yesterday. He said the average $600 rebates might be nice pocket change for some folks, but it won’t last long. "It's not the same thing as having lower taxes month after month or having higher wages month after month." he said.

The Davis Enterprise had a story that said McGeorge alumnus James Walker is running for judge in Yolo County.

The Tri-Valley Herald, the San Mateo Times and Oakland Tribune and their joint online publication InsideBayArea.com ran a story about McGeorge Professor Clark Kelso being appointed to oversee the health system in California prisons.

Yahoo News ran a press release that said Pacific alumna Linda Hischier was hired as the new Vice President, Commercial Loan Division for Oak Valley Community Bank, based in Stanislaus County.

“Tigers Prevail in Thriller” was the headline on a Record story about the Pacific Women’s Basketball Teams one-point victory over Cal Poly Thursday night.

Jan. 26

The Whittier News had an editorial that said it hoped McGeorge professor Clark Kelso would be more reasonable in fixing the state prison’s health system. The paper’s concern is that Kelso might favor an idea of turning a closed prison in the Whittier news into a hospital for prisoners. The paper opposes that idea.

The San Francisco Chronicle had a feature story on Pacific alumnus Joseph Grubaugh, one of several people in the Bay Area who makes hand-made instruments (cellos, violas and other stringed instruments) to order for musicians.

The Modesto Bee had a story about all the different post-graduate degree programs available in the San Joaquin Valley. It mentioned that Pacific offers many masters and doctorate degrees and had a Web link to Pacific’s Web page that explained all the various post-baccalaureate programs.

The Merced Sun Star had a story about the 100th anniversary of the United Methodist Church of Atwater. The story said the anniversary celebration also will welcome the church’s newest pastor, Pacific alumna Rev. Jennifer Irvine Goto.

The Sacramento Bee had a short story about the appointment of McGeorge alumnus Gerrit W. Wood to a judge’s seat in Sacramento Superior Court.

The Fresno Bee had a story about the appointment of McGeorge Alumnus Gary Johnson to the Tulare Superior Court Bench.

Jan. 27

The Modesto Bee had a feature story on Modesto Junior College basketball player John Potter, a 37-year-old businessman who is returning to college to try and earn a degree. The story mentioned that Potter originally was a student at Pacific nearly two decades ago, but had to drop out due to a family crisis.

Jan. 28

The Record had a brief that said Pacific alumna Linda Hischier has been named vice president and commercial loan officer at Oak Valley Community Bank. The Modesto Bee had a similar brief last week.

The Record had a story about area volunteers who are working for various presidential candidates .The story featured Pacific student Adam Ellison, who is working for the Mitt Romney campaign.

The Fort Worth Business Press had a brief that said Texas Wesleyan University’s School of Law is co-sponsoring the two-day Fourth International Conference on Contracts from Feb. 8-9 at the Pacific McGeorge School of Law.

The Los Angeles Times had an editorial that discussed the appointment of McGeorge Professor Clark Kelso as the head of the California prison Health Care System. The editorial praised Kelso’s appointment as a step in the right direction.

The Record had a story about how well the Mens’ Basketball team is doing and how tonight’s game will be nationally televised on ESPN. SanLuisObispo.com had a similar story.

The Sacramento Bee had a lengthy news-obit on Pacific alumnus Walter Harvey. Harvey, an architect, was most well-known for restoring the Delta King steamboat and making it a popular attraction and for fighting the closure of a fishery in Truckee.

Jan. 29

Tickertech.com, an online business news service, ran a story that said SCI Real Estate Investments promoted Pacific alumna Karen E. Kennedy to Chief Operating Officer.

The Modesto Bee ran a brief that said Jeffrey Michael is the new director of the Eberhardt School of Business Forecasting Center.

Theater professor Macelle Mahala was quoted in a Record story about the revival of burlesque at the Black Bart Playhouse in Murphys (Calaveras County).

The Record had a story about Pacific’s 64-69 loss against Cal-Poly. The San Luis Obsipo Tribune had a similar story.

The Record had a story about how animated Pacific’s students were during Monday night’s basketball game against Cal Poly. The story concluded that students should show up to all the games and show that much cheer, not just the games that are being nationally televised.

The Record had a brief that said Junior Chad Troyer on Monday became the third Pacific basketball player this season and second in two weeks to win the Big West Conference Player of the Week award.

Jan. 30

The Record had an editorial urging support of Measure Q, a school bond measure. Pacific’s Vice President of Advancement Ted Leland was quoted in the editorial saying that passage of Measure Q must be a “community effort.”

The Oakland Tribune and its sister paper The Tri Valley Herald both ran a feature story on West High School basketball player Whitney Howard. She has seen significant improvements in her game since she started weight lifting. She was quoted in the story saying she was introduced to weight lifting by the staff at University of the Pacific when she attended a youth basketball camp in Stockton several years ago.

The Record ran a story that said Pacific alumnus Jim Colletto was named the offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions this week.

Jan.31

The Modesto Bee had a feature story on the Modesto recording studio “Modesto Sound.” The studio gives local bands a chance to release their own albums. The studio is owned by Pacific alumna Brenda Francis, the story said.

The Record had a brief about a rally to show support for Hillary Clinton that will be held at Pacific today.

The Record had a story about the Community Baseball Night dinner, to be held next Wednesday at Brookside Country Club. The event, organized by the Pacific baseball program, is meant to bring together the area's baseball community, including youth, high school and college players, as well as parents and fans. CSTV, CBS’ online sports page, also carried the story.

The Record had a story about the SoundImageSound concert that will be held at Pacific Friday. The multi-media collection of electronic songs was organized by Pacific professor Robert Coburn, the story said. Coburn was quoted in the story as well.

Univision, the Spanish-language television network, had footage of a pro-Hillary Clinton rally held on the Stockton Campus earlier in the day.
