Dean Jain's Bio
Ravi Jain, Ph.D., P.E. DEE
Ravi Jain is Dean and Professor of the School of Engineering and Computer Science, University of the Pacific, Stockton, California. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from California State University, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech. He studied public administration and public policy at Harvard, earning an M.P.A. degree and did additional graduate studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Jain has been an Associate Dean for Research and International Engineering and Executive Director of Interdisciplinary Research Centers, and director of the environmental engineering management graduate program
at the University of Cincinnati, College of Engineering.
He has held research and faculty appointments at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been a Littauer Fellow Harvard University, and a Fellow, Churchill College, Cambridge University.
He has directed a staff of over 200 engineers and scientists, conducting interdisciplinary research for the U.S. Army, and was the Founding Director of the U.S. Army Environmental Policy Institute (AEPI). He has worked for the California State Department of Water Resources and industry and has been a consultant to federal agencies, international organizations and private industry and has provided expert testimony concerning environmental engineering and policy related issues.
Dr. Jain has served on numerous National Task Forces and Advisory Councils for the U.S. Department of Defense, NSF, Navy, Army, EPA and NAS. He was elected Fellow American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Fellow ASCE, and Diplomate American Academy of Environmental Engineers. In 1989 he was a recipient of the Founders’ Gold Medal for Innovative Research and was selected Federal Engineer of the Year by the United States National Society of Professional Engineers. He was the only professional to be selected from among 180,000 federal engineers.
He has published thirteen books and over 150 journal articles, book chapters and technical reports. He is Coeditor-in-Chief International Journal – Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy and Associate Editor International Journal – Technology Transfer and Commercialization. His four most recent books (covers shown below) include Technological Choices for Sustainability (Springer, 2004), Environmental Assessment (McGraw Hill, 2001), Better Environmental Policy Studies – How to Design and Conduct More Effective Analyses (Island Press, 2001) and Management of Research and Development Organizations – Managing the Unmanageable (Wiley, 1997).
