One Day Nonprofit Board Training

In the past, boards brought on new members with little experience, little training and assumed they would pick up what they needed to know. Today it is important that organizations are governed by people who understand their role as a board member in leading their organization. People want to be effective board members but don’t always have all the knowledge or experience they need.

On Friday, October 23, 2009, the University of the Pacific Westgate Center for Management Development will hold a new one day training program specifically for nonprofit boards. The purpose of this new program is to help develop leaders serving on nonprofit boards. These core topics build a bridge between board members and management and will enable the board and their organization to reach their full potential. A few of the topics discussed include:

  • The role of the board
  •  Setting the mission and vision of the organization (What’s our purpose?)
  • Identifying and developing effective board members
  • Understanding financial statements
  • Hiring and evaluating the Executive Director or CEO
  • Running effective board meetings
  • Creating successful annual board retreats
  • Creating a culture for success from the board down

The Westgate Center is proud to partner with the Leadership Stockton Alumni Association (LSAA) in this new program. LSAA strives to help in the development of leaders in our community. The Westgate Center and the LSAA feel it is important for boards to send at least two people from each organization, ideally a board member and the executive director.
