What is Electrical Engineering?

Electrical engineers work with all manners of electronic devices and can have a career in almost any industry.  They design, develop and test electrical equipment and their tasks can range from designing and building medical equipment to working for the military or department of defense.

Some of the areas of interest that an electrical engineer can work in are:

  • Integrated circuits and solid state devices – this area focuses on new products like electronic controls for electronic games, appliances and navigation systems.
  • Robotics – this area focuses on artificial intelligence and designing robotic arms.
  • Power systems – this area focuses on power grids, generators and making energy efficient
  • Communications systems – this area focuses on television, radio, telephone technology and wireless and laser transmission.
  • Computers – this area focuses on microprocessors, digital systems and computer hardware design and manufacturing.
