What: University band competition

When: 6 to 10 p.m., April 6

Where: Raymond Hall, Pacific's Stockton Campus

The sweet soothing sounds of chamber music and opera are frequently heard piping from the halls of the University of the Pacific's Conservatory of Music, but on April 10th (6-10pm) the shrill shriek of strings will be replaced by the hum of amplifiers, and crash of cymbals as four local bands compete at the 3rd annual University of the Pacific Battle of the Bands, presented by the University Townhouse Community.

The event, which is open to the public, will take place in Pacific's Raymond Hall. Tickets will cost up to $10. Only University bands can participate.

Also attending will be the San Joaquín AIDS Foundation, who will be spreading awareness of HIV/AIDS to college students and community members alike. All proceeds will be presented to the San Joaquín AIDS Foundation for AIDS awareness efforts.

The night's lineup will include Avon Union, Alida, Susurrus Rex and Phunque-y. All band members for each of the four groups are students at the University of the Pacific's Conservatory of Music. In addition, all bands are also members of Musical Fusion (musicalfusion.org), a group of several university bands at Pacific.

Avon Union's influences include Queens of the Stone Age, Weezer and Led Zeppelin, among others, and describe their music as, "uniting to deliver a sonic boom of aural pleasure". Alida's sound reminds one of the Foo Fighters, and has been booked by local venues including the Fat Cat in Modesto. Susurrus Rex, formerly known as Applecore, is the third band in the lineup. They reunite the violin with rock and folk sounds to produce a unique experience. Phunque-y, the most musically diverse of the groups, offers a healthy dose of funk to make this year's roster truly eclectic.

Battle of the Bands is organized by the University Townhouses, a University of the Pacific apartment community that houses 142 students. For more information and/or tickets please call 209.957.7114.
