April 1

The Bakersfield Californian ran an article about the latest forecast from the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center that says we are most definitely in a recession.

The Record had a feature story about a group of Chinese delegates who are taking courses through Pacific’s Center for Professional and Continuing Education. The delegates are learning how the American real estate market works.

The South Bend Tribune had a story that said Pacific alumnus Marvin V. Curtis has been hired as the next dean of Indiana University South Bend’s Raclin School of the Arts.

The Record had a story about the Jane Austen community class that will be presented by professor Amy Smith this month.

Aviation International Magazine had a profile on Pacific alumnus Paul Touw, founder of XOJet, a company that builds customized jets for individuals.

The Los Angeles Times had a short story about how Mexico’s Women’s Olympic Soccer team has several American players on it, including University of the Pacific student Angelica Figueroa.

The San Diego Union had a brief that said McGeorge was one of several California law schools listed among the top graduate schools in the country, according to the recent US News and World Report Graduate School rankings.

Swimming World Magazine and NBC Olympic Sports both carried a story that said Pacific swimming coach Greg Meehan resigned in order to become the coach to the U.S. Men’s Swimming Team.

April 2

The Record had an editorial criticizing Stockton Mayor Ed Chavez for holding secret discussions about forming a municipal electric district. Jacoby Center director Bob Benedetti was paraphrased in the editorial saying the secrecy probably has more to do with trying to keep stuff secret from PG&E than the public.

The Record had a brief about the Thursday night concert by jazz pianist Hiromi. The brief said a longer story about the event would be in Thursday’s paper. The Record had a second brief about tonight’s concert by Deepak Ram. Both concerts are part of the Brubeck Festival.

April 3

The Record had a feature story on Hiromi, the Japanese jazz pianist who will perform tonight as part of the Brubeck Festival. The Record also had a brief about Saturday’s “Jazz on the Mile” concert on Pacific Ave., also part of the Brubeck Festival.

The Xinhua News Agency (China) ran the Los Angeles Times story that said California is in a recession. That story referenced the Eberhard Business Forecasting Center report that was recently released.

Several online news services picked up a press release that said McGeorge alumnus Robert Busch has released the book “How To Win Your California Divorce, The Beginner’s Guide”, a 73 page book written for California residents who are considering divorce and know little, if anything, about California divorce law.”

April 4

Mike Fitzgerald had a column in The Record lamenting the recent death of former Pacific English professor Charles Clerc.

The Record had a story about how more big-name acts are coming to Stockton lately. The story mentioned the Talib Kweli concert held at Pacific last week.

The Sacramento Bee had a story about a conference being held with McGeorge law students and UC Davis Medical Students discussing “end of life” issues.

Smart Money, an online financial advice service, referenced Eberhardt Professor John Knight’s study that said people who list their homes at above the average market value usually have to sell it for about 9 percent below market value in order to make a deal go through.

The Washington Times ran Pacific’s Press release on the Brubeck Festival, which is moving to Washington D.C. next week.

Channel 10 ABC in Sacramento revisited an old interview with Pacific communications professor Alan Ray in a story about the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Ray is the son of the police captain who was investigated King’s murder.

April 5

ABC News in Salt Lake City had a story that said McGeorge alumnus Elder L. Whitney Clayton was named to replace Elder Christofferson as a member of the Presidency of the Seventy in the Church of Latter Day Saints.

The Record had a story about Pacific Chemistry Professors Elfi Kraka’s and Deiter Cramer’ sresearch into a potentially powerful anti-tumor drug. If their research is correct, they may have discovered a molecule that could kill tumors without harming healthy tissue. The Therapeutic Daily News also carried the same story.

April 6

The Washington Post ran a lengthy feature story on Dave Brubeck and the current Brubeck Festival, being held in Washington D.C. this week. The Miami Herald ran the same story.

NanoTech Wire had a story about Pacific Chemistry Professors Elfi Kraka’s and Deiter Cramer’ sresearch into a potentially powerful anti-tumor drug. The Eureka Times Standard had a brief that said Physical therapy business ept Rehabilitation has hired Pacific alumna Aiyana Worden.

The Washington Post had a news obit on General John Toomay, who helped shape U.S. Nuclear policy. He was a Pacific alumnus.

The Sacramento Bee ran an editorial written by McGeorge Professor Clark Kelso about the issues facing California prison's healthcare systems.

April 7

The Record had a feature story on retired Pacific Professor Doug Smith and his current photo show.

The Record had a brief that said Pacific alumna Kristen Spracher-Birtwhistle was elected to the Stockton Goodwill Board of Directors.

Fox 40 KTXL from Sacramento had a short clip on the sexual assault that was reported on campus Sunday morning. Channel 58 KQCA had a short story about the reported assault. The Stockton Record had a brief about it.

April 8

News Day, the Boston Globe and the Belleview News Democrat (St. Louis) had news obits about Pacific alumnus General John Toomay.

The Record had a brief that said Pacific’s field hockey team finished in fifth place in a weekend tournament against some of the best teams in the country.

The Record ran the Washington Post article about Dave Brubeck and the 50th anniversary of cultural diplomacy.

The Australian Newspaper, Breibart.com, The Turkish Press and several other news services ran the State Department press release about Dave Brubeck receiving the Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy. Brubeck’s affiliation with Pacific was mentioned in the release.

The Lodi News Sentinel had a story about all the money Congressman Jerry McNerney has requested for local projects this year. Among the requests are $500,000 to improve Pacific’s Business Forecasting Center.

April 9

The Visalia Times had a story that said Eberhardt alumnus Mike Cully, whose vision helped transform a languishing Visalia Chamber of Commerce into an aggressive advocate for business during his four years as president and CEO, stepped down Tuesday to become the new CEO for the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce.

April 10

The Record had a front-page story that said Pacific baseball coach Ed Sprague admitted to using steroids and a corked bat when he played in the major leagues.

Terranet, a news service for foreign nationals who live in the Middle East, ran the State Department press release about Dave Brubeck receiving the Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy. Brubeck’s affiliation with Pacific was mentioned in the release.

The Record had a story that said the Tracy Soroptimist International handed out scholarships to women who are making a significant impact in the area. One of those recipients is speech pathology student Donita L. Whitaker. Whitaker said she hopes to transfer to Pacific and get her degree there.

The Record had a story saying Stockton City Council candidate Michael Merriweather, a life insurance agent and former NFL linebacker, has sued New York Life Insurance Co., claiming he was harassed, discriminated against and intimidated because he is black. The story mentioned that Merriweather is a Pacific alumnus.

The Record had a feature story on Pacific student and tennis player David Gonzalez.

WSOC TV and three other stations ran a story that talked about how to improve football playoff games. The story repeated a long-running rumor that Pacific is going to restart its football program with the financial backing of Alex Spanos.

The Record had a feature story on Pacific professor Frank Wiens. The story focused on two piano concertos he would perform with the Stockton Symphony this week.

The Record had a story about all the production that goes on behind the scenes for hockey games at the Stockton arena. The story interviewed Pacific alumna Jessica Fillo, manager of team and game operations for the Stockton Thunder.

April 11

The Record had a feature story on Pacific students David Mayman and Ian Keighley and how they have successfully booked many local rock bands into playing at University of the Pacific in the past year.

The Salem Statesman Journal had a brief that said Pacific alumna Selena Ho has resigned as assistant basketball coach at Oregon State.

The Record had a story that said Pacific student Simon Chen-Byerley likely will become the all-time leader for games played in Pacific men's volleyball history during the weekend.

The Bakersfield Californian had a brief that said McGeorge alumnus Harley F. Pinson has joined the Bakersfield law firm of Klein, DeNatale, Goldner, Cooper, Rosenlieb & Kimball LLP as a partner.

The Central Valley Business Times had a brief that said McGeorge alumna Laurie Wong Hodges joined the law firm Downey Brand LLP in Sacramento as an associate with the firm's environmental law practice group.

April 12

The Modesto Bee had a profile on local rock band Suicide Shift. The band includes Pacific alumnus Myron Smallin as a member.

The Record had a news obit on Apostolic Church Bishop Lewis Stallworth Sr. , a Pacific alumnus. He was 84.

The Record ran a positive review of Conservatory professor Frank Wiens’ concert with the Stockton Symphony this weekend.

The Sacramento Bee had a story that said a Sutter County Sheriff’s Deputy would not face charges in the accidental shooting death of his three-year-old son. McGeorge Professor Michael Vitiello was quoted in the story.

April 13

South Coast Today (coastal area, Massachusetts) ran the Washington Post article about Dave Brubeck’s legacy as a diplomat.

April 14

The Record had a story on the “Ebony Fashion Faire” held in Stockton Sunday. It mentioned that the magazine Ebony gave out eight $1,000 scholarships to students who plan to attend Pacific next year.

The Record had a story that said Pacific alumnus Vincent Augello was inducted into the St. Mary’s Hall of Fame over the weekend.

The Record had a brief about C. Bridget Welch being named the new dean of the library at Pacific.

The Record had a story that said Pacific’s softball team was defeated by UC Riverside in the Big West playoffs this weekend, the first time in several years that UC Riverside beat Pacific’s softball team in a conference game.

All About Jazz, an online music magazine, had a short story about Conservatory professor Patrick Langham’s release of a new jazz CD.

The Wichita Eagle (Kansas) had a story that said Eberhardt Dean Chuck Williams is one of the finalists for business school dean at the Barton School of Business.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune had a feature story on McGeorge student and triathlete Olympian Victor Plata. Plata hopes to graduate from McGeorge this year and to compete in the Olympics this summer.

April 15

The Record had a guest column that focused on the upcoming Pacific production of the play “On the Verge.”

Voice of America ran the Washington Post story about the 50th anniversary of Dave Brubeck’s state-department tour of Europe.

The Vallejo Times Herald had a story that said the economy will probably turn around in the next 12 months, but “it will be a bumpy ride.” The story quoted a Business Forecasting Center report issued earlier this year.

The Darien Times and the Hersam Acorn (Connecticut) had a news-obit on Pacific alumnus Kenneth Brusven. He was 65.

April 16

The Record ran a front-page story about how diligent and serious Pacific is about student safety, especially in light of the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings.

KFSN Radio in Fresno interviewed McGeorge professor Linda Carter about the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that death penalties do not have to be “pain free.”

KFBK Radio in Sacramento interviewed Student Life vice president Elizabeth Griego about all the steps Pacific has taken to improve security since the Virginia Tech shooting last year.

April 17

The Record had a walk-up story about this weekend’s Women’s Leadership Conference at Pacific.

Eberhardt Dean Chuck Williams was quoted in a Sacramento Bee article about how bankruptcy filings increased 100 percent from 2006 to 2007. He said there were a number of factors, from the first round of interest rate increases on home mortgages to people trying to beat the changes in laws in who can file for protection.

The Record had a brief about “Great Oglee Mooglee” playing in the McCaffrey Center this afternoon.

The Denver Post had a brief that said Air Academy baseball champion Ron Burton Jr. will play for Pacific next year.

The Tri-Valley Herald had a feature story that said El Camino High teacher and long-time coach Lonnie Beckenhauer is retiring. Beckenhauer is a Pacific alumnus, the story said.

The Record had a story that said Claire McLeod from Australia and Gretchen Tiernan of Roseville will play basketball for Pacific next year.

April 18

The Record had a follow-up story to baseball coach Ed Sprague’s comments about steroid use and the use of corked bats. The story quoted members of Sprague’s former team, the Toronto Blue Jays, as criticizing Sprague’s comments.

The Record had a brief that said authors Camille Norton and David Humphreys would conduct a book signing at Morris Chapel on Tuesday.

The Record ran the official obituary on Pacific alumnus and local bishop Lewis D. Stallworth Sr.

The San Diego Union had a brief that said Pacific alumnus Mike Cully, 42, will take over in May as president and chief executive of the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce.

April 19

The Fresno Bee had a story about a new report that showed unemployment rates in the San Joaquin Valley have hit double digits again. Jeffrey Michael, director of the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center, was quoted in the story. The Record had a similar story.

The Record had a story about the upcoming Asparagus Festival and how organizers are trying to give the festival a clearer message. In it, the story cited a study conducted last year by Pacific students that showed that most people were unaware that the Asparagus Festival acts as a large fund-raiser for dozens of community-based organizations.

The Record had a feature story about Pacific’s “Tiger Cubs” program which allows any child under 12 to attend a Pacific sporting event for free. Georgia Kovich-Lee, Pacific's director of athletic marketing, was quoted in the story saying that besides benefiting families, it benefits higher education as the program is good way to get children to start thinking about college.

The Record had a story that said Pacific sophomore Patrick Kucich is currently in the lead in the Canadian Tour's Stockton Sports Commission Classic golf tournament.

The Record had a feature story on Pacific softball coach Brian Kolze, who has brought the team to the NCAA championships in seven out of the past 12 seasons and could be closing in on his 500th win as a Pacific coach.

April 20

The San Francisco Chronicle had a story about the race for mayor in Sacramento. It ran a photo of candidate Kevin Johnson visiting the McGeorge School of Law last week.

April 21

The Record had a story about the sixth consecutive loss by Pacific’s baseball team this season.

The Fresno Bee had a story looking at the differing opinions between the two main candidates for City Council. One of the candidates is McGeorge alumnus Larry Westerlund.

The Record had a brief that said Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center director Jeff Michael will speak at a community forum Wednesday about the local economy.

April 22

The UC Santa Cruz student newspaper had a story about a panel of experts who talked about what post-graduate students need to do if they decide to pursue a career in law. One of the panelists was McGeorge dean of admissions Adam Barrett.

McGeorge student Victor Plata, an Olympic triathelete, was quoted in a story in the Santa Cruz Sentinel about local high school student Michael Landry, who is showing a lot of promise in track and swimming events.

The Marin Independent Journal had a news obit on Pacific alumna Beverly Bastian, who helped save many landmarks from demolition over the last-half century. She was 88.

The Record had a brief about the Pacific golf team’s performance in the Big West Conference, happening this week. Pacific’s team members struggled for most the day, but are still in contention for the championship, the story said.

The Record had a story about incoming Pacific student Richard Dietrich, who recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

The Calaveras Enterprise had a story that said local high school soccer champion Angelica Figueroa has agreed to attend Pacific next year.

April 23

The Omaha World Herald had a story that mentioned that local high school basketball champion Jennifer Jorgensen will attend Pacific next year.

The Gazette (Maryland) had a story that said local high school volleyball champion Arielle Goldberg will attend Pacific next year, which has shocked the local sports community. Her father is the long-time volleyball coach at American University.

411 Mania.com, an online entertainment community, had a short story that said the rock band “The Used” will play at Pacific in about two weeks.

The Record had a brief about the “Earth Day” activities happening on campus this week. The brief highlighted the “King Corn” documentary event on Thursday. The producer of that film will be on campus to show his film.

The San Jose Mercury News ran a story from the Los Gatos Bulletin about how Pacific alumnus Kale Wedemeyer was inducted in to the Los Gatos Hall of Fame.

The Fresno Bee ran an editorial urging the state to establish a Pharmacy School in the Fresno Area. The editorial mentioned that the closes pharmacy school in the region is the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at University of the Pacific.

April 24

The Record had a story that said Pacific and El Concilio hosted a roundtable discussion and workshop on how to get citizenship and immigration issues in the United States.

The Record had a story about a protest held on the Pacific Stockton campus by Cambodian students and residents protesting the way Southeast Asians are treated by the immigration and naturalization service.

The Record had a story about an economic forum hosted Wednesday by “Christiadi, a University of the Pacific regional economic analyst who goes by one name,” and Jeffrey Michael, the new director of the Business Forecasting Center.

The Bay Area Reporter had a story about how a dental clinic for AIDS patients will be closing in San Francisco because Medical payments no longer cover costs of the services. Dr. Richard Fredekind, associate dean for clinical services at the University of the Pacific, was quoted in the story.

The Charlotte Observer had a run-down of all the candidates running for the 9th Congressional District there. Pacific alumnus Ross Overby was named as one of the candidates.

April 25

The Record had a Web-only story announcing President Don DeRosa’s retirement announcement.

The Guardsman (City College of San Francisco newspaper) had a brief about a free dental clinic being hosted by the Dugoni School of Dentistry.

KFBK Radio just ran a story on President DeRosa’s retirement announcement.

KFIV Radio in Modesto had a short story on President DeRosa’s retirement announcement.

The Modesto Bee and the Stockton Record had a story on their Web page about Dr. DeRosa’s retirement announcement.

The Jewish News Weekly (Sacramento) had a feature story on Pacific alumnus Eric Schoen, a musician who performs every summer for teenagers at a Jewish summer camp.

The Tri-Valley Herald and several of its sister papers had a story about how the East Bay economy is growing much slower than the rest of the Bay area. Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center director Jeffery Michael was quoted in the story.

April 26

The Sacramento Bee had a short story about Dr. DeRosa’s retirement announcement. The Record had a longer front-page story on the same issue.

The online music review site, DRM Alternatives, had an article about the new music “Exodus,” composed by Pacific alumnus David Itkin. Itkin is the conductor of the Arkansas Symphony orchestra. “Exodus” is being performed this month with guest star William Shatner as narrator.

The Modesto Bee had a story about the graduation ceremony at Modesto Junior College. The story mentioned that the student speaker for the ceremony, Liz Musquiz, plans to transfer to Pacific to earn a degree in Sociology.

The Modesto Bee had a brief that said Modesto Junior College student Yasin Shan was named the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) Student of the Year. The brief said that Shan has been accepted by the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and will be entering the pharmacy program next year.

The Sacramento Bee had a news obit on Pacific alumnus Joseph Axup. He was 81.

Bloomberg had a story that said California Public Employees' Retirement System Chief Executive Officer Fred Buenrostro may leave amid tensions with the board. The story said he’s an alumnus of McGeorge School of Law.

The Record had a story that said Pacific alumnus Dan Reichert will be inducted into the Pacific Athletic Hall of Fame.

April 27

Voice of America had a story about Dave Brubeck’s history as a cultural diplomat for the State Department.

McGeorge Professor Brian Landsburg was quoted in a Fresno Bee story about a man arrested on drug charges who also made a music video where he shouted an expletive at the “federal government.” The video was introduced as evidence in his trial.

The Hawaii Tribune Herald had a review of a play written by Pacific alumna Lee Cataluna. The play is called “Super Secret Squad.” The paper gave it a good review.

The Record had a story about an experiment in the Stockton City Hall where people were randomly called and asked to participate in a phone meeting to discuss crime. Pacific Professor Bob Benedetti was quoted in the story saying that some voters may be impressed by the new high-tech way that City Hall is trying to reach out to the public while others may just be turned off by the whole process.

The Record had a story about how Medi-Cal coverage is going to be cut by 10 percent in July because of budget cuts imposed by Gov. Schwarzenegger. Pacific Pharmacy Professor Ed Sherman was quoted in the story saying that the state’s poorest citizens will be hit hardest by this cut.

The North County Times (Escondido) had an obit on Dugoni alumnus Robert Bruce Brown. He was 74.

The Marin Independent Journal had an obit on Pacific alumna Phyllis J. Stewart, a school teacher. She was 90.

The Record had a short story that said it’s looking for volunteers to receive a “financial makeover” from a team of experts for a future story. One of the experts is McGeorge alumna Sabrina Schneweis-Coe, a Lodi tax attorney.

The Contra Costa Times had an obit on Pacific alumnus Philip W. Haag. He was 84.

The Modesto Bee had an obit on Pacific alumnus Eric Clifforth Jacobsen. He was 90.

The Record had a story that said Pacific softball coach Brian Kolze is one win away from his 500th win as a Pacific coach.

The Record had a story that said Pacific alumnus and two-time Olympic Gold Medal Swimmer Brad Schumacher returned to Pacific Saturday to be inducted into the Pacific Athletics Hall of Fame.

April 28

The Record had a story about DevCon, a construction company that recently opened an office in Stockton. Vice President Pat Cavanaugh was quoted in the story explaining why the University hired DevCon to build both the biology and University Center buildings.

The Record had a brief that said Pacific alumna Donna Kane has been named a vice president at First Wachovia in the Stockton office.

The Record had a feature story on Sierra High School principal Rick Arucan, who announced he is retiring. Arucan is a Pacific alumnus.

April 29

The Santa Cruz Sentinel had a lengthy news obit on Pacific alumnus and former champion golfer Bryan Douglas Pini. He was 49.

The Merced Sun Star had a short story that said Pacific alumnus and Atwater native Matt Hansen finished in fourth place for the Nationwide Tour golf tournament, his best finish ever.

The Laredo Morning Times had a brief that said Pacific regent and alumnus Jose Hernandez will give a lecture about his life to the community.

April 30

The Record had an editorial praising Dr. DeRosa’s time as president of the University.

Good Times, an entertainment magazine in Santa Cruz, had a story about the Brubeck Jazz Quintet and their upcoming concert in that city.

The Record had a story about how Duraflame is trying to reposition its market brand. Professor Suzanne Walchli was quoted in the story.

The Washington Post had a brief that said Arielle Goldberg will play volleyball for Pacific next year, even though her father coaches American University’s volleyball team.
