California Pioneer John Sutter the focus of a campus symposium

The 57th California History Institute, the legacy of Pacific historians Rockwell Hunt and Coke Wood, and sponsored by the John Muir Center, will be held on campus at Pacific April 25 and 26, 2008 and will focus on "John A. Sutter and His World." Award-winning author and historian, Albert L. Hurtado (Ph.D. UCSB) will keynote the luncheon on April 26 with remarks from his new book, John A. Sutter: A Life on the North American Frontier (2007). Other Sutter specialists including Iris Engstrand (U. San Diego), Ken Owens (CSU Sacramento), Alexander Petrov (Russian Academy of Sciences), George Harwood Phillips (California Indian specialist), and Roger Werner.
