Music Therapy Internships
Conservatory of Music
At the University of the Pacific, music therapy internships and other "experiential learning" programs are a major part of that preparation. Coursework in music therapy is only the first step toward becoming a board-certified music therapist. To achieve certification, all music therapy students must also complete a minimum number of hours of on-site clinical training experience, and demonstrate competencies in musical and therapy skills as required by the American Music Therapy Association, or AMTA. The experiential learning occurs in two stages: fieldwork courses and internships.
All students get direct, hands-on experience in several fieldwork courses where qualified, Board-Certified Music Therapists model, guide, and support each student in learning how to use music to serve the needs of a variety of people in our community, in settings such as special education classrooms, mental health and developmental centers, nursing care facilities, and programs for at-risk youth. We make sure that students are well prepared for the challenges and responsibilities of their music therapy internships, the final step before tackling the job market. All internships are approved by the American Music Therapy Association. To be eligible for internship training, students must meet course and fieldwork requirements.
