Francois Rose

Associate Professor of Music Theory & Composition

Francois Rose is associate professor of music theory and composition and has been at the University of the Pacific since 1997. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from McGill University, his Master of Music degree from McGill University where he studied composition with John Rea and computer music with Bruce Pennycook. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California-San Diego, where he studied composition with Roger Reynolds and Brian Ferneyhough and did acoustical research with F. Richard Moore. He also studied composition and computer music with Tristan Murail, Jean-Claude Risset, and Stephen MacAdams at the Institut de Recherche Coordination Acoustique et Musique (IRCAM), and composition and orchestration with Gerard Grisey at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris. Professor Rose has taught at the Internationales Ferienkurse Fur Neue Musik in Darmstadt, the Chopin Academy in Warsaw, Poland, IRCAM in Paris and the Conservatoire in Paris.

Dr. Rose's music has been performed in cities throughout Europe, Australia, North and South America. He was an award winner in the 3rd International Composers Competition "Kazimierz Serocki" in Poland, 1990, and in the SDE/PRO Canada Composers Competition in 1986, 1987, and 1988. He has many recent compositions and is doing work on the development of a computerized orchestration aid and in non-western music is studying the concept of time in Japanese, African, Indian, and Balinese music.

In the Conservatory, Dr. Rose teaches all areas of music theory, orchestration, counterpoint, composition, and in composition seminar teaches rhythmic practices in 20th Century music, composition techniques in non-western music, and pitch organization in 20th century music. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda and is an associate composer to the Canadian Music Centre.
