Patricia Shands

Professor of Clarinet

Patricia Shands is Professor of clarinet and has been at the University of the Pacific since 1995. She holds the B.M. from the Peabody Conservatory of Music, the M.M. from the University of Southern California, and the D.M.A. from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Her major teachers include David Shifrin, Mitchel Lurie, David Peck, and Sidney Forrest.  Among the places she has taught are Dartmouth College, Concord Community Music School, and Rice University.

Dr. Shands has performed with the Houston Symphony, Portland Symphony Orchestra, Festival Ballet of Rhode Island, Handel Society Orchestra, Festival dei due Mondi Orchestra, Vermont Symphony, Colorado Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the Orquesta Filarmonic de Bogota. Her chamber music experience includes performance affiliations with the Block Ensemble, Musicians from Wall Street, Festival Institute at Round Top, Festival dei due Mondi, Holy Cross Chamber Players, The Banff Centre, as well as collaborations with the Concord String Quartet, Colorado String Quartet, and many others. Currently, she performs with the Pacific Arts Woodwind Quintet, MusicNow!, American Sinfonietta, Sacramento Philharmonic, and the Bear Valley Music Festival. She has been a soloist with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, Dartmouth Orchestra, Colorado Philharmonic, and has appeared on many recordings.

At Pacific, Dr. Shands teaches clarinet and chamber music, and serves as director of the chamber music program.  She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda and is faculty advisor for Mu Phi Epsilon.
