University of the Pacific

Non-thesis Option

  1. Students must complete a minimum of 30 units.
  2. Students who choose the Non-thesis Option may choose to do directed experiential learning, a project, or they may satisfy the entire unit requirement through coursework.

    1. Directed Experiential Learning: Pacific will assist students in securing engineering or computer science employment or a paid internship at a graduate engineer level. Students will work with the Co-op Director, their faculty advisor, and their worksite supervisor to develop a list of expected professional and technical learning objectives, with the experience culminating in the preparation of a report which documents the fulfillment of these objectives.
    2. Project: Students will need to be employed in an engineering or computer science capacity. They will come up with a special project in conjunction with their worksite supervisor and their faculty advisor. Upon completion of the project, the students will submit a comprehensive report outlining the project and documenting its completion. The success of the project will be judged by the worksite supervisor and the faculty advisor.
    3. Coursework: Students electing to satisfy the entire degree through courses will identify a somewhat stronger concentration goal, taking a minimum of one additional course from their concentration courses.
