Research Interest:
As a professor who is also a practicing physical therapist, I recognize the importance of high quality scientific studies and the patient's perspective to inform clinical judgments that result in the best possible care for patients. My research interest involves finding the best ways to measure processes underlying neuromusculoskeletal function and to promote optimal neuromusculoskeletal health. Specifically, I study the effects of manual therapy on the nervous system, how manual therapy and exercise affect clinical outcomes in patients with acute and overuse injuries, and how a patient's perception of their own and their health care providers' capabilities may influence treatment outcomes.
Professional Associations:
American Physical Therapy Association (APTA; Orthopaedic Section Member: 1999-present)
California Physical Therapy Association (1999-present)
Courses taught in the School of Pharmacy:
PTHR 313: Clinical Kinesiology I. This lecture/discussion based course introduces students to the basic principles of kinesiology and biomechanics and emphasizes the integration of basic science knowledge from multiple disciplines into an applied clinical approach to the study of human movement. The emphasis of study during this course is on normal and pathological movement of the lower extremity.
PTHR 316: Physical Therapy Examination and Evaluation. Discussion of basic examination techniques employed in the practice of physical therapy. Included are history taking, vital signs, inspection, palpation, range of motion measurement, manual muscle testing, sensory testing, selected special tests and other functional tests.
PTHR 326: Therapeutic Exercise: Basic Theory and Application. This course provides the theories and principles of therapeutic exercise. Included are the physiologic basis, procedures and techniques for strengthening and power-building exercises, stretching exercises, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). Supplemental lectures will include topics of aquatic exercise, pelvic floor strengthening, and preliminary lecture in Orthopedics (historical perspective, fractures, total joint replacements).
