June 1
McGeorge Professor Larry Levine had a large, section-front op-ed in Sunday's Sacramento Bee Forum section on the Gay Marriage debate.
MSNBC, Reuters of India and PropertyTalk.com, an online information service for Realtors, ran the story about how some home sellers are being discouraged from listing their homes due to the troubled real estate market in the nation. Eberhardt Professor John Knight was quoted in that story.
The Jazz Review, a monthly national jazz newsletter, had a round-up story on the Brubeck Festival in April. The story mentioned that Dave Brubeck attended Pacific and that the festival is put on by the University.
The Honolulu Advertiser had a story that said Lahainaluna senior Jack Pope is the winner of the inaugural Duke Kahanamoku Ambassador of Aloha Scholarship. The $10,000 scholarship is given by the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation. Pope will attend Pacific in the fall, the story says.
The Modesto Bee had a story that said CSU Stanislaus Golf Coach Jim Hanny has retired. The story mentioned that he was previously inducted into Pacific’s Hall of Fame.
The Sacramento Bee had an obituary on Pacific alumna Patricia Goodman. She was 61. She died of cancer.
The New York Times had a marriage announcement for Lindsey Putnam Dickinson and Ernest Cornish Baynard IV. Both are well-known political lobbyists and aides in Washington D.C. Baynard is a McGeorge alumnus, the announcement says.
The Redding Record Searchlight had a roundup of the candidates running for judge. Among them is McGeorge alumnus Eric Heryford.
The Modesto Bee had a profile on Pacific Conservatory student Kyle Wong. It included a large color photo of Wong with his stand-up bass.
June 2
Sou Fun (Taiwan), KOTA News (South Dakota) and Infomercados (Spain) ran a story listing the different schools and institutions represented at the first ever International Association of Law Schools meeting. McGeorge School of Law was mentioned.
The Glendale News Press (Los Angeles Area) had a story about where the champion high school volleyball players are headed for college. It said that MVP Dylan Walker will attend Pacific in the fall.
June 3
The Record had an editorial congratulating Dave Brubeck for being inducted into the California Hall of Fame. The editorial mentioned that he is a graduate of Pacific.
The Record had a brief that said the NCAA has selected Derrick Magee, the assistant director of athletics for finance and internal affairs at Pacific, to participate in its 2008-09 Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority males and females.
KFSN ABC (Fresno TV) had a story about the anti-gay marriage proposition getting enough signatures to be placed on the November ballot. McGeorge professor Lawrence Levine was quoted in the story.
June 4
The Record had a story about Tuesday’s election and the runoff it created in the Stockton mayor’s race. Jacoby Center director Bob Benedetti was quoted in the story.
The Sacramento Bee had a feature obituary on Pacific graduate Delbert J. Alberti. He was 68. He won many awards for teaching over the years, the story said.
The Los Angeles Times had a story that said the proposed cuts to MediCal will cut deeply into dental programs that treat disabled people. Dr. Paul Glassman, co-director of the Pacific Center for Special Care at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco, was quoted in the story.
VoicesNews (an online newspaper in Conneticut) had a story that said local high school field hockey champion Courtney Weaving will play at Pacific in the fall. She will major in accounting.
The Seattle Times had a news obit for well-known opera and theater director Greg Paul Morales. Morales graduated from Pacific. He was 51.
KCRA had a story about a new Web site that allows college students to trade used text books online. The story featured Pacific student Adam Koppel and included buy-back statistics from the Pacific and UC Davis book stores.
NavySports.com ran a press release about Adam Kennedy being named the new swimming coach at Pacific. Kennedy previously was assistant coach to the Navy’s men’s team.
June 5
The Record had a follow-up story on the San Joaquin Angels, a group of investors who put money into local, small startup businesses in the Stockton area. Plovnick, CEO of the angels group as well as director of economic development at Pacific, was quoted in the story.
The Visalia Times-Delta has a story that said Dugoni graduate Dr. John Sullivan has been elected to a third term on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
The Sacramento Bee had a story that said Gayle Erbe-Hamlin, El Dorado County public health director, has been named interim chief administrative officer of the county. The story said she’s a graduate of Pacific.
The Record had a story about the San Joaquin Film Festival and said a movie about the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror in Cambodia will be shown at Pacific on Sunday. The story said the film-maker and one of the survivors of Cambodia will both be on hand to talk about the film and take questions.
The Record had news-obits on Pacific graduate and well-known opera and theater director Greg Paul Morales.
The Lodi News-Sentinel and the Record had a news-obit on Pacific graduate Delbert Alberti. He served as the superintendent to Lodi’s schools at one point in his career.
Yahoo! News ran a story about the latest California Supreme Court ruling that has given the green light for same-sex couples to start getting married later this month. Leslie Gielow Jacobs, a constitutional law professor at McGeorge, was quoted in the story.
Metroactive (a weekly entertainment magazine in the Silicon Valley) had a story about the many jazz camps for young jazz musicians that are available. Pacific’s Brubeck Institute Jazz Camp was mentioned.
PR-Inside.com ran a press release that said McGeorge graduate Douglas White has earned the U. S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Professional Accreditation. He is the first attorney in the United States to receive a LEED Professional Accreditation.
The Lodi News-Sentinel said Benerd graduate Becky Jauregui earned the Arthur Marmaduke High School Counselor Award, a statewide award from the California Student Aid Commission.
The Seattle Post Intelligencer had a news-obit on Pacific graduate Meredith Getches. She was 63. She was Seattle’s first female hearing examiner and often settled disputes between developers and residents.
June 6
McGeorge Professor Michael Vitello was interviewed on Capital Public Radio about the upcoming civil suit filed by Laci Peterson’s mother against Scott Peterson.
The Sioux City Journal had a news obit on Thomas J. Long graduate Dr. Angie Post. She was 34.
The Sacramento Bee had an obit on Pacific graduate Patricia Fay Goodman. She was 61.
The Record had a story about the start of the San Joaquin Film Festival. Pacific was listed as one of the venues for films this weekend.
The Record had a short story about a purse snatcher who was arrested after being tracked down by Pacific’s police department in a nearby park.

FOX News in Washington D.C. posted a lengthy online news story about the story behind Indiana Jones. The story mentioned that Jones’ classroom building is actually the Faye Spanos Concert Hall at Pacific. It mentioned the exterior shots of the Spanos Hall can be seen in the first and the latest Indiana Jones films.
The Record had a story about local high school graduate Norbeto Sorto who came to the United States with his migrant farmworker family and has managed to graduate near the top of his class. The story mentioned that while he lived in Stockton, he volunteered at Pacific as a tutor for other area school children.
The Raleigh News and Observer had a story of a woman who is on trail for extreme child abuse and homicide against her youngest son, but her husband was never charged since there was no evidence indicating he was aware of his wife’s antics. The story questioned how much he actually knew about what was going on. McGeorge professor John Myers was quoted in the story saying “Doing nothing is doing something.”
The College of St. Benedict posted a news story about an upcoming undergraduate research conference that the school will host. Lydia Fox, chair of the department of geosciences at Pacific, was quoted in the story.
The Fresno Bee had a story about a settlement the city reached with homeless residents over the destruction of personal property and the controversy that is causing. McGeorge professor Brian Landsberg was quoted in the story.
The Record had a news obit on Pacific graduate Francis Saunder. He was 77.
CBS 13 ran a story that said Stockton has the highest average gas prices in the nation. Jeff Michael, director of the Business Forecasting Center, was interviewed for the story.

Inside Higher Education had a brief that said a report of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices summer activities reveals that some spend the time guest lecturing at Universities while others don’t visit any colleges. It said the top paying University is the Pacific McGeorge School of Law, which pays justice Anthony Kennedy $25,000 to teach a summer course. The TaxProf Blog ran the same story.
The Modesto Bee put a direct link on its Web site to a University-produced podcast of Ken Albala discussing the recent national tomato scare.
The Salem News had a story about the newspaper carriers who had earned college scholarships this year. One of the carriers, Jacob Davis Beverly, said he hopes to attend University of the Pacific.
The Metropolitan News Enterprise (Los Angeles Area) had a story that said judge Steven Van Sicklen will step down from his current post in order to accept a seat on the Torrance Superior Court. Van Sicklen is a McGeorge graduate, the story says.

The Ludington News (Michigan) had an obituary for Dr. Edward Tava (Ed.d). He was a Pacific graduate. He was 66.
The Appeal Democrat had a story about where the championship member of the local high school basketball team will attend college in the fall. One of the players, Royal Edwards, will attend Pacific, the story says.
The Fresno Bee had a follow-up story to a local controversy where a judge has ordered the mayor of Fresno to explain criticisms he expressed over a lawsuit the city lost to a group of homeless people. McGeorge professor John Sims was quoted in the story.
Rush Limbaugh mentioned Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael on his radio program and cited a study Michael did that showed that the current language in the Endangered Species Act can create incentives for landowners to destroy habitat.

The San Diego Tribune ran an editorial written by Pacific professor Gene Bigler today. The article says that Congress has not acted appropriately on strengthening Latin American relations. The Tribune has a daily circulation of about 300,000.
The Olympian (Washington State) had a story about what some recent high school graduates plan to do now that they are out of high school. One of the students said she plans to attend Pacific in the fall.
The Record had an obituary on former Pacific employee Dee Light McQuerrey, who was instrumental in creating the Conservatory’s Micro Rehearsal program. She was 85.
The San Diego Tribune had a feature story on California Supreme Court Justice Ronald George. McGeorge Professor John Sims was quoted in the story.
The Riverside Press Enterprise had a story about high school valedictorian Deanna Dickinson. The story said Dickinson will attend Pacific in the fall and study microbiology.

The San Jose Mercury News had a sports column that urged the Pacific 10 Conference to seriously consider Pacific Vice President Ted Leland for the position of Commissioner. The column says that Leland is “next in line” to become president of Pacific, but that the Conference should seriously try and steal Leland away from Pacific to run their organization.
The Garden Island in Hawaii had a story about local city council candidate, KipuKai “Leslie” Kuali‘i. Kuali’i is a Pacific graduate, the story says.

The San Bernardino Sun had a story that said Pacific graduate Sakeena Yacoobi received an honorary doctorate from Loma Linda University this weekend.
Minnesota Public Radio had a story about local budding jazz stars. It interviewed Brubeck Institute Fellow Javier Santiago, a first year student at Pacific’s Brubeck Institute.
Record columnist Michael Fitzgerald had a story about a popular blog that’s written by a Stockton-area pharmacist called “The Angry Pharmacist.” The author’s identity is kept secret but is identified as a Pacific graduate.
The Record had a story about how victims of last-weeks Stockton firestorm are coping. In it, Pacific student and fire victim Jasmine Lloyd is interviewed.
The Buffalo News and the Central Utah Daily Herald both had a story that said Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s class that he teaches at McGeorge every summer, “Fundamental Rights in Europe and the United States,” is clearly reflected in his recent opinion that terror suspects held at Guantanamo Bay had the same access to the courts as any American citizen.

The Chico Enterprise Record had a story about a group of local residents who recall what life was like during WWII and the Korean War. One of those interviewed was Pacific graduate Dorothy Reeve who recalled hearing about the bombing of Pearl Harbor while she was in a class on Pacific’s Stockton Campus.
The Washington Post hosted an online chat with readers to discuss the same-sex marriage issues in California. McGeorge Professor Lawrence Levine participated in that discussion as a featured guest.
CBS College Sports had a story about the men’s college volleyball players who were voted to the All-Academic Volleyball team this summer. The story listed seven members of Pacific’s men’s volleyball team.

Capital Public Radio had a story about the first same-sex marriages being held in California. McGeorge Professor Lawrence Levine was quoted in the story.
The Sacramento Bee had a feature story on McGeorge student Alice Thomas who graduates next year. Thomas is 78, has survived cancer and recently suffered the death of her partner, the story says.
The Tri-Valley Herald had a news-obit on Dugoni graduate William Ernest Dugoni. He was 76. He’s the brother of Dugoni Dean Emeritus Arthur Dugoni.

Dr. Ken Albala was quoted in USA Today in a lengthy story about the recent tomato scare. Albala had several quotes in the story, explaining how a manufacturing error at one plant can quickly cause a nation-wide health epidemic.
The Merced Sun-Star had a story about Pacific employee Kathy Hunter and her partner Polly Bernardo getting a marriage license on Tuesday – the first same-sex couple to do so in that county. The story mentioned that their wedding ceremony will be held on Pacific’s campus next week.
La Voz Online had a feature story about Pacific graduate Matt Trosper. He works as the athletics advisor at De Anza College and helps athletes transfer to four-year institutions while keeping within NCAA guidelines.
The Tri-City Herald (Columbia, Washington) had a story that said Pacific graduate Lou Gates is the new superintendent of the Methow Valley School District.
KXTV (ABC Sacramento) ran a story about the recent same-sex marriages that are taking place in California. McGeorge Professor Larry Levine was interviewed for the story.
The Tracy Press had a story about a visit by the Chinese National Women’s Softball Team, which is touring the United States to promote the Olympics. Pacific student Kellee Wilson was quoted in the story.
The Reno Gazette Journal had a brief that said Pacific graduate Mindy Cannady was hired as the new marketing manager for local firm PK Electric.
WPSD TV (NBC, San Diego) ran a story that said the NCAA has penalized Southeast Missouri State University for major and secondary violations in its women's and men’s basketball program. The story mentioned that Ted Leland, Pacific’s vice president for advancement, is on the NCAA Committee for Infractions.
GolfWeek Magazine had a story that said Pacific student and golfer T.J. Bordeaux did very well in the opening round of the British Amateur Championship golf tournament.
The Honolulu Advertiser had a story about local high school students who received large scholarships. Among them was champion wrestler Caitlin Mizoshiri, who will attend Pacific in the fall.

The Modesto Bee had an obituary on Pacific graduate Merrill Russel. He was 90.
The Record had a story about the annual Juneteenth Celebration. Pacific graduate Michael Merriweather was quoted in the story.
The Fresno Bee had a story about where the championship members of the local high school basketball team will go for college. It said that women’s team member Brionna Warren will attend Pacific.
The Record had a story about incoming Freshman basketball player Jennifer Jorgensen, whose family lives in the heart of the parts of Iowa that have been devastated by floods and tornadoes in the past month. The story mentioned that Jorgensen was recently named “Miss Iowa,” was an all-state selection in basketball, softball, volleyball and track and field, and won a state championship in the long jump and finished third in the 100 and 200 meters on May 17.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on Kathy Schick who teaches biology part time at Pacific.
The Record had a feature story on the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences partnership with Health Plan of San Joaquin to run a residency program that trains recent graduates in the work of managed care pharmacy practice. That program was recently recognized nationally with a three-year accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. It is the only program of its kind in California offered by a Local Initiative Health Plan

The Record had a story about an incident that happened 10 years ago when NBA star and Pacific graduate Michael Olowokandi may or may not have been asked if he was willing to make a donation to his alma mater and he got very upset over it. Ted Leland, vice president for advancement, was quoted in the story.
The Marin Independent Journal had a short story about how high school baseball champion Steve Detwiler was inspired to do better in baseball because of incoming Pacific freshman Reed Kamler. Detwiler said he hopes to attend Pacific.
Yahoo! news had a story about the housing slump and how it is now reaching into its second year in the Stockton area. Eberhardt Professor John Knight was quoted in the story.
Both ABS/CBN News and Boxing Scene magazine had a story that said McGeorge graduate Vic Drakulich will referee the Manny Pacquiao - David Diaz boxing match at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday.
The Record had a feature story on the "Leaving Your Legacy" writing class that will be offered this summer by Pacific’s Center for Professional and Continuing Education.

Medical News today had a story about a G8 Summit presentation in Japan next month on global challenges. The story said Pacific Professor Kojo Yelpaala will be one of the panelists for the presentation.
The Tehama County Red Bluff Daily News had an obituary on Pacific graduate. He was 90.
Sacramento Magazine reviewed the restaurant “Boulevard Bistro.” Tim Naccarato, assistant dean at Pacific McGeorge School of Law, was quoted in the review as a customer at the restaurant.
KFBK Radio (Sacramento) and its sister station KFIV (Modesto) both ran a story about the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said the death penalty can only be applied in cases where the victim died. That ruling was written by Justice Anthony Kennedy. The story mentioned that Kennedy is a professor at McGeorge.
The Sacramento Bee had a news obit on Pacific graduate Mary Taylor (Underwood) Pickens. She was 72.

Jeff Michael, the director of Eberhardt’s Business Forecasting Center, was interviewed on Capital Public Radio (NPR, Sacramento) about the center’s latest report that says California will start to recover from the recession and housing prices will stabilize by the end of next year. The Sacramento Bee had a similar story and quoted Michael in it.
The Sacramento Bee had an obituary on Bonnie Burns Busick, graduate of Pacific and the daughter of Pacific president Robert Burns. She was 66.
The San Jose Mercury News had a story about an incident that happened 10 years ago between the former director of Pacific’s Advancement department and Pacific graduate and NBA star Michael Olowokandi. The only source in the Mercury News’ Story was a story that ran in the Record earlier this week.
Dugoni graduate Dr. Steve McConnell was named the best “cosmetic dentist” in KRON TV’s annual “Best of the Bay” survey. His association with Pacific was mentioned in the story.
The Sacramento Bee had a brief that said Rick Opich, a 25-year veteran of the Placer County District Attorney's Office was named as the office's Prosecutor of the Year for 2007. Opich is a McGeorge graduate, the brief says.
The Record had a story about a water study that suggest ways to improve the oxygen quality of the Delta to improve the survival rate of fish. The story mentioned that professors at University of the Pacific helped conduct the study.
The Rossmoor News said that Dr. Tapan Munroe will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Walnut Creek Republican Club. Munroe was a visiting professor at Pacific, the story says.
The Central Valley Business Times had a story about the latest Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Report, which says that California is clearly in a recession but that Stockton and the Bay Area probably will recover from it first. A podcast of Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was posted along with the story for download.
The Tri-Valley Herald had a story that said Tracy resident Molly Beckler began a fellowship with Southwest Water Company in Mountain House through the Paul M. Sensibaugh Engineering Endowed Scholarship, awarded by the University of the Pacific. She is the first recipient of the new, $2,000 scholarship that allows for students to work in engineering for a local company during their breaks from school, the story says.

The Record had a story that rounds up activities at the Haggin Museum in the next few weeks. The story said that Biology Professor Greg Anderson will speak abut Audubon's animals and their legacy in natural history on Aug. 7.
The Sutter Appeal Democrat had a news-obit on former county clerk and McGeorge graduate Joan Bechtel. She was 69.
The Washington Times had a feature story analyzing the voting record of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. The story mentioned that he teaches at McGeorge during the summers.
The Sacramento Bee had a news obit on Bonnie Burns Busick, a Pacific graduate and daughter of former president Robert Burns. This story is different from the regular obituary that the paper ran Thursday.
The Record had a story on the latest economic forecast issued by the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center. Director Jeff Michael was quoted in the story.

The Sacramento Bee had a story about whether Marco Topete, the man on trail in the murder of a Yolo County Court Baliff, can get a fair trial in that county. McGeorge professor John Myers was quoted in the story.
