Aug. 1
The Lahontan Valley News (Nevada) had a story about a round-table discussion between the three candidates running for an open judge’s seat there. One of the candidates is McGeorge graduate Jack Kennedy.
The Record had a brief that said Pacific student Alex Grieb qualified for the U.S. Amateur golf tournament. He will be competing against another student, his room mate T.J. Bordeaux.
Aug. 2
The Fresno Bee had a story analyzing the sentencing record of the federal judges in the Fresno District Court. The story concluded they are the most conservative judges in the state and tend to issue the strictest sentences. McGeorge Professor John Sims was quoted in the story. The Santa Barbara News ran the same story.
The Record had a news obit on local opera singer Kathe Underwood. She was 99. She was married to former Pacific opera professor Lucas Underwood.
The Folsom Telegraph had a guest column on a “modern marriage” between two people who live in separate countries. Family and friends watched the ceremony in a number of different countries as it was streamed over the Internet. The groom is Pacific student Joseph Patterson, the column says. His new wife Sharon Titong has a masters in accounting and has expressed a desire to work for Pacific.
Univision (Spanish-language television) and Channel 10 news (ABC, Sacramento) had a story about the Black Brown Summit being held at Pacific.
The Record ran a large photo of the Folk Dance Camp being held on Pacific’s Stockton campus during the past week.
Aug. 3
The Record had a story about the Black-Brown Summit held Friday and Saturday at Pacific. The story was a round-up on all the speakers and themes at the event.
The Fresno Bee had a story where former Fresno residents talked about what they missed about the Southern San Joaquin Valley City. Pacific graduate Melanie Vartabedian was quoted in the story. She’s now an attorney in Salt Lake City.
The Pharmacy Times ran a guest editorial written by Pacific PharmD candidate Aaron Nelson. The editorial focused on ways to prevent medication errors in the modern health system.
The Riverside Press Enterprise (Los Angeles Area) had a brief that said local California Assemblyman Anthony Adams, R-Hesperia, has spent most of his summer in classes at McGeorge School of Law, preparing to take the California Bar Exam.
The Hagerstown Herald-Mail (Maryland) said that Ryan M. Tigrett recently graduated from the University of Pacific's Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco. He has entered the residency program at the Denver Health Medical Center in Denver, Colo.
Aug. 4
The Record had a brief that said Pace Supply Corp., an employee-owned wholesaler of plumbing, HVAC and waterworks supplies in Stockton, hired Pacific graduate Juan Flores as a sales representative.
The ABA Journal printed an article written by Pacific McGeorge Professor Marjorie Florestal. The feature was a prize winner in an essay contest regarding the importance of the legal profession.
The Sacramento Bee had a story about the many connections between the Sacramento area and China. McGeorge graduate John Yung, a partner in the Sacramento office of Bullivant Houser Bailey, was quoted in the story. His firm recently formed an alliance with Beijing-based law firm Lehman, Lee & Xu.
Aug. 5
The Record had a brief that said Pacific was named one of the best undergraduate schools in the nation by the Princeton Review.
The Record had an article about the two local residents who will compete in the Olympics this year. One of them is Pacific graduate Jennifer Joines.
Aug. 6
The San Jose Mercury News had a story about Jennifer Joines, who will compete in the Olympics next week. The story mentioned that Joines and her brother John are both Pacific graduates.
The Record had an editorial that said this weekend’s Black-Brown Summit, held at Pacific, is a good first step toward looking for solutions to real-world problems in the Latino and Black communities.
The Santa Rosa Press Democrat had a feature story on local teen-ager Ryan Neitzel, who was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was in elementary school. Neitzel will attend Pacific in the Fall, the story says.
The Law Journal Legal Pad (a blog hosted by the printed National Law Journal) had a story that said more than a dozen high-profile attorneys and law professors have filed a joint brief in the case of a Missouri woman who used a false identity on a MySpace page to bully a teenager who ultimately committed suicide. The brief says that the law being used to prosecute the women is being mis-interpreted and could have severe legal ramifications if the interpretation is allowed to stand. The law being used is the “Computer Fraud and Abuse Act,” intended to prevent hacking and manipulation of data for monetary means or sabotage. One of the professors who signed the brief is McGeorge Professor Brian G. Slocum, the story says.
The Lawyers Weekly, the top law journal for attorneys in Canada, ran a guest column from McGeorge Professor Paul Paton. The column focused on how different countries have tried to allow attorneys to self-regulate their behavior and the problems that has caused.
The Daily Camera (Boulder, Colorado) had a feature story on part-time Professor Roger Storey. Storey is one of the seven candidates being considered to serve as the city manager of Boulder.
The Tri-Valley Herald had a brief that said Tracy mayor candidate Celeste Garamendi is hosting a meet-and-greet event at the home of Arturo Ocampo, an assistant provost at Pacific.
The record had a news-obit on Pacific graduate and local “institution” Emil George "Seif" Seifert. He was 90.
Aug. 8
Capital Public Radio interviewed Pacific graduate Ryan Brown, the assistant coach to the U.S. Men’s Water Polo Team currently competing in the Beijing Olympics. Brown’s association with Pacific was mentioned at the start of the story.
Both The Record and the Modesto Bee had briefs about an interview with Professor Keith Hatschek and Dr. Stephen Anderson that will be broadcast on XM Radio later this afternoon. Both men discussed Dave Brubeck and the 50th anniversary of his cultural diplomacy tour.
The Record and the Sacramento Bee had stories that said the Sacramento Kings will play a game at University of the Pacific in the Fall.
The Sacramento Bee had a story about a conflict between the company SureWest and a Web site set up to criticize its business practices. McGeorge Professor Daniel Ballard was quoted in the story.
Channel 19 (Univision, Sacramento) had a story about the spike in weddings held on Friday because the number eight is considered a lucky number (the date was 8-8-8). The story included footage from a wedding held Friday afternoon at Morris Chapel.
Aug. 9
The Record had an interview and story with Pacific graduate Jennifer Joines about her participation in the Olympics this month.
Aug. 10
The Record had an editorial praising the collaboration between Pacific and the Sacramento Kings that will bring a professional NBA game to Pacific this fall.
Mike Klocke wrote a guest column in The Record about the many times he has covered the Olympics over the past two decades. One of his most memorable interviews was with Olympic baseball player Ed Sprague, the column says. The column mentioned the Sprague now works at Pacific.
Aug. 11
The Record had a brief that said Pacific graduate Laurence Held was promoted to vice president of commercial loans at the Stockton branch of Pacific State Bank.
Mary Beth Marklein’s education column in USA Today mentioned Pacific’s recommendation of “The Essential Muir” to incoming Freshmen who are going on the MOVE trip next week.
Natural News.com ran a guest-column from Dugoni graduate Alex Panahpour. The article was about the importance about dental care and how recent studies are showing interesting correlations between gum disease and heart disease.
The Sacramento Bee ran a story that says McGeorge graduate Jonathan G. Stein was named one of the top attorneys in the United States by Business Week Magazine.
The Monterey County Herald had a story that says Cal State Monterey Bay has appointed Pacific graduate Fred Edmonson to the position of interim dean of students.
Aug. 12
The Record had a story about how gas prices have fallen slightly, but because the price is now pennies below $4, most folks think they are getting a deal. Eberhardt professor Ron Hoverstad was quoted in the story.
The Record had a column that summarized the Olympic games so far. It mentioned that Pacific graduate Jennifer Joines is playing on the women’s volleyball team, which is still on track for an Olympic medal.
Aug. 13
The Nevada Appeal ran a story that says McGeorge graduate Noel Waters will be in a run-off election for a Carson City judge’s seat in November.
The Record had a story that said the pharmaceutical company CVS will buy the Long’s Drug Store Chain. The story mentioned that the Long family are supporters of the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Dean Phil Oppenheimer and Assistant Dean Nancy DeGuire were both quoted in the story.
The Record had a feature story on Pacific graduate and Olympian Jayne McHugh.
After losing the second set during a game against Venezuela, the coach of the U.S. Women's Volleyball Team put Pacific graduate Jennifer Joines into the game for the third set. During the second half of the set, Joines made so many blocks and scored so many points, the NBC commentators repeatedly talked about her and said that she was the reason team USA was coming back strong. During those discussions, Joines' association with Pacific was mentioned at the start of the fourth set and at the end of the fourth set, Joines was credited with turning the team’s performance around. Team USA went on to win the third and fourth sets against Venezuela, keeping the team in contention for a medal. Sets three and four, which included Joines, can be viewed online.
Good Morning Sacramento had an interview with Pacific student Niquel Garcia. For the second year in a row, Garcia won the national skating championships in her class and is headed to the world championships later this year. Garcia demonstrated her skating live during the show and tried to help the news anchor with some basic skating skills.
McGeorge Professor Lawrence Levine was interviewed live on KGO radio Wednesday night. He discussed the marriage equality proposition that will be on the ballot in November.
McGeorge Professor Clark Kelso, appointed by a judge earlier this year to reform the health-care system in California’s prisons, held a press conference Wednesday. Afterward, he was interviewed by numerous media outlets, including KPCC (Los Angeles Public Radio), Fox Radio and Reuters news service. His association with Pacific was mentioned on some of the news casts.
Aug. 14
Economics professor Michelle Amaral was interviewed on Capital Public Radio about the health crisis facing retired Americans.
The Record had a story about a local inventor who has come up with the “pop stick,” a device that makes it easier to roast hot dogs. Eberhardt professor Cynthia Wagner Weick was quoted in the story.
The Contra Costa Times ran an obituary on Pacific graduate Greg Morris Johnson. He died from cancer.
The Record had a story on Clark Kelso’s press conference held Wednesday.
The Fresno Bee had a new-obituary on former Pacific student and well-known musician Jerry Venturi. He was 67.
Aug. 15
The Record had a feature story about the Brubeck Institute’s Summer Jazz Colony. Several students and guest artist Joe Gilman were interviewed.
The Record had a story that says investors are now trying to buy as many foreclosed homes as possible before the market improves. Some are buying whole blocks at a time. Eberhardt professor Mark Plovnick was quoted in the story.
The Walla-Walla Union Bulletin (Washington) had a feature story on school superintendent Lou Gates. Gates is a Pacific graduate, the story says.
The Honolulu Advertiser has a story that says the Kailua Volleyball Club is getting a lot of national attention this year because a number of its members have gone on to win international competitions. One of the members of the club, Brian Zodrow, is a Pacific graduate.
The Edmond Beacon (Washington) had a story that sums up the local candidates running for a judge’s seat. One of the candidates is McGeorge graduate George Appel.
Jeff Michael, the director of the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center, was interviewed on Fox 40 News (Sacramento) about the sudden increase in unemployment rates in Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties. The Record had a story on the same subject. Michael was quoted in that story too.
Real Estate Business Online ran a brief about the upcoming opening of the new University Center on the Stockton Campus.
The Modesto Bee ran a brief about the Oct. 15 Sacramento Kings game that will be played on the Stockton Campus.
Aug. 16
The Record had a story that says Peter Johnson, director of University of the Pacific's Westgate Center for Management Development and the Institute for Family Business, is running for re-election to the Lodi unified School District Board. The Sacramento Bee ran a similar story.
The Sacramento Bee had a story about the unemployment rates, analyzing the latest report and concluding that more than 10,000 jobs have been eliminated in the state. Jeff Michael, director of the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center, was quoted in the story. The Modesto Bee and The Record ran their own stories. Both quoted Michael.
The LA Monitor said Pacific graduate Kristen Peterson took women’s overall championship at the 34th annual Los Angeles Triathlon.
The Record had a brief reminding readers about the second Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony Concert, scheduled for the afternoon.
Aug. 17
DBusiness News had a brief that said the Community Bank of Arizona hired Pacific graduate Mark Hunton, as vice president, Commercial Loan Officer.
The Record had a story that speculates that Pacific’s Women’s Volleyball Team may make it to the NCAA championships this year, the first time they will reach the finals since 2004.
The Record had a feature story on Pacifican and two-time Olympian Brad Schumacher.
Aug. 18
The Record had a feature story on Pacific students T.J. Bordeaux and Alex Grieb, both who are competing in the United States Amateur Golf Tournament, that starts today in North Carolina.
The German edition of PR Inside.com had a feature story on Pacific international student Christian Kuhne, who is a tennis champion in Germany.
The Sacramento Bee had a story on the closing of a popular store named “The Bower Bird.” Jeff Michael, director of the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center, was quoted as saying that small businesses are often the first to be hit by economic slumps because they traditional have small profit margins.
The Record ran an Associated Press story about the success of the women’s volleyball team that’s competing in the Beijing Olympics. The story included a photo of Pacific graduate Jennifer Joines during Sunday’s game against Poland.
Aug. 19
Judicial Affairs Director Heather Dunn-Carlton was interviewed on Channel 10 news (ABC, Sacramento) about a proposal to lower the drinking age to 18. It aired on the 10 p.m. news.
The Appeal Democrat (Marysville) had a story that said two of the top local baseball athletes will play on Pacific’s team together this year. Ty Davis and Mike Walker both played together in high school in 2006.
The Modesto Bee had a profile on Pacific graduate and minor-league ball player Matt Berezay.
The Seattle Times had a brief that said Pacific graduate Gina Carbonatto will join the Washington softball staff as a coach for the 2008-09 season. The Snohomish County Herald (Washington) had a short story on the same subject.
The Record had a brief that said Pacific graduate Jennifer Joines, who is in Beijing playing on the U.S. Women’s Volleyball Team, beat Japan in the quarter finals and is still in contention for a gold medal.
The Record had a feature story on Pacific graduate Elaina Oden, who competed in the Olympics in 1992 and 1996.
Aug. 20
Channel 10 (ABC, Sacramento) interviewed Pacific employee Jason Velo about the green features of the new University Center. It aired at 5 p.m.
Sacramento Magazine had a list of the 100 most “influential people” in Sacramento. McGeorge Professor J. Clark Kelso was listed, as was McGeorge graduate Randy Paraguary.

The Chico Enterprise Record had a story that said Chico State’s championship basketball team is no more. It mentioned that coach Lynn Roberts left to work at Pacific last year.
The Record had a story about the newest inductees into the Mexican-American Hall of Fame. It mentioned Pacific graduate Nisla Fonseca is one of the inductees.
News 10 (ABC, Sacramento) had a story that said tickets for the upcoming Sacramento Kings game at Pacific have gone on sale.
The Central Valley Business Times ran Pacific’s press release on the opening of the new Biological Sciences Center.
The San Mateo Daily Journal had a story that said Pacific graduate Andy Hodzic will return to his home town (of San Mateo) and coach the water polo team at the local high school.
Aug. 22
The Record had a story that says Pacific is ranked, once again, as one of the best Universities in the nation by US News and World Report. Media Relations Manager Patrick Giblin was quoted in the story.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel had a story that says Pacific graduate Mark Fairchilds was inducted into the USTA Northern California Tennis Hall of Fame.
The Lodi News Sentinel has a story on a study issued by the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center that says the birth rate is considerably higher in San Joaquin County than it is in the rest of California and the nation as a whole. Jeff Michael, the director of the Center, was quoted in the story.

The Record had a story about the Pacific Women’s Soccer team victory over Sacramento State.
Aug. 24
The Modesto Bee had a story about the US Volleyball team’s loss to Brazil in the Beijing Olympics. Pacific graduate and team-member Jennifer Joines was quoted in the story. The U.S. team won the silver, the story said.
Record Editor Don Blount wrote a column about how his two daughters are headed back to school this week. One of them is a student at University of the Pacific, the column says.
The Sacramento Bee had an obituary on McGeorge graduate Tom Tatsuo Muraki, one of the first Japanese-Americans to graduate with a law degree from McGeorge and a decorated war hero of WWII. He was 82.
The Sacramento Bee had an obituary on Pacific graduate Glenn Kawahara. He was 60.

The Chronicle of Higher Education’s annual Almanac of significant donations mentioned the $100 million Powell donation to University of the Pacific.
The Record had a story about local residents who are headed to the Democratic National Convention this week. Pacific student Arthur Murrillo, was quoted in the story.
The Record had a story about the Pacific women’s soccer team loss to Stanford.
The Sacramento Bee had a feature story on the death of Pacific McGeorge graduate Tom Muraki, a decorated war veteran of WWII and the first Japanese-American to graduate from McGeorge.
The Gilroy Dispatch had a feature story on Pacific graduate Greg Grant. Grant is the new band director for Gilroy High School.
Aug. 26
The Wall Street Journal ran a front-page story about how some law schools are dropping off the U.S. News and World Report’s annual “Top 100 Law Schools” list because of changes made in the way they do calculations. McGeorge student John Powell was quoted in the story saying he chose Pacific McGeorge over a Bay Area school because McGeorge was still in the top 100 and the other school was not.
KCRA Channel 3 (NBC Sacramento) interviewed President Don DeRosa, Pacific employee Jason Velo and several students about the opening of the new University Center as well as the start of the school year.
The Record had a story about how the new University Center has opened and will be named in honor of President DeRosa and Karen DeRosa. University spokesman Patrick Giblin was quoted in the story. KFBK and KFIV (talk radio stations in Modesto and Sacramento) both had similar stories.
The Record had a brief about a career workshop that will be held at the Ripon Library next week. It said Pacific’s director of the Career Resource Center, John Carvana, will lead the workshop.
The Glendale News Press (Los Angeles Area) named incoming Pacific freshman Dylan Walker as one of their top local athletes of the year. Walker plays volleyball.
The Record had a feature story on Pacific graduate and current doctoral candidate Shawnterra Moore. Moore was named the interim principal at Stockton Unified's Institute of Business, Management and Law.
Aug. 27
The Record had a story that said the latest Census report says that the poverty rate in San Joaquin County is much higher than the rest of the nation. Sociology professor Roy Childs was quoted.
The Modesto Bee had a story about how some people are questioning the polling data the federal government is using to calculate average incomes in the annual “American Community Survey.” Sociology Professor Roy Childs was quoted saying that it looks like the poll has sampling errors.
The Palo Alto Daily News had a story that says Pacific graduate Bill Waggoner has been hired as the new football coach for Los Altos High School.
The Modesto Bee had a brief that said McGeorge graduate Brian Haddix has opened his own law firm in Stanislaus County.
The Record ran an Associated Press story about how some University’s are training students and staff to “fight back” against would-be shooters and terrorists by attacking them with backpacks and laptops. Pacific spokesman Patrick Giblin was quoted in the story saying that Pacific does not have a program like that but would look at it if there were interest from the campus community.
The Pacifica Tribune (San Mateo area) had a short story on artist Jude Pittman’s upcoming show. Pittman attended University of the Pacific, the story says.
Aug. 28
The Sacramento Bee ran a guest editorial stating all the reasons that private universities are better than public universities. University of the Pacific was featured in the column as a school that has unique programs that meet the needs of its students.
The Record had a story listing all the music events that have been scheduled in Stockton for the next 12 months. It included a complete list of upcoming Conservatory concerts.
The Record had a brief on the upcoming Reynolds Gallery show of Professor Emeritus Gil Dellinger.
For Construction Pros Magazine had an article that said Hazard Construction Company of San Diego has appointed Pacific graduate Doug Urbick as the company’s president.
Aug. 29
The Modesto Bee had a story on local high school volleyball champions Andrea Terpstra towers over Kirsten Duren. The story says that Terpstra has accepted a scholarship to attend Pacific next year.
The Modesto Bee had a brief on local students who earned scholarships from the California Grocers Association Education Foundation. One of those is Pacific student Michele Martin.
The Record had a feature story on the Pacific Women’s Volleyball Team.
The San Francisco Business Times had a short story about scholarships that were awarded by Delta Dental to dentistry students. One of the recipients was Dugoni student Nicklaus Morton.
The Santa Barbara News Press and the Sacramento Bee had a story that said a judge ruled that a defendant who is currently in the army can not wear his uniform in lieu of a suit during the trial. McGeorge School of Law professor Michael Vitiello was quoted in the story.
Aug. 30
The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on Rhino Customs, a shop that customizes golf carts. It mentioned that Pacific student Danielle Mondo is building a Web site for the business.
The Record had a story on several exhibition games the Men’s Basketball Team is playing in Canada this weekend.
