Oct. 1

The Modesto Bee had a story about how many banks are now getting record numbers of new customers in the past week. Those customers had just closed their Washington Mutual Bank accounts on news that the bank was in financial trouble. Jeff Michael, director of the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center, was quoted.

The Central Valley Business Times had a story about this week’s stock market drop and how it will effect small businesses. Business Professor John Knight was quoted.

The Record had a story about a local martial arts studio that is offering free martial arts lessons to veterans, claiming that practicing the defensive skills can lower post traumatic stress disorder. Scott Jensen, assistant professor of psychology, was quoted.

The Record had a story about the athletic department’s annual “Tiger in Tennies” program where young children are taught basic basketball skills.

The Sun Herald (Mississippi) ran the Modesto Bee story about advice to people about how to survive the current financial crisis. Professor John Knight was quoted in that story.

Vida en el Valle, a Spanish language newspaper in Central California, ran The Record’s article about Ismael Cortez, a Mexican immigrant who works as a warehouse laborer. In Mexico, he was a respected teacher with a college degree. The story mentioned several Pacific programs to reach out to the Latino community and encourage them to get an education. Lynn Beck, dean of the Benerd School of Education, also was quoted in the story.

The Monterey County Herald had a news obituary for attorney and McGeorge graduate James Bruce Eckerson. He was 65.

Oct. 2

The Record had a feature story on President Don DeRosa and Karen DeRosa. The story focused on their accomplishments at Pacific during the past 14 years as well as tonight’s dedication ceremony for the Don and Karen DeRosa University Center.

The Record had a feature story on Pacific soccer players Kristina Wavomba, Angelica Figueroa, Alex Topp and Laura Hogan. The story said the four – dubbed “the fab four” in the story – are so talented that Pacific has a good shot at the soccer championships this year. Coach Keith Coleman was quoted in the story.

Oct. 3

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story about local reaction to the vice presidential debates. Director of Forensics Marlin Bates was quoted in the story.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on Lodi Unified Trustee Peter Johnson. Johnson is a Pacific graduate, the story said.

Yahoo!News Canada had a story about how Shakespeare scholars believe that Shakespeare’s goal was to make sure all his plays were a hit, even if it meant dumbing down his plays or including messages he didn’t quite agree with. Pacific English professor Courtney Lehmann was quoted in the story.

The Record had a feature story on volleyball player Shannon Krug. The story said she chose Pacific after spending 24 hours on the campus.

Oct. 4

The Record had a feature story on musician Tom Castle who turned 100 this weekend. The story mentioned that Castle has collaborated with several famous musicians who attended Pacific, included Dave Brubeck and trumpet player Mike Vax.

The Record had a feature story about Pacific's branch of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia musical fraternity which visits area elementary schools to teach children about music.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story about how local churches are endorsing political candidates and telling their parishioners to vote for Proposition 8, the anti-gay marriage initiative. This year, some are saying those endorsements are in violation of the churches’ non-profit status. McGeorge Professor John Sims was quoted in the story.

The Sioux City Journal had a short story about an art show by three local artists. One of those artists is Pacific graduate Doug Genschmer.

The Record had a short story about how local high schools scrambled to find new locations for three football games that were originally scheduled to be played at Pacific. The story said Pacific officials canceled the use of its football field due to fear of rain.

The Record had a brief about International Conflict Resolution Day. Several people will speak at Pacific to mark the day.

The Record had a story about all the problems and issues San Joaquin County is facing for election day, including a huge number of absentee ballots that were returned as “Addressee Unknown” due to the foreclosure crisis. Professor Bob Benedetti was quoted in the story.

The Record had a brief about former Colombian President Cesar Gaviria’s speech at Pacific tonight.

The Record had a feature story about all the specialty schools and support organizations that have been established for children with learning disabilities. Benerd Professor Michael Elium was quoted in the story.

The Record had a brief that said the Pacific Women’s Soccer Team lost to Long Beach over the weekend.

The Modesto Bee had an article about how the trail of Columbus Allen (accused of killing a CHP officer) will be delayed again. The story quoted McGeorge Professors Michael Vitiello and Ruth Jones.

Univision ran an interview with former Colombian President Cesar Gaviria. The story mentioned that he was visiting Pacific and would speak there later that evening.

Oct. 7

The Record had a story about former Colombian President Cesar Gaviria’s speech at Pacific Monday evening. The story mentioned the launch of the Inter-American Initiative and the signing ceremony with UDUAL earlier in the day.

The San Francisco Chronicle had a story that said a judge has ordered California to make the first installment of an $8 billion plan to improve the health care system in the state’s prisons. McGeorge Professor J. Clark Kelos – the man appointed to oversee that health-care system – was quoted in the story.

The Central Valley Business Times had a story about the faculty/student exchange agreement Pacific signed with UDUAL on Monday.

The Daily Toreador (Texas Tech University) had a feature story on Pacific graduate Daniel Bowman Simon. Simon is currently touring the country, telling people about the benefits of organic farming.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel had a story about the championship high school volleyball team. The story mentioned that previous high school champion Elsa Stegemann played for Pacific after graduation.

The Record had a story about the Gender workshop that was held at Pacific on Monday.

Oct. 8

The Record had a brief that said Pacific would show the movie “The Accused” on Thursday as part of “Gender and the Law” week.

The North County Times (Marin County) had a story about the local high school field hockey team. The story mentioned the team goalie Ashlee Schlesier will attend Pacific next year.

EuroInvestor Magazine had a story about how Acenture (a global investment fund company) has established a scholarship fund to help Native Americans attend college. One of the scholarship recipients is Felicia Frizzell, who will attend Dugoni next year, the story says.

Oct. 9

The Record had a feature story on Athletic Director Lynn King. The story focused on how king is being inducted into the University of Northern Iowa’s Athletic Hall of Fame this weekend.

The Modesto Bee had a brief about Pacific signing an agreement with UDUAL to allow faculty and student exchanges.

The Record had an editorial endorsing Peter Johnson for the Lodi Unified School District Board of Directors. The editorial mentioned that Johnson is Peter Johnson is director of University of the Pacific's Westgate Center for Management Development and the Institute for Family Business.

ABC Channel 10 (Sacramento) interviewed Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael live on the 5 p.m. news about what is happening on Wall Street this week. Michael then logged online and chatted with viewers about their questions for 30 minutes after his interview ended.

The Orange County Register had a brief that said local high school athlete Kendall Rodriguez has earned a full scholarship to attend Pacific next year. The brief also said that Rodriguez recently earned the Girl Scouts Gold Award, equivalent to the Boy Scout Eagle Scout Badge.

The Central Valley Business Times had a short story that said Origami Foods has applied for a patent for its food processing processes. The story mentioned that the company received it’s first major exposure during a seminar held at Pacific last year.

Oct. 10

The Record had a story about public hearings being held by the FCC to transfer ownership of KUOP from Pacific to Capital Public Radio.

The Sacramento Bee had a story about what is happening on Wall Street this week. Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted.

Channel 10 (ABC Sacramento) had a story on the 11 p.m. news about the fourth annual cardboard regatta involving engineering students and their card board/duct tape boats.

The Modesto Bee had a brief about the upcoming speech at Pacific by Nobel Peace Prize Winner Rigoberta Menchu.

Oct. 11

The Record had a story about a controversy that has erupted in the local judge’s race. A sitting judge has endorsed one of two candidates for the open seat, but did it with a letter that was highly critical of the other candidate. Mary-Beth Moylan, a law professor at McGeorge, was quoted.

The Record had a story with photos about Friday evening’s fourth annual Cardboard Regatta.

The Tri-Valley Herald had a story about the state of the economy. Jeff Michael, director of the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center, was quoted.

The Record had a brief about the preseason Kings/Clippers game at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Spanos Center.

Oct. 12

Michael Fitzgerald’s column in The Record was about “trackers,” people paid by politicians to shadow their opponents all day long with a video camera, hoping to catch something embarrassing that can be posted on YouTube. Political Science Professor Brian Klunk was quoted in the story.

The Record had a story that said the women’s volleyball team beat UC Riverside in three straight games on Saturday.

Oct. 13

The New York Times ran a story about the history of E Clampus Vitus, a nearly 200-year-old club for California history fanatics who also like to drink. Pacific archivist Michael Wurtz was quoted in the story talking about how Pacific has helped preserve some of the earliest papers of the group for historical and research purposes. The Sacramento Bee had a story about how the proponents of parental-notification law are running ads saying that it will help in the fight against sexual predators, but that many critics are pointing out that the law doesn’t have anything to do with sexual predator laws. McGeorge professor Mary-Beth Moylan was quoted.

The Record had a brief about all the health-fairs that are being held by the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Science this month.

The Record had a story that said Pacific’s women’s soccer team beat UC Riverside during the weekend.

The Colombia Tribune (Missouri) ran the Modesto Bee story about advice on how to survive the financial turmoil. Eberhardt Professor John Knight was quoted in that story.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on Emily and Tim Howard, a socially and politically active couple who have several children. Tim Howard currently is earning a doctorates at Pacific, the story said.

The Cody Enterprise (Wyoming) had a feature story on Judge Steven Cranfill, a McGeorge graduate who was appointed to his current position two years ago and is now running for the seat for a full term.

The Californian (Central Coast, California) had a short story that said judge candidate Mark Hood has received nearly 80 percent of the judge and law enforcement endorsements in the area. Hood is a McGeorge graduate, the story said.

Oct. 14

The Record had a front-page story with a large photo of the Conservatory of Music’s opera program rendition of Brundibar. The opera is being performed at local schools as well as at the University for public showings.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story on the five candidates for the Galt School Board. One of them is Pacific graduate Ervin Hatzenbuhler.

The Record had a story about an upcoming discussion about plans to restore parts of the Calaveras River. Biology Professor Greg Anderson is scheduled as one of the guest speakers.

The Lakeland Ledger (Florida) ran the New York Times article about the history of the Clampers. Pacific archivist Michael Wurtz was quoted in that story.

The Record had a short story about an upcoming “Financial Workshop” call-in program they will host, where experts will help people with their finances. One of the experts is McGeorge graduate Scott Beattie.

The Fiji Times ran a Sacramento Bee story about a Fiji immigrants plea to local prosecutors that he will only testify against two murder suspects if the federal government drops its efforts to deport him. McGeorge professor John Meyers was quoted in the story.

The Southwest Florida Herald Tribune and the International Herald Tribune (International version of the New York Times) ran the New York Times story on the history of E. Clampus Vitus. Pacific archivist Michael Wurtz was quoted in the story.

The Contra Costa Times ran a story on the founding of The California Maritime Academy. The story said organizer Norris Cooper Jr. helped create the award-winning Black Male Symposium at the University of the Pacific in Stockton in 2005.

Oct. 15

The Oregonian had an obituary for Pacific graduate Robert Hansen Woolf. He was 63.

The Press Enterprise (Riverside) had a brief that said McGeorge graduate Sean Lafferty was promoted in the district attorney’s office.

The Jazz Times had a story on Dave Brubeck’s newest album. The story said Brubeck will receive an honorary doctorate of fine arts degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, on October 18, and will also be inducted into the California Museum’s California Hall of Fame on Dec. 15.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story about the Kings game being played at Pacific tonight.

The San Bernardino Sun and The Record ran a story about the Kings-Clippers game that was played at Pacific Wednesday night.

The Record had a brief that said The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at University of the Pacific will host Noche de Ciencias on campus tonight.

The Fresno Bee had a story about a long-running feud between judge Oliver W. Wanger and Fresno Mayor Alan Autry. Wanger is a McGeorge graduate, the story said.

The Daily Business News had a story that said 11 lawyers who work for the Sacramento Law Firm McDonough Holland & Allen PC was named to the “Best Attorneys in America” list that is compiled annually. The story said that Jim Clarke and Jeffry R. Jones, both on the list, are graduates of McGeorge.

The Record had a story that said the Alexander String Quartet will play at Pacific on Sunday.

Channel 13 (CBS, Sacramento) had a story about how Stockton Police were doing underage-alcohol-sale stings in the Stockton area. The story mentioned that University of the Pacific police shadowed along as the university is thinking about running a similar program at liquor stores in the vicinity of the Stockton campus.

Oct. 17

The Record had a story about the upcoming dental hygiene fair being put on by Dugoni School of Dentistry at the Stockton campus clinic.

The Central Valley Business Times ran a brief about Rich Toledo’s promotion to director of admissions.

The Pasadena Star News had a story about the Clippers-Kings game that was held at Pacific Wednesday night.

Capital Public Radio had a news story about Proposition 9, the proposed state law that would make it harder for prisoners to get early parole. The story talked to Harriet Salarno, whose daughter Catlina was shot to death by an ex-boyfriend on Pacific’s Stockton campus in 1979.

The Record had a story about the “Best of San Joaquin” Gala that was held Thursday. It mentioned that Pacific’s Jazz Ensemble played at the party.

The Record had a brief about how elementary school students will plant nearly 400 tulips at Pixie Woods this weekend. The students will be chaperoned by members of Pacific’s chapter of Omega Phi Alpha, the brief said.

The Record had a story about the upcoming Midnight Mania basketball night that coming up at Pacific.

KCRA (NBC, Sacramento) had a short story on the 6 p.m. news about the repairs underway to replace a stained glass window in Burns tower. Media Relations Manager Patrick Giblin was quoted in the story.

Oct. 18

The Oregonian had a feature story on computer software startup Scayl Inc. The president of the company, Mark Mitchell, is a graduate of Pacific.

The Record had a story about Proposition 11 and how it would redistrict California. Political Science Professor Bob Benedetti was quoted.

Oct. 19

The Tri-Valley Herald (Livermore area) had a story about the six candidates running for the Tracy Unified School District Board of Trustees. One of the candidates if Pacific graduate Tom Hawkins.

The Las Vegas Review Journal had a story about the race for a judge seat there, currently occupied by McGeorge graduate and incumbent judge Jennifer Elliott.

The Tacoma News Tribune had a feature story on NFL coach Jon Gruden. The story said Gruden got his start at Pacific.

The Record had a story about the “Reach for the Stars” event held in Stockton on Saturday. The event was organized by Pacific Regent and graduate Jose Hernandez.

Oct. 20

The Record had a story about the new high-tech equipment being installed in area classrooms. The story said that Pacific’s new Biological Sciences Center has some of the most advanced teaching technology built into it. Dan Campbell, manager of instructional media services, was quoted in the story.

The Record ran a brief that said Rich Toledo would be the new director of admissions for Pacific.

Men’s Health Magazine had a story that listed the top tips for keeping healthy teeth. One of the tips – that chewing gum is good for teeth – was listed as a discovery by the Dugoni School of Dentistry.

Oct. 21

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on the two main candidates for a judge’s seat in San Joaquin County. One of the candidates is McGeorge graduate Phil Urie.

The Sacramento Bee had a story that said if Proposition 8 passes, there are some people arguing that the state should then immediately nullify the 11,000 same-sex marriages that have occurred in the state this year. McGeorge professor Larry Levine was quoted.

Oct. 22

The Record had a front-page story on Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu’s visit to Pacific on Wednesday.

The Record had a centerpiece Metro story about a drug-awareness program were elementary students planted tulip bulbs at Pixie Woods amusement park. The students were chaperoned by members of the Pacific chapter of Omega Phi Alpha. A photo of Pacific student David Scheidt helping a student plant bulbs was prominently displayed.

The Record had a brief about the speech by Dinesh D’Souza at Pacific on Thursday. The speech is co-sponsored by the Young Republicans Club.

The Santa Barbara News ran the Sacramento Bee’s story about what changes could happen to marriage if Proposition 8 is passed. McGeorge professor Larry Levine was quoted in the story.

The Record had a feature story on women’s basketball coach Lynn Roberts and her assessment of the team this year.

BlogCritic Magazine had a review of the Dave Brubeck album “On the Radio: Live 1956-1957.” The review mentioned that he graduated from Pacific.

Native Times Magazine, a publication that focuses on Native American issues, had an article about the scholarships awarded to Native American students by Accenture’s American Indian Scholarship Fund. One of the students who received a scholarship, Felicia Frizzell, is an incoming Dugoni student.

The Honolulu Advertiser had a story about how many Pacific Tiger soccer players are from Hawaii (five). Pacific soccer coach Keith Coleman was quoted in the story.

The Tri-Valley Herald (Livermore) had a story about all the candidates running for the Manteca City Council. One of those candidates is Pacific graduate Debby Moorhead, the story said.

Oct. 23

Studentit Magazine (Italy) had a brief about a career panel for prospective college students. It mentioned that representatives from McGeorge School of Law would be present.

The Sacramento Bee had a story that said that cutbacks in salaries for state workers will have the biggest impact on the Sacramento area since state government jobs account for more than one-tenth of all job there. The story quoted Eberhardt Business Forecast Center director Jeff Michael.

The Record had a story that said Joe Ford, who was on the injured list last year, is back playing basketball for the men’s team this year.

The Record had a review of the latest The Clash album to be released – a live recording of them at Shea Stadium. The story mentioned that The Clash played at Pacific in 1984.

The Redding Record Searchlight had an obit on Pacific graduate Mark William Bresolin, 44.

The Columbia Basin Herald (Washington state) had an obit on Pacific graduate Margaret Ann Kubo, 62.

The Times Herald (Napa County) had an obit on McGeorge graduate Angel Rose Stewart, 45.

The Sacramento Bee had a front-page story about Glen Fait’s opposition to Proposition 8. Fait, the former mayor of Folsom, is currently the associate dean at McGeorge School of Law, the story said.

Oct. 24

The Record had a story on the Pacific students who are going to perform “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in the Pacific Theatre Saturday night. Several Pacific students were quoted in the story. Pacific professor Patti McCarthy also was quoted.

The Record had a story about how a Pacific student saw a man trying to break into a car parked at a local church and called the Pacific police department. Pacific police responded quickly and arrested the man. Turned out he had a $1.6 million bond out for his arrest and he was armed with a loaded handgun.

Gay.com, a Bay Area online news service that covers homosexual issues, ran the Sacramento Bee story about McGeorge Professor Glen Fait announcing he was against Proposition 8. Fait is a Republican, the story said.

The San Francisco Business Times had a profile on Pacific graduate Ken Williams, president of Stone & Youngberg.

Oct. 25

The Daily Breeze (Los Angeles) had a story about how Proposition 4 is being advertised as a law that will strengthen sexual predator punishments, but in fact the law has nothing to do with sexual predator statutes. McGeorge professor Mary-Beth Moylan was quoted.

The Merced Sun Star had a story that said local high school basketball champ Allen Huddleston will attend Pacific next year.

Oct. 26

The Fresno Bee had a lengthy story about the growing unemployment rate and how it is starting to affect small businesses. Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted.

The Bakersfield Californian had a story about how the Pacific Tiger’s soccer team beat Bakersfield’s team on Saturday.

The Morning Call (Pennsylvania) had a story about Dave Brubeck’s obsession with Bach. The story mentioned his affiliation with Pacific.

The Record had a story about the rising number of renters who are discovering the hard way that the homes/apartments they are in are being foreclosed on. Many have paid rent on time and are being evicted anyway, losing security deposits as well as last-month deposits. Eberhardt professor John Knight was quoted in the story.

The Record had a brief about how Salon.com author Kate Moses will speak at Pacific on Monday about Sylvia Plath.

The San Diego Tribune had an obituary on Pacific graduate Deborah Bacon Hellwig. She was 53.

The Record had an obit on Pacific graduate Ernest C. Herrera . He was 43.

Oct. 27

The Record had a brief that ran the name of the Pacific engineering students who were recently awarded engineering spots in the Engineering Industry Fellowship.

Channel 10 (ABC Sacramento) had a story about the Student Investment Fund and how it is doing in the dropping stock market. Though the fund has lost money this year, it is still doing much better than most Wall Street investment funds, the story said.

The Californian (Central Coast) had a feature story on Pacific graduate Joe Kaslin.

The Fresno Bee had a story about how “overqualified” people are applying for menial jobs out of desperation for a paycheck. Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted.

Gamespot Magazine had a story about the upcoming court hearing about a challenge to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s law that restricts the sale of video games to minors. The story mentioned that the hearing will take place at McGeorge School of Law.

Oct. 28

The Record had a story that analyzed the Stockton City Council race, concluding that almost all the candidates agree on almost all the same issues. Political Science Professor Bob Benedetti was quoted saying the endorsements carry more weight in local elections than positions.

The Record had a story that said thanks to mail-in-ballots, nearly one-third of registered voters in San Joaquin County have already voted. Political Science Professor Bob Benedetti was quoted.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story about how six employees of the Lodi Unified School District will be honored for serving more than 35 years. One of those being honored is Pacific graduate Catherine Pennington.

Oct. 29

The Merced Sun Star had a feature column about star high school athlete Allen Huddleston. Huddleston, who dominates on both the football field and basketball court, will attend Pacific next year, it was stated in the column.

The Record had a feature story on the effort by the Global Center and Pacific's School of International Studies to share educational and business resources between Pacific and universities in Africa. Jerry Hildebrand, director of the Global Center for Social Entrepreneurship at University of the Pacific, was quoted.

BioMedicine Magazine had a short story that said Ron Greenspan, DDS, has been selected for the 2008 Best of San Diego Award in the Orthodontists category by the Washington, D.C. based U.S. Local Business Association. The story mentioned the Greenspan used to teach at Dugoni School of Dentistry.

The National Law Journal had a story that said California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has no intention to meet a judicial deadline to hand over $250 million to improve the health care system in California’s prisons. The story mentioned that the same judge named McGeorge professor J. Clark Kelso to oversee the effort to improve the prison clinics.

Fox 40 (Sacramento) had a story about how many believe that private universities are too expensive in these troubled economic times. The story focused on Pacific’s tuition and interviewed two current students for the story. No officials from Pacific were interviewed as none were asked by Fox.

News 10 (ABC, Sacramento) had a story that said that hard economic conditions often bring an increase in crime. McGeorge professor Mike Vitiello was quoted.

News 10 had a story about a special session of the California 9th Circuit Court of Appeals holding session at McGeorge School of Law. The Alameda Times and GamePolitics.coms had a similar story.

Science Magazine had a story about how recent studies have shown that farm chemicals are having a bigger impact on frogs and other amphibians than previously thought. Ecology professor Janet Koprivnikar was quoted.

TMC Net (an online news aggregator for retailers) ran a story that said the Electronic Retailers Association named Pacific graduate Julie J. Coons as its new CEO and president.

The Record had an obit on Pacific graduate Edwin T. Endow, 55.

Oct. 30

The Record had a lengthy story about all the issues and complications surrounding the new Medicare Part D plans. The story included a listing of all the Medicare Part D workshops that are sponsored by the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

The Modesto Bee ran a brief that said Merced high school football champion Allen Huddleston will play basketball at Pacific next year.

The Record had a story about the case of an immigrant accused of homicide who now believes the district attorney is biased in filing charges in the case. McGeorge professor Mike Vitiello was quoted.

The Napa News had an obit on McGeorge graduate John Edward Ryan, 71.

All About Jazz, an online jazz magazine, ran Pacific’s press release about the upcoming Marvin Stamm concert.

The Arbitor (Boise, Idaho) had a story about the “Day of the Dead” celebration in Hispanic communities. Pacific professor Martin Camps was quoted.

The Record had a story that said Pacific’s basketball team was ranked third in the annual media Big West Poll.

Oct. 31

The Record had a front-page story about a new theater opening in Manteca that will offer free admission and popcorn to hits first customers today. Professor Patti McCarthy was quoted in the story.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution had a news-obit on John Ryan, dean of Marshall Law School. Ryan graduated from McGeorge School of Law, the story said.
