Doctor of Physical Therapy Program establishes International Internships

(October 27, 2008) -

Doctor of Physical Therapy students at the University of the Pacific have over 300 sites from which to select for their internships. While some students opt to stay in California, others intern in Hawaii, New York City, Texas, Utah, Colorado-virtually all over the US. Over the past two years, Dr. Salamon and Dr. Peterson have been working to expand the opportunities to include international sites.

In September of 2008, the Physical Therapy Department hosted its first international exchange student, Katie Snell, from Leeds Metropolitan University in Leeds, England. Katie completed a week-long orientation to Pacific and the program prior to beginning her 5 week physical therapy internship at Kaiser South Sacramento.

In July of 2009 Calisse Trunnell '09 will begin her final 8 week internship to complete her doctoral requirements in Leeds.

In June of this year, Dr. Peterson traveled to Malawi, Africa where she established an arrangement for placing Doctor of Physical Therapy students at Cure International Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi. Here, students will complete an 8-week internship working under the supervision of a CA-licensed Physical Therapist while examining, evaluating, and treating children who have undergone a variety of orthopedic surgeries. The first Pacific DPT Intern will be Alexis Anderson '09 who will begin her final 8-week internship in July of 2009.

Stay posted for perspectives from our international interns! They will be providing summaries of their experiences next summer and fall.
