College of the Pacific

Alissa Ackerman-Acklin

Teaching Approach

I believe that the most important role of teaching is engaging students.

Therefore, my teaching style is all about discussion and critical thinking.

I use various technologies and mediums, including plenty of guest speakers, videos, PowerPoint presentations and in-class activities.

The beautiful thing about our discipline, both in sociology and criminology, is that there is so much room for debate about various concepts.

Therefore, I believe it is critical to entertain opposing opinions and concepts in class debates.

I provide official statistics from the criminal justice system and encourage my students to be respectful of and to think critically about that system.

I also encourage students to think "outside the box."

My hope is to always have students seeking knowledge and to provide a course environment for them to do so freely.

I am enthusiastic and excited about the work I do and the courses I teach and I hope that my enthusiasm about criminology and criminal justice is contagious!
