Nov. 1

The Sacramento Bee had a front-page story about how many pharmacies are offering huge signing bonuses to new pharmacy graduates willing to relocate to small rural towns. The story focused on recent Pacific graduate Libby Olson, who recently signed to work in one of Sutter Health’s more remote clinics. Phil Oppenheimer, dean of the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, also was quoted.

The Record had a story that said a recent report confirms that agriculture is still one of the most important aspects of the local economy. Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted.

The Richmond Times ran the Sacramento Bee story about how many same-sex couples are worried about whether their marriages will still be legal if Proposition 8 passes Tuesday. McGeorge Professor Larry Levine was quoted.

The Los Angeles Times blog online had a feature story on Pacific graduate and current USC football coach Pete Carroll.

The Record had a brief about an election night event in the DeRosa University Center. Several political science professors will give commentary on the returns as they come in. The event is open to the public.

The Record had a story that said the new Imax screen in downtown Stockton will be unveiled next week. Film professor Patti McCarthy was quoted.

The San Diego Union Tribune had a feature story on Pacific graduate Mike Cully, who was name the director of the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce recently.

The Tracy Press had a story that said election officials are expecting a record turnout on Tuesday, based on the fact that nearly 90 percent of the county’s absentee ballots have already been mailed back. Political Science Professor Robert Benedetti was quoted.

Nov. 2

The Rhode Island Providence Journal had a feature story on Pacific graduate Theodore B. Olson, a high-powered attorney who successfully convinced the Supreme Court to stop the ballot recount in Florida in 2000, thus giving the Republicans the White House. Olson is arguing in front of the Supreme Court today on behalf of Rhode Island in a case involving land use rights on Indian reservations.

The Record had a brief that said the Pacific women’s swimming team finished undefeated in a tournament held this past weekend.

Nov. 3

Capital Public Radio had a story about how the Stockton mayor’s race is the first run-off election in more than three decades in the city. Political Science Professor Bob Benedetti was quoted.

The Modesto Bee had a story about Sunday’s exhibition basketball game between Pacific and California State University Stanislaus. Pacific won.

The Modesto Bee ran the Sacramento Bee story about the enticements for pharmacists. A Pacific graduate and dean Phil Oppenheimer were both featured in the story.

The Record had a story about the get-out-the-vote efforts underway in minority-dominated neighborhoods in San Joaquin County. Sociology professor Paul Burke was quoted.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel had a feature obit on Pacific graduate Truella Louise Jensen Lund, who was the first female police officer in Santa Cruz. She was 93.

The Record had a brief about "Singgalot: The Ties That Bind," a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian celebrating Filipino culture which is on display from Nov. 17 to Dec. 19 at the Reynold’s Gallery.

The Record had a short story that said Pacific’s women soccer team beat UC Davis Sunday, thus securing a spot in the Big West championship.

The Los Angeles Times had a feature story on Pacific graduate Scott Boras. Boras helps baseball players negotiate contracts.

New West Magazine (Wyoming) had a story that said McGeorge graduate and Libertarian candidate W. David Herbert has a good chance at winning a seat in the Wyoming state legislature on Tuesday.

McGeorge professor Leslie Jacobs was featured on KOVR-Ch. 13 offering insights into what would happen in CA, if Prop 8 passes.

Nov. 4

The Record had a brief about how all pharmacy students at the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences will be required to take a course on how to figure out the new Medicare Part D paperwork.

The Record had a story about the many adult classes offered by area colleges. Part of the story focused on Pacific’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

The Record had a brief that said Poet Jan Beatty will read her poetry on campus this evening.

The Contra Costa Times had an obituary on Pacific graduate Duane Sewell, 90.

Fox 40 (Sacramento) did a story about how a “Family” organization released a report that said Stockton residents have the second highest rate of people who use adult-oriented Web sites in the United States. Several Pacific students were asked to comment on the study.

Channel 10 (ABC Sacramento) carried footage of the “Election Countdown” event held in the DeRosa University Center during the presidential returns. The event featured several political science professors, students and people from the community.

The Associated Press sent a photographer to campus to photograph Pacific’s polling booth.

Nov. 5

The Providence Journal (Rhode Island) ran an editorial written by Pacific President Donald V. DeRosa on how to accurately assess the true cost of a college education.

The Arizona Republic had a story about Pacific graduate and football star Pete Carroll.

The Record had a story that said Pacific swept Sacramento State in volleyball on Tuesday.

The Record had a story that said Pacific sophomore and amateur golfer T.J. Bordeaux is doing well in this week’s Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational Tournament.

Nov. 6

The Sacramento Business Journal had a story that said Gov. Schwarzenegger appointed four new judges, including McGeorge graduates Ernest Sawtelle and Samuel McAdam.

The Contra Costa Times had a story that said Bank of the West had a 49 percent decline in profits this quarter. Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted.

The Sonora Union Democrat had a news-obit on former adjunct professor Basil Aubrey Fleming Jr. He was 82.

Nov. 7

The Record had a large center-of-metro feature story on the Paul Winters Speech and Debate Tournament, starting today on campus. The story quoted several members of Pacific’s speech team and included photos of them rehearsing earlier this week.

The Sacramento Bee had a news obituary on McGeorge graduate Robert Earl McCarthy. He was 86.

The Lodi News Sentinel had a story that said a Libertarian candidate running for the 10th Assembly District received nearly 10 percent of the vote on Tuesday and may have taken votes from both liberals and conservatives. As a result, the race between the Republican and Democratic candidates is still too close to call. Political Science Professor Keith Smith was quoted in the story.

Nov. 8

The Houston Chronicle had a lengthy column about how the Obama administration should take the lead in Middle East peace talks. The column was co-written by McGeorge professor Omar M. Dajani.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had an obit on Pacific graduate Ernesto Cortez "Ernie" Herrera. He was 42.

Nov. 9

USA Today had a story about Universities that have faculty who try to encourage their students to get involved in the community while they are studying. University of the Pacific was mentioned as a school with “high levels of student-faculty engagement outside the classroom.” The article appeared online on Sunday, but was printed in the Monday edition of the paper. The printed version did not include the paragraph mentioning Pacific. However, an online version of USA Today’s “NSSE” (National Survey of Student Engagement) Scores did include Pacific and said that Pacific had a higher ranking than other schools on the West Coast.

The Wichita Eagle had as story that said Pacific Conservatory Professor Nicolasa Kuster will guest-perform with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra during a performance of Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass this week.

The Sacramento Union had a story about the special hearings held by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals at McGeorge School of Law last week.

The News Blaze (Seattle Washington) had a story that said Dugoni graduate Dr. Jason Fligor scored top rating in King 5's 2008 Evening Magazine's Best of Western Washington competition, with an impressive 2nd place in the "best dentist" category.

The Bakersfield Californian had an obit for Hazel Kelley McCuen ’28. She was 79.

Nov. 10

The Record had a brief that said Dugoni graduate Dr. Lyndon S. Low received a fellowship in the International College of Dentists on Oct. 17 at the American Dental Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on Pharmacy professor Mark Walberg, who works at a Lodi pharmacy, and how he will offer a Medicare Part D workshops for the community this week.

Nov. 11

The Record had a feature story on Joe Serra, a part-time professor of orthopedics at Pacific, the former team doctor to the Stockton campus and an well-known community activist.

The San Luis Obispo Tribune ran the Sacramento Bee story about how rural pharmacies are offering huge bonuses to new pharmacists to relocate to their areas and work in small communities. Phillip Oppenheimer, dean of the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, was quoted in the story.

CBS 13 (Sacramento) aired a story on their 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts on the shortage of Pharmacists in the United States. The story focused on the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and stressed that the program offered an accelerated track. The story featured interviews with two pharmacy students and Dean Phil Oppenheimer.

The Bellingham Herald (Washington), Eastern Michigan Echo and Hispanic Business Magazine ran the Sacramento Bee’s story about the shortage of pharmacists. Dean Phil Oppenheimer was quoted in the story.

The New Vision (Uganda) had a story that said the collapsing financial market is putting a strain on microfinancing operations. The story quoted Jerry Hildebrand, director for Pacific’s Global Centre for Social Entrepreneurship.

McGeorge professor John Sims did a lengthy (2-1/2 minute) live interview on KCRA3's 6pm broadcast, regarding the constitutionality of Prop 8, on what grounds challenges could be expected, and his view of what will happen to the 18,000 gays who married between the effective date of the CA Supreme Court's decision and election day.

The Los Angeles Times had a feature story about the sudden resignation of Scott Eckern from the director’s position of a Sacramento Theater Company. He resigned after it was revealed he donated money to a pro Proposition 8 campaign, causing many top musicians and stars to say they would not work with him. The story mentioned that Eckern has held many high-profile positions in the past, including a teaching position at Pacific, Sacramento State and Auburn College.

Nov. 12

The Contra Costa Times had a story that said the state’s real estate prices are continuing to drop. Jeff Michael, director of the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center, was quoted.

The Arkansas Democrat Gazette and the Raleigh News and Observer ran the Sacramento Bee’s story about the shortage of pharmacists. Dean Phil Oppenheimer was quoted in the story.

The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder had a story quoting communications experts about how Obama won the election. Communications department chair Qingwen Dong was quoted.

Nov. 13

The Monterey County Herald ran the Sacramento Bee story about how there is a shortage of pharmacists. Dean Phil Oppenheimer from the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences was quoted.

Vida en el Valle had a story about how Federación Mexicana de Fútbol in Mexico is recruiting local soccer stars to build up the national women’s soccer team. The story said one of the players is Pacific soccer coach Carmen Padilla.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story about the car crash that has disabled Pacific student Alicia Schmid. Schmid had to take a year off of her studies to recover. She currently is suing the California Department of Transportation, saying it was poor road planning that contributed to her accident.

The San Jose Mercury News had a brief that said local baseball champion Dustin Torchio has signed to play for Pacific next year.

The Contra Costa Times ran an editorial about the costs of private universities. The editorial was written by Pacific President Donald V. DeRosa.

The Freelance Star (Fredericksberg, Virginia) ran the Sacramento Bee story about the shortage of pharmacists in the nation. Dean Phil Oppenheimer was quoted in the story.

The Bakersfield Californian had a short story that said local high school volleyball champion Natalie Robinson will play for Pacific next year.

Nov. 14

Capital Public Radio had a feature story about tonight’s Marvin Stamm/Open World Russian Jazz concert at Pacific. Dr. Steve Anderson, director of the Brubeck Institute, was quoted.

The Record had a center-piece feature story about tonight’s Marvin Stamm/Open World Russian Jazz concert. There was a sidebar about Dave Brubeck’s history with the State Department.

The Record had a story about this weekend’s Japanese Culture Festival at Pacific.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on Pacific student Alex Cesena, who works as a football offensive coordinator at Tokay High School in Lodi.

The Record had a feature story on Conservatory Professor Patricia Shands and her upcoming concert with the Stockton Symphony Orchestra.

The Sacramento Bee had an obituary on McGeorge graduate Jennifer Lynn Weck, age 42. She was a deputy attorney general for the state of California and had argued in front of the state Supreme Court. She died from cancer.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story about a lawsuit filed by a University of the Pacific student against the California Department of Transportation stemming from a car crash that injured the student. The jury ruled against her case.

The Columbus (Ohio) Business First weekly paper ran a feature story on McGeorge graduate and collections agency owner Larry Cassidy.

The Sacramento Bee posted an interview with Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael on its Web site. The interview focused on home foreclosures.

The San Francisco Chronicle had a feature-obituary on attorney and McGeorge graduate Peter Lee Townsend. He was 82.

Nov. 15

The Record had a story about whether Barack Obama will have to start a “New New Deal” in order to solve the current financial crisis. Professor Farley Staniech was quoted.

The Record had a story about the Health Forum that was held at Pacific earlier this week about the lack of doctors in the area.

The Register Guard (Eugene Oregon) had an obit for Pacific graduate Howard L. Adams. He was 84.

The Chronicle of Higher Education had a question and answer column about the use of performance-enhancing drugs in professional and college athletics. The story mentioned that Pacific recently hosted a roundtable forum with law enforcement officials and athletic directors to explore the subject.

Nov. 16

The Record had a story about the Japanese Festival held at Pacific on Saturday.

The Pittsburg Tribune ran a review of Dave Brubeck’s newest album of live cuts from his many appearances at the Monterey Jazz Festival. The review mentioned his association with Pacific.

The News Blaze (Orange County) had a story about how Gov. Schwarzenegger appointed three people to fill vacant judge’s seats. McGeorge graduate Ernest W. Sawtelle was one of the appointees.

The San Luis Obispo Tribune had an obit on Dr. Richard Edwin Bruschi, a graduate of the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He was 56.

Nov. 17

The Modesto Bee had a story about how enrollment in area schools has dropped significantly in the past year due to the foreclosure and economic crisis. People are moving out of the area due to lack of housing and jobs. Economics Professor Bill Herrin was quoted.

The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder had a story that talked about the effective campaign strategies used by Barack Obama. Communications Professor Qingwen Dong was quoted.

The Houston Chronicle and Vindy (an independent newspaper in Pittsburg, Penn.) ran the Sacramento Bee story about the nationwide shortage of pharmacists. Dean Phil Oppenheimer was quoted.

The Edge, an alternative weekly in Boston, had a story that asked the question “Is a new Harvey Milk needed?” McGeorge Professor Larry Levine was quoted.

The Contra Costa Times had an obit on Pacific graduate Amy Wycliffe DeLong-Wallace. She was 51.

The News Blaze (Orange County) had a story that said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed McGeorge graduate Samuel T. McAdam to a judgeship in the Yolo County Superior Court.

Nov. 18

The Fresno Bee ran the Sacramento Bee story about the shortage of pharmacists in the country. The story quoted Dean Phil Oppenheimer.

The Record had a feature story on Pacific graduate Tom Jones, who is being inducted into Stockton’s Hall of Fame this week.

Both the Tracy Press and Record had short stories on how Pacific graduate Vanessa Gomez is being named teacher of the year. She also will talk about her specialty, bilingual education.

The dBusiness News (Bismark, N. Dakota) had a story that said McDonough Holland & Allen PC, a leading Northern California law firm representing both private and public sector clients, hired McGeorge graduate Kenneth Zanotto.

Zawya, a Middle Eastern news service that offers English-language news to Americans and Europeans living in the area, covered a story that said the Zain Group hired Pacific graduate Khaled Al-Hajeri to run their mobile phone operation in Kuwait.

The Record had a brief that said Pacific’s archivist, Michael Wurtz, will discuss Stockton’s State Hospital during a presentation at the Cesar Chavez Central Library.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story that said Tokay High School baseball pitcher Bobby Raymos has agreed to attend Pacific next semester.

Nov. 19

The Stanford Report had a brief that said Dr. Steven Chang, M.D., was appointed to the Robert C. and Jeannette Powell Neurosciences Professor Endowed Chair. The brief mentioned the Powell’s support of University of the Pacific.

Univision had a story about the Interamerican program on the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. news. The story interviewed several Pacific students and Professor Susan Giraldez.

The Kuwait Times ran the story that said Pacific graduate Khaled Al-Hajeri as will oversee Zain’s mobile phone operations in Kuwait.

ABC Channel 10 (Sacramento) had a story that said Stockton’s City Council approved a new housing development despite the record number of foreclosures in the city because the population growth is expected to demand new houses by the time the development is completed. Eberhardt Professor John Knight was quoted in the story.

The Columbia Daily Tribune (Missouri) ran the Sacramento Bee story on the national pharmacist shortage. Dean Phil Oppenheimer was quoted.

Nov. 20

The Record ran a large color photo of one of Pacific’s officers patrolling campus on the newly-purchased T3Motion personal electronic cart. The three-wheeled devices will allow officers to get across campus faster than in a patrol car.

The Record had a feature story on Pacific’s Tamari'i Matairea Polynesian Dance Group, which will perform this weekend.

The Merced Sun Star ran a list of local high school sports stars who have signed letters of intent with colleges. The story said that Allen Huddleston will play basketball at Pacific next year.

Nov. 21

The Sacramento Bee had a feature story about NBA player Bobby Brown. In the story, he discussed the times he would travel to the area as a member of the Cal State Fullerton team and said that the team always enjoyed playing against the Pacific Tigers than the UC Davis Aggies. “UOP would always pack the place. The fans really got into it to.”

The Modesto Bee had a story that said home values have plunged again in the area. Eberhardt Professor John Knight was quoted.

The Southerner (Southern Illinois University) had a story that said their debate team took top honors at the Kennedy/Winters tournament held at Pacific a few weeks ago. The story said the Pacific tournament was “the largest tournament scheduled for the team this year.” The story also mentioned that the national Lincoln-Kennedy Debate Tournament will be held at Pacific next March.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story about how fees in the CSU and UC system will go up to make up for the state budget shortfall. The story mentioned the Pacific is not directly affected by the budget problem.

The Modesto Bee had a short story that said Pacific graduate Fred Silva was named Citizen of the Year by The Portuguese Education Foundation of Central California.

Nov. 22

The Record had a story about how banking officials delivered a “cease and desist” order on Delta Bank, headquartered in Manteca. Eberhardt Professor Joe Johnson was quoted.

The Record had a feature story on bilingual education expert and Pacific graduate Vanessa Gomez. Gomez spoke with Benerd students last week.

The Record had a story about how the unemployment rate in San Joaquin County jumped one-half percentage point in the past month. Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram had an editorial blasting a plan that would build new hospitals for California prisons. The editorial said that the plan is being spearheaded by McGeorge professor J. Clark Kelso.

The Sacramento Bee ran an obit on McGeorge graduate Chester Walter Janus. He was 89.

Nov. 23

The Record ran an editorial written by President Don DeRosa about the true costs of higher education at private colleges. It ran as a guest column.

Nov. 24

The Record had a brief that said Pacific employee Georgette Hunefeld was installed as president of the Dameron Hospital Foundation at the 29th annual Trustee Dinner at the Stockton Golf & Country Club.

The Record had a story about the annual Hospice Community Giving Tree Lighting Ceremony, held in Stockton Tuesday night. Baseball coach Don Barbara was quoted as he attended the event.

WTHR News (NBC, Indianapolis), Inside Indiana News (a weekly paper) and several other radio stations and area newspapers ran a story that said the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions has penalized Indiana University for infractions in its men’s basketball program. Ted Leland, Pacific’s vice president of advancement and a committee member, was mentioned in the story.

Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was interviewed on National Public Radio this morning about the predictions for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

The San Jose Mercury News had a story about a woman who was murdered in her home by a stalker. The woman, identified as Loan Kim Nguyen, had recently completed a communications degree at University of the Pacific. Several Bay Area news stations also did stories on the homicide.

Nov. 27

The Record had an editorial praising Pacific graduate and recent “Teacher of the Year” Vanessa Gomez. The editorial mentioned that she recently gave a speech at Pacific to students about the importance of bilingual education.

The Central Valley Business Times had a story about the annual “Hit of Reality” fund-raiser that starts Wednesday at Pacific.

The San Jose Mercury news had a follow-up story to the Nguyen homicide. The San Francisco Chronicle, San Mateo Times and Oakland Tribune all ran their first stories on the homicide.

The Record had a story about the outlook for the shopping season for local businesses. Professor David Kauper was quoted.

The New York Times had a small brief about Dave Brubeck’s upcoming concert there. His association with University of the Pacific was mentioned.

The Sacramento Bee had an obituary on Pacific graduate Donald Collins Hamilton, Jr. He was 79.

Nov. 28

The Sacramento Bee had a lengthy story about the prospects for students hoping to attend college in the next year and how the economic downturn will affect them. Robert Alexander, associate provost for enrollment, was quoted in the story.

Vida en el Valle had a story about the state budget cuts and how they will reduce enrollment at state colleges. The story mentioned that Pacific would not be cutting back on enrollment.

The Weekend Pinnacle (Hollister, California) had a feature story on migrant worker Martin Gonzalez, who is trying to make sure all his children go to college. Two of his children currently are students at University of the Pacific, the story said.

Capital Public Radio ran a story about the outlook for merchants during the upcoming holiday shopping season. Jeff Michael, director of the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center, was interviewed.

The Tracy Press ran a feature story on Pacific graduate Marjorie “Marge” Larsen, 92. She was inducted into the Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame. Larsen organized the first women’s softball team in Tracy in the summer of 1935 while working on her master’s degree at the College of the Pacific. In 1939, she organized the first women’s basketball team in Tracy.

Nov. 29

The Record had a story about the homicide of Pacific student Loan Kim Nguyen. Media Relations Manager Patrick Giblin and President Donald V. DeRosa were both quoted in the story. Nguoi Viet Online, a Vietnamese News Service, also carried the story, but translated it into Vietnamese.

New American Media ran the Vida en el Valle story about the cuts to enrollment for state colleges. The story mentioned that Pacific was not cutting back enrollment.

Nov. 30

The Columbus Dispatch ran the Sacramento Bee story about the national pharmacist shortage. Phil Oppenheimer, dean of the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, was quoted.

The Los Angeles Times had a lengthy feature story on McGeorge graduate and active lawyer Pamela Griffin, who has been fighting for the release of her husband from California’s prison system for nearly two decades. California has kept her husband in isolation in Pelican Bay, claiming he runs the Aryan Brotherhood from his jail cell. The second part of the story is scheduled to be published Monday.
