Study Abroad

The Department of Modern Languages and Literature directs two summer language immersion programs in Assisi, Italy and Antigua, Guatemala.

Students earn academic credit equivalent to one or two semesters of Italian or Spanish.

Students, alumni, members of the community and students from other universities are welcome to join us on these exciting adventures which include travel to famous historic sites and total immersion in the target language culture.

These affordable programs will improve your fluency in the most authentic and effective way. As many participants put it: "This is a life-changing experience!"

New Spring Break Trip to Chile: In addition to these immersion programs, a new field trip to Chile is being offered in conjunction with the Spanish 135 (Latin American Literature) and Geology 65 (Geology of Chile) courses. Guatemala


Students have their own teacher in a one-on-one setting 6 hours per day, 5 days per week for 1 month.

They earn one semester of credit (4 units).

We currently offer the following courses:

SPAN 11a (First Semester Spanish)
SPAN 11b (Second Semester Spanish)
SPAN 23 (Third Semester Spanish)
SPAN 25 (Fourth Semester Spanish)
SPAN 27 Conversation
SPAN 101 Composition

Students live in families chosen by the school and are provided room and board (6 days per week/3 meals per day).

The director of the program works with the school on placing students and has full oversight of each student's living and learning situation. This is a complete immersion both at school and in the families.

Italian Summer




Spend 6 weeks this summer in the beautiful Umbrian hill town of Assisi, home of Saint Francis, and earn 8 extension units equivalent to first-year college Italian.
