Pacific's Society of Women Engineers Wins 1st Place in National Competition

Pacific SWE Team Tech 2008University of the Pacific SWE Student Section took FIRST PLACE in the Boeing Team Tech Competition during the Society of Women Engineers 2008 National Conference, which took place from November 5-8, 2008 in Baltimore, Maryland.  Pacific SWE section competed against the following SWE Student Sections:  California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Opispo, University of Michigan, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. 

Augmentative & Alternative Communication DevicePacific SWE project, Building a Cost-Effective Augmentative Communication Device, sponsored by United Cerebral Palsy, involved the design of a retrofitting process and accompanying speech-generation software to convert donated laptop computers into Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices.  Pacific SWE came home with the First Place certificate and an award of $5000, which the team hopes to use toward investing in the next Pacific SWE Team Tech project.   Cal Poly came in second place for their project sponsored by Stryker Endoscopy, while University of Michigan placed third for their work with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Insitute.

Without the support from United Cerebral Palsy, Professor Stark, Professor Hughes, Professor Ford, Professor Mathews, Adrian Avila, David Parker, Deborah Burdick, Pacific's School of Engineering and Computer Science, and countless others, Pacific SWE students would not have had such a great success.
