Dec. 1

The Modesto Bee ran the Sacramento Bee story about students wishing to go to college and how schools are cutting back enrollment due to budget problems. Associate Provost for Enrollment Robert Alexander was quoted.

The Lansing State Journal ran a story about the pharmacist shortage and how companies are offering huge bonuses to pharmacists who are willing to relocate. The story quoted recent Pacific graduate Libby Olson.

KCRA interviewed Professor Alan Ray about Loan Kim Nguyen, the Pacific student who was recently killed in her home by an intruder. Ray was Nguyen’s advisor and kept in contact with her over the summer.

The Los Angeles Times had a lengthy feature story on McGeorge graduate and active lawyer Pamela Griffin, who has been fighting for the release of her husband from California’s prison system for nearly two decades. Despite a lack of evidence, California has kept her husband in isolation in Pelican Bay, claiming he runs the Aryan Brotherhood from his jail cell. KTSF, a Mandarin-language television station in San Francisco, will interview Professor Alan Ray about Loan Kim Nguyen for its evening broadcast.

The Modesto Bee had a story about how the recession has finally been officially acknowledged by finance experts. Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted.

The Record had a column about how Stockton native Alex Sepiol was named one of the “hottest stars” in Hollywood by “Hollywood Reporter.” The column pointed out that Sepiol isn’t the first star to come from Stockton. The column mentioned the Pacific’s Stockton campus was featured in two of the four “Indiana Jones” movies.

Dec. 3

The Record had a story about how the San Joaquin County Landfill is now accepting credit and debit card payments from customers. Previously, it was a cash-only business. Eberhardt Marketing Professor Joel Herche was quoted.

KFBK Talk Radio in Sacramento interviewed one of the members of the Pike Fraternity about the annual “Hit of Reality” fund-raiser for the homeless, which starts today on campus.

The Record had a brief about how Dave Brubeck will be inducted into the California Hall of Fame.

Dec. 4

The Record had a centerpiece story on the Hit of Reality project currently being stated by members of Pi Kappa Alpha.

KFBK Radio did a live interview with members of Pi Kappa Alpha who are participating in “Hit of Reality.” Fox 40 news (Sacramento) also interviewed students for a story that will air this evening.

The Record had a feature story on the “Children of the West” play currently being put on by Pacific’s theater department.

The Appeal Democrat (Yuba City) had a story that said the featured vocalist for the annual St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Christmas concert is Pacific student Jake Williams.

The Record had a brief that said Santa Claus will be on the Pacific campus at 4 p.m. today for photos. Photos cost $5 each and all proceeds will go toward the Invisible Children foundation, which funds schools in Uganda.

Fox 40 News (Sacramento) had a story about the Pi Kappa Alpha fund-raiser “Hit of Reality.”

The Record had a brief that said the Lincoln Center was offering a “dinner and show” deal. Anyone who spends $25 or more at a restaurant in the center will get a certificate for two tickets to a local arts or sports event. The brief said Pacific is participating in the promotion.

Dec. 5 The Record had a feature story on the Stockton Chorale, led by Pacific Professor Edward Cetto. Cetto was quoted in the story.

Good Morning Sacramento (CBS and UPN, Sacramento) interviewed students participating in the “Hit of Reality” fund-raiser.

Dec. 6

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on Pacific graduate and professional pianist Esther Kemalyan-Roche.

The Fresno Bee had a story that said the Bulldog’s women’s basketball team lost to Pacific.

Dec. 7

The Press Democrat had a feature story on California Assemblywoman Noreen Evans. The story said she’s a graduate of McGeorge School of Law.

The Omaha World Herald printed part one of the Los Angeles Times series of feature stories on McGeorge graduate Pamela Griffin. Griffin’s husband is in prison and on death row.

The Contra Costa Times had an obit on McGeorge graduate Patrick "Pat" Rhoads Murphy. He was 80.

Dec. 8

The Record had a brief that said their new online editor is Pacific graduate Tara Cuslidge.

The Omaha World Herald Printed part two of the Los Angeles Times series of feature stories on McGeorge graduate Pamela Griffin.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on Pacific graduate and former Tigers aquatics coach Courtney Porter. Porter was nominated for the Sac-Joaquin Section Model Coach Award.

Dec. 9

Capital Public Radio interviewed Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael about the latest unemployment figures.

The Central Valley Business Times ran a story about the worsening of the economic crisis. Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a story that said the new school board trustees will hold their first meeting. One of the new trustees is McGeorge graduate Kathleen Amos.

The Sun Herald (Mississippi) and MSNBC Business Online both ran a story that said Duane Reade Holdings, Inc. appointed Frank Scorpiniti, 38, Senior Vice President of Pharmacy Operations. Scorpiniti is a graduate of the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the story said.

CBS 13 (Sacramento) credited University of the Pacific “researchers” for the Eberhardt School of Business Forecast that showed unemployment rates had risen and will continue to rise for several years.

The Fresno Bee and Sacramento Bee both had stories about the recent Eberhardt School of Business Forecasting Center’s report that said the recession is much worse than initially realized and that unemployment could peak next year.

Dec. 10

The Record had a story that quotes the latest Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center report. The report states the recession is much more severe than initially realized. Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted.

The Record had a brief about the student film festival, being held on campus tonight.

The Tri-Valley Herald (Livermore) had a story about the economic recession. It quoted a report issued by the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center this week.

The Modesto Bee had a story that said Pacific Southwest Container, a large business in Modesto, served lay-off notices to a large portion of their employees. Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted about the layoffs. KJWL Radio in Fresno and the Central Valley Business Times also had similar stories.

The Bay Guardian had a lengthy story about two different water conferences held simultaneously in San Francisco recently. The story focused on various water plans being debated by special interest groups, lobbyists and politicians. In it, Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted as an opponent to a desalinization plan.

Hispanic Business Magazine (Los Angeles) ran the Sacramento Bee story about how several business experts are predicting that the recession will continue to deepen into next year. The Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center report was cited in the story.

Dec. 11

The Sacramento Bee had a story about the deepening recession. Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted.

The Record had a story about this evening’s speech by California Supreme Court Justice Ming Chin. The speech will be held in Grace Covell Hall.

The Record had a story about how production cutbacks at the Toyota/GM plant in Fremont will affect the Stockton area. Mark Plovnick, director of economic development at Pacific, was quoted.

The Washington University Record (St. Louis) had a story about new trustees being named to their board. One of the trustees is Pacific graduate Steven Leer, the story said.

KFIV interviewed Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael about the high unemployment rate in the state of California.

The Record had a feature story on a project by local youth to raise interest in public libraries. Pacific students Nabeel Cajee was quoted.

News 10 (ABC, Sacramento) had a story about the declining economy. Jeff Michael, director of the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center, was quoted.

WTHR Television (ABC, Indianapolis, Indiana) ran a story that said the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions has penalized Indiana University for major violations in its men's basketball program. The story mentioned that Pacific vice president of advancement Ted Leland is a member of that committee.

The Fallbrook Bonsall Village News (Northern California) had a feature story about four high school students recently recognized for outstanding achievement. One of the students, Elizabeth (Lizzy) Eskue, will attend Pacific next fall, the story said.

Dec. 12

The Record had a story about a local church group’s immediate call for action by the government to help people who are losing their homes to foreclosure. Stockton has the highest foreclosure rates in the country. The story mentioned the recent Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center report that said the economy will continue to decline through next year.

The Record had a story about the impending deadline to make changes for Medicare Part D benefits. The story mentioned that Pacific pharmacy students recently held a workshop on this subject in Lodi last month.

Dec. 13

The Record had a front page story about how Pacific’s Society of Women Engineer’s chapter donated a communications device to a local man with cerebral palsy.

The Globe and Mail (Toronto) had a story that rounded up all the books that have recently come out that look at the history of food. History professor Ken Albala’s book “Pancake” was one that was mentioned.

The Record had an obituary on former Pacific Department of Communicative Disorders professor Roy Timmons. He was 79.

Dec. 14

The Rhode Island Providence Journal ran the Sacramento Bee story about the national pharmacist shortage. Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Dean Phil Oppenheimer was quoted.

The Sacramento Bee ran a guest editorial about the local economy. The editorial referenced the latest forecast from the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center and quoted Director Jeff Michael.

Dec. 15

The Tri-Valley Herald (Livermore) had a feature story on Dave Brubeck and how he is being inducted into the California Hall of Fame tonight. The article mentioned his association with Pacific.

The San Jose Mercury News’ regular traffic column included a question from Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences pharmacy student David Ha. Ha wanted to know when the I-205 widening project in Tracy would be completed, so his drive to the school will be smoother. Next year, he was told.

The Contra Costa Times had a feature story on Dave Brubeck’s induction into the California Hall of Fame. The story mentioned his connections to Pacific and also said that Brubeck plans to perform a concert dedicated to Ansel Adams during the 2009 Brubeck Festival at Pacific.

The Manteca Bulletin had a story about the shrinking housing market. The story referenced data from the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center.

Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted in a story in the Record about local road and public works projects and how those might help the local economy.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on how several engineering students won a national prize from the Society of Women Engineer’s for creating a device that allows people with cerebral palsy to communicate. Professor Louise Stark was quoted in the story.

Askmen.com had a feature story on “Girls Next Door” star and Hugh Heffner girlfriend Bridget Marquardt. The story mentioned that Marquardt has a masters degree from Pacific.

The Lodi News-Sentinel ran a brief that said the Stockton Trolley will be giving free rides to shoppers during the last week before Christmas. One of the stops for the trolley is Pacific, the brief says.

Dec. 16

TruTV, a reality television show that focuses on “true crime” stories, published a lengthy recap of the Cary Stayner murders, a person who murdered four women in or nearYosemite National Park in 1999. One of his victims, Juli Sund, had participated in a cheerleading competition hosted by University of the Pacific just a few days before Stayner killed her, the story says.

The Daily Sparks Tribune (Nevada) ran a feature story on local high school basketball star Erica McKenzie. The story said she will attend Pacific next year.

The Record ran a story about the upcoming financial aid deadlines for college. The story mentioned Pacific’s February filing deadline and also ran a photo from a recent financial aid workshop hosted by Pacific.

The Record had a brief that said Michael Kirby returned to the basketball team from his recent suspension.

Dec. 17

The Record had a brief that said Dave Brubeck was inducted into the California History Museum on Monday. The brief ran a photo of Brubeck talking with actor Jack Nicholson. The brief mentioned Brubeck’s connection with University of the Pacific.

The Record had an editorial praising Pacific’s engineering students for building a device that helps a local man with cerebral palsy verbally communicate.

The Tri-Valley Herald had a story that said Dixon City Councilman Michael Ceremello has appealed 17 citations for code violations issued by the city against his home, but because he is a city council member, the city attorney’s office has recused itself from prosecuting the case. The story mentioned that McGeorge School of Law has offered to hold the hearings on the case.

Front Page Magazine and Government Technology (a blog) both ran a story that said a study by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education concluded that many anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies enforced by universities violate the First Amendment right to free speech. University of the Pacific was listed as one of several hundred universities whose policies are too strict.

The Record had a story about a new report from the Eberhardt Business Forecasting Center. The report said while there is a current glut of homes due to the foreclosure crisis, there will be an increasing demand for new homes in about two years. Forecasting Center Director Jeff Michael was quoted.

Dec. 18

Dave Brubeck was interviewed on National Public Radio. During the interview, he explained why his archives are housed at University of the Pacific and why he founded the Brubeck Institute.

The Lodi News-Sentinel had a feature story on county supervisor Victor Mow, who is retiring this month. Mow is a graduate of Pacific, the story said.

Supercomputing Online, a blog that runs computer industry news, had a brief that said Ron Aghazarian was promoted to Vice President of Worldwide Sales Operations by Mellanox Technologies. Aghazarian is a graduate of Pacific, the brief said.
