Pacific engineering students place second in SEAOCC Design Competition
(December 2, 2008) -
University of the Pacific School of Engineering and Computer Science students took second place in the 2008 Structural Engineers Association of Central California (SEAOCC) Annual Design Competition held in Sacramento, November 11, 2008. The Pacific Tiger team gave a strong performance in the three
required phases of the competition: design, testing, and presenting the results. The Tiger team, led by faculty advisor, Dr. Hector Estrada, was comprised of engineering students Delicia Borja, William Grant, Kyla Mahowald, Christina Ramirez, and Sravanthi Sridhar.
The competition entailed the design and construction of an eight-foot horizontal structure to be tested by applying a load directly in the middle of the span. The design and construction phases were conducted at Wallace Kuhl & Associates in Sacramento on November 1; the testing was conducted the following day at Cal State, Chico. The final phase of the competition was a presentation of the entire activity at the SEAOCC Student Night Dinner in Sacramento on November 11, 2008.
The competition format was different than in years past in that all the competing schools had to go to a predetermined site and use a given set of materials and tools. SEAOCC has sponsored this competition for seven years and this year they sponsored over 25 students from 3 universities.
