Managing Waste
Since May of 2002, Pacific directed the refuse company it contracts with to divert its solid waste from going straight to the landfill. Rather, Pacific's waste now goes to the Lovelace Transfer Station where recyclable items are removed from the waste stream. At this point, approximately 50% of the campus's trash is pulled from the waste stream and recycled.
On the front end of the waste stream, Pacific has invested in 125 recycling bins placed throughout the campus, including cardboard-only dumpsters at the campus kitchens and Physical Plant facility. In addition, all of the green waste is recycled and much of the electronic and other hazardous waste is recycled throughout campus. A FY06/07 campus study identified that because of both upstream and downstream recycling strategies, Pacific is diverting an estimated 70% of its generated waste.
At the end of each year, the Housing and Greek Life Department and Physical Plant collect students' move out leftovers from the residence halls and donate them to a charity.
