Pacific CE Alum Receives 2008 National ASCE Citizen Engineer Award

(March 3, 2009) -

Brian Brown receives 2008 National ASCE Citizen Engineer AwardRecently, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) named Pacific Alum, Brian A. Brown, P.E., CFM, recipient of the 2008 ASCE Citizen Engineer Award.  Members of ASCE, who receive this award, are recognized for their commitment to public service.  Awardees are known in their own communities for volunteer work,  influencing local legislative affairs and whose activities have improved the image of the civil engineering profession.  (shown at left - Brian Brown )

Brian's commitment to public service is manifest in his capacity to engage local media in ASCE activities as well as the roles he takes up in the public sphere.  His public service has included:  mentoring in the Future city Competition; tutoring math students; and fundraising for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  It is also notable that since his involvement in ASCE's charity golf tournament donations have reached a record high.  Moreover, Brian, who is quite young, is President to ASCE's Capital Branch.  It is evident that his drive and volunteer activities stand to make a difference in the lives of people around him.  He is truly a shining example for the engineering profession.

Pacific's Camilla Saviz, Civil Engineering Professor, comments,  "I think it's really great that Brian was recognized!  He has been really active at the ASCE Branch and Section levels, and so active when he was a student here at Pacific.  We are very proud of our alumni's accomplishments, and truly enjoy being able to spread the word about all the great things they are doing for their own communities and beyond."

Upon reflection Brian recalls his time at Pacific and his co-op experience.  He chose Pacific because of the co-op experience.  "Participating in the co-op program was an invaluable experience.  The program allowed me to see how my eningeering education could be applied to real world projects, and provided the insight necessary to choose my career path in the broad field of civil engineering."  He remarked about Pacific faculty, to whom he feels very thankful for.  In particular, Brian identifies Dr. Fletcher as one who continually challenged him during his time at Pacific.

2009 ASCE President D. Wayne Klotz, P.E., Fellow ASCE,  presented the award to Brian at the Presidents Luncheon during the Multi-Region Leadership Conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers in January, 2009.

Brian earned a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering, cum laude, from Pacific in 2003.  He resides in Sacramento and works as a hydrologic engineer with David Ford Consulting Engineers.  He has recently worked within the following areas:  risk analysis, coincident-frequency analysis, and two-dimensional hydraulic modeling for dam breach hydrographs.  He has also assisted with teaching unsteady state hydraulic modeling software courses.
