As the new executive director, Rojo will guide strategies for future marketing and communication campaigns for the University, internal communications, development of the Website and general messages to the University community. He also will manage press relations, oversee the production of brochures, The Bulletin employee newsletter and the Pacific Review alumni magazine.
“Richard Rojo’s creative approach has been highly successful in marketing organizational identity and using diverse communications strategies,” said President Don DeRosa. “His years of experience will serve Pacific well as we seek to elevate the university’s national visibility and strengthen communications with alumni and friends.”
Rojo said the University’s strong reputation attracted him to the position. “Pacific has so many things going for it: a warm and dedicated faculty and staff; incredible campus beauty; smart and talented students; academic excellence,” Rojo said. “I am truly excited about joining that culture and helping to position the university for the future.”
Rojo has been at Sacramento State since in April 2006, where he oversaw advertising, website, e-mail, publications, and brochures. He was director of Marketing & Communications for the UC Davis Mondavi Center from 2001 to 2006, considered one of the country’s most active and progressive university-based performing arts centers. He oversaw Mondavi Center’s branding and opening campaigns; created new standards for brochure design, web- and e-mail marketing for the performing arts; started a student marketing program; and helped define a new model for university-based arts-presenting.
Rojo began his career in communications at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, where he helped develop a new promotional image aimed at reaching younger and minority audiences. From 1996 to 1998 he was an account executive managing a $6 million account at LaPlaca Cohen Advertising, a New York ad agency specializing in arts clients. He also worked at Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Redding, where he developed an institutional identity and marketing plan for an $80 million museum/wildlife park.
Rojo lives in Sacramento with his wife, journalist Christine Larson, and two-year old twin boys. He serves on the board of the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra and holds a degree in architectural history and theory from Princeton University.
